The Role Of Superb Microvascular Imaging In Detecting Low-Grade Inflammation Among Adults And Those With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Preliminary Study, Alaaddi̇n Nayman, Nusret Seher, Mehmet Öztürk, Hali̇l Özer, Gülperi̇ Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pathophysiologic changes associated with chronic inflammation occur with aging and more prominently in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and an association between chronic inflammation and muscle wasting has been identified. The microcirculation is extremely sensitive to the inflammatory process and actively participates in it. In a healthy adult, angiogenesis is a strictly controlled and rare occurrence. However, aberrant angiogenesis and the development of new tiny blood vessels are known in chronic inflammatory diseases. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) is a noninvasive technique that can evaluate tiny vessels with low blood flow and provide quantitative data. Our goal was to …

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Abstract:

Background: The treatment choice in adults with skeletal class III malocclusion represents a challenging task for orthodontists, especially in borderline cases. With the growth spurt being surpassed, the clinician is left between two treatment options: orthodontic camouflage or orthognathic surgery. Around the years, many studies tried to uncover a guide model which enables practitioners to distinguish between skeletal class III that can be appropriately treated by orthodontics alone and those needing surgical intervention.

Aim: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the importance of cutaneous profile perception as a subjective decisive parameter in the treatment of borderline skeletal …

Association Between Therapeutic Interventions And Quality Of Life In People With Autism, Taline Movsessian, Tolulope A. Osoba Nov 2022

Association Between Therapeutic Interventions And Quality Of Life In People With Autism, Taline Movsessian, Tolulope A. Osoba

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Research exploring the association of autism interventions with the quality of life (QoL) of adults with autism spectrum disorders was scarce. Although a multitude of interventions are used to target a specific challenge facing the individual with autism, their correlation with achieving a better QoL is largely unknown. We conducted a cross-sectional, correlational survey study to determine the association between seven interventions—behavioral, social, mental health, daily living skills (DLS), vocational, mindfulness, and medications—and the QoL of adults 18 years and older with autism with no intellectual disability (ID) living in Canada. A national sample of 182 autistic adults or proxy …

Isolated Optic Neuropathy As The Presenting Sign Of Neurosyphilis, Kasey Zann Od, Molly Johnson Od, James Fabian Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Detection and treatment of syphilitic ocular disease without a known history of syphilis is often difficult due to its varied presentations. Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to reducing risk of permanent vision loss, particularly with optic nerve and retinal manifestations.

Case Report: This case report describes a 44 year-old male who was diagnosed with neurosyphilis through his work-up for unilateral optic neuropathy.

Conclusion: This report illustrates the importance of including syphilis lab testing in the setting of optic nerve edema. Syphilis should be considered in any inflammatory ocular disease, especially in patients with atypical presentations and high-risk …

Introduction: A common pathology in the Neurosurgery Service is chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), affecting elderly male patients. It is an accumulation of blood that is located in the subdural space that can occur spontaneously or be the result of a head injury or other pathologies such as high blood pressure (HBP), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), alcoholism, or external factors such as head trauma (CT) and consumption of platelet antiaggregants. Objective: To determine how predisposing factors are associated with CSDH in adults and older adults treated at the Neurosurgery and Geriatrics Service at the María Auxiliadora Hospital (HMA) in 2016-2020. …

Relationship Between Aerobic Fitness, Blood Pressure And Life Satisfaction, Attila Szabo, Tamás Bőhm, Ferenc Köteles

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: The aim of this work was to examine the extent to which cardiorespiratory fitness, blood pressure, and optimism/pessimism predict adults’ satisfaction with life. Material and methods: Sixty-eight adults seeking cardiovascular health screening in a private clinic were tested. Participants’ blood pressure, optimism/pessimism, and satisfaction with life were recorded. The YMCA cycle ergometer test was used for estimating participants’ aerobic fitness (VO2 max). Based on 140/90 mm Hg blood pressure cut-off value, participants were classified into two groups. Results: A bootstrapped hierarchical multivariate regression analysis revealed that VO2 max, systolic blood pressure, optimism, and pessimism jointly accounted for 46% of …

Comparison Of Red Cell Distribution Width Values Towardsmortality In Adult And Elderly Hospital-Acquired Pneumoniapatients In Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Desty Gusti Sari, Rizka Humardewayanti Asdie, Heni Retnowulan

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Introduction. Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with mortality in patients with septic shock and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, little is known about the effect of elevation of RDW value on mortality in HAP patients, especially in the elderly population who have a worse prognosis. This study aimed to determine the proportion of adult and elderly HAP patients who have an increase in RDW value and the relation between the increase in RDW value to the risk of mortality in HAP patients during hospitalization. Methods. A cross-sectional and …

Hydrogen Peroxide Colitis: The Accidental Enema, Ramin Karimi, Ashish Sharma, Kevin Tran, Sebastian Montgomery

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Chemical colitis is defined as inflammation of the large intestine or colon as a result of exposure from a harsh chemical through an enema or other procedure. In this case, the chemical is hydrogen peroxide, which is commonly used as an antiseptic for minor abrasions. Hydrogen peroxide enemas were once popular for difficult to treat constipation. However, resultant colitis and proctitis limited its use. When administered rectally in a high enough concentration, intense abdominal pain and transient bloody diarrhea can occur, with the majority of affected patients making a full recovery with supportive management. Here we discuss a case of …

Neuroblastoma In Adulthood, Turgut Yapanoğlu, İsa Özbey, Yilmaz Aksoy, Nesri̇n Gürsan, Özkan Polat

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Neuroblastoma is a common malignancy in children, but rarely occurs in adults. Neuroblastoma occurring in adolescents, compared to those occurring in children, are more frequently diagnosed in advanced stages and have common sites of metastases. Currently there are no standard treatment guidelines for patients with neuroblastoma in adulthood. If treated with standard protocols as those used for children, their survival is poor, particularly patients with localized disease seem to have a more aggressive course compared to children.
