Hospital Emergency Room Visits For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, Henry John Mead
Hospital Emergency Room Visits For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, Henry John Mead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a well-recognized health issue among women of reproductive age. The characteristics and demographics of women in the community with HMB who present at the emergency department (ED) are not well described. This research aimed to describe the cohort of women who seek treatment at the ED. The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project 2016 National Emergency Department Sample was examined. The theory of reasoned action predicts that women who present at the ED are exhibiting health seeking behavior. From 32 million records, the inception cohort identified N = 111,555 cases. Using national estimation weights, this translates …
Hyperphosphatemia Contributes To Functional Iron Deficiency And Skeletal Muscle Wasting, Brian Anthony Czaya
Hyperphosphatemia Contributes To Functional Iron Deficiency And Skeletal Muscle Wasting, Brian Anthony Czaya
All ETDs from UAB
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health threat that increases risk of death, which is credible to both impaired renal function and a multitude of CKD- associated comorbidities such as systemic inflammation, anemia and skeletal muscle dys- function. A distinctive feature of CKD is the dysregulation of mineral metabolism, where excess serum levels of phosphate (hyperphosphatemia) and of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) are not only viewed as biomarkers for disease severity but also exert deleterious effects towards various CKD-associated pathologies. Elevated levels of FGF23 can lead to the activation of FGF receptor 4 (FGFR4) in cell types that …

Preoperative Anemia Management In Adult Outpatient Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgical Patients To Improve Treatment Of Preoperative Anemia, Katherine Mills
Preoperative Anemia Management In Adult Outpatient Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgical Patients To Improve Treatment Of Preoperative Anemia, Katherine Mills
Doctoral Projects
The transfusion of blood products can lead to life-threatening complications after surgery. In addition, blood products are a scarce and expensive resource. Even though anemia in coronary artery bypass surgery patients is currently undertreated, research has shown that the intravenous infusion of iron products, as well as a single dose of erythropoietin-alpha prior to surgery, decreases the amount of blood products used in the perioperative setting. The goal of this pilot project was to increase the number of patients screened for anemia, and if necessary, treated prior to coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Methods: This was a practice improvement, pilot …
Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Anemia adversely impacts the health of more than a billion people worldwide. A strong association between anemia and arsenic exposure has been reported in epidemiological studies from multiple countries. However, the mechanistic bases for the association between arsenic exposure and anemia is not fully understood. In this study, we found an inverse association between drinking water arsenic exposures and clinical indicators of anemia (i.e., red blood cell counts and hematocrit/packet cell volumes) in a cohort of men from rural Bangladesh enrolled in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study.
Follow-up studies in mice, revealed that 60-day exposure to trivalent inorganic …
Iron Deficiency Anemia, Heather Weaver
Iron Deficiency Anemia, Heather Weaver
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
“Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common type of nutritional disorder worldwide, occurring in both developing and developed countries and affecting as many as one-fifth of the world population” (Huether & McCance, 2018, p. 934). There are many causes including bleeding (usually intestinal or menstrual), pregnancy, malnutrition, and malabsorption. Some of the signs and symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, headaches, exertional shortness of breath, cold intolerance, and paler than normal skin tones. The American Society of Hematology (2019) reports iron is important in the production of hemoglobin and maintenance of healthy cells. The topic of IDA was chosen as a …

Evaluation Of Anemia In Communities Served By Shoulder To Shoulder Global: A Cross-Sectional Study In Santo Domingo, Ecuador, Kevin Mercer
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
BACKGROUND: Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) recognizes anemia as a cause of morbidity among patients in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. Little research has been done to assess targetable anemia risk factors to serve as a foundation for future pharmacotherapeutic interventions. This study sought to identify risk factors for anemia in this population.
METHODS: Data obtained from existing patient records from January 1, 2010 to August 31, 2016 included hemoglobin/hematocrit, age, sex, pregnancy status, and presenting community. Chi-square tests compared means to examine risk factors associated with anemia. Poisson regression and incidence rate ratios (IRR) were used to estimate risk factors associated …

Determinants Of Low Birth Weight In A Population-Based Sample Of Zimbabwe, Paul Nesara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health concern globally. Despite its negative social and economic impact on the family and community at large, it has remained relatively unexplored at population level in Zimbabwe. The purpose of the study was to establish determinants of LBW using data from the 2015 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey. The socioecological model was the conceptual framework for the study. A secondary analysis was conducted on 4,227 mother-infant dyads. Independent variables were duration of pregnancy, number of births within the past 5-year period, exposure to mass media, type of fuel used for cooking in …
Predictors Of Anemia Among Hiv Patients In Uganda, Catherine Nagawa
Predictors Of Anemia Among Hiv Patients In Uganda, Catherine Nagawa
Masters Theses
HIV-related anemia is associated with increased risk of death. Prior studies suggest an inverse relationship between CD4 cell count and anemia, and a positive relationship between HIV-clinical stage and anemia. However, none have assessed the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment combinations in these relationships. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate the relationship between CD4 cell count, HIV clinical stage and anemia among 4803 Ugandan HIV-patients, and assessed the role of ART treatment combinations. We included HIV patients (> 15 years) receiving ART therapy combinations between 2010- 2015. We evaluated CD4 cell count and anemia using blood tests, …
Comparison Of Iron Supplementation And Albendazole On Anemia In Ghanaian Children, Megan M. Zitting
Comparison Of Iron Supplementation And Albendazole On Anemia In Ghanaian Children, Megan M. Zitting
Theses and Dissertations
Half a billion school aged children suffer from anemia, with the majority of anemia caused by iron deficiency. Researchers have shown a strong correlation between low hemoglobin levels and presence of intestinal parasites in children with anemia. Childhood anemia has profound negative effects on physical growth, maturation, and cognitive development leading to poorer educational achievement. Using hemoglobin as a measure of anemia, this quasi-experimental study investigated impact of either iron supplementation or an antiparasitic medication on hemoglobin levels in two groups of children in a rural region of Eastern Ghana. Surprisingly, after a 6-month intervention period, hemoglobin levels in both …

Hereditary Spherocytosis, Dolores Loeser
Hereditary Spherocytosis, Dolores Loeser
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Hereditary Spherocytosis (HS) is a hemolytic anemia where red blood cell membranes are spherical unlike common red blood cells, which are flat and round. In individuals with HS the spleen does not recognize these amorphous cells and destroys—rather filters—them them, making the individual anemic (MedlinePlus, 2013). HS is an autosomal dominant, or recessive autosomal inherited blood disease (Huq, Pietroni, Rahman & Alam, 2010) HS happens in 1 in 2,000 of the Caucasian population in or from Northern Europe (MedlinePlus, 2013). The proteins involved in HS are ankyrin-1, ά-spectrin, β-spectrin, band 3, and protein 4.2. Hyperbilirubinemia is a common symptoms in …

Identification Of Novel Allosteric Regulators Of Human Erythrocyte Pyruvate Kinase, Shilpa S. Kharalkar
Identification Of Novel Allosteric Regulators Of Human Erythrocyte Pyruvate Kinase, Shilpa S. Kharalkar
Theses and Dissertations
Erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (R-PK) is a key glycolytic enzyme catalyzing the transphosphorylation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and ADP to pyruvate and ATP respectively3,4. The substrate PEP and product pyruvate of this reaction are involved in a number of energetic and biosynthetic pathways; hence a tight regulation of R-PK activity is crucial not only for glycolysis, but also for the entire cellular metabolism. Deficiency of R-PK is one of the most common enzymatic defects of RBC, and may be caused by mutations of the PK-LR (pyruvate kinase liver red blood cell) gene31, 32. Clinically, R-PK deficiency manifests itself as a chronic life-long …

Effectiveness Of Erythropoietin Therary In The Treatment Of The Anemia In Clients With End-Stage Renal Disease In Mississippi, Elizabeth Duncan
MSN Research Projects
Clients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) often experience an associated anemia which has been attributed to an endocrine deficiency of erythropoietin. The purpose of this descriptive, retrospective study was to describe the characteristics of the effectiveness of erythropoietin (EPO) therapy on the anemia associated with ESRD. The research question generated was how effective is EPO therapy in the treatment of the anemia in clients with ESRD in Mississippi? Orem's Self-Care Model was the theoretical framework used for this study. The sample (N = 100) consisted of 55 males clients and 45 female clients from an ambulatory dialysis unit in Northeast …
