Parental, Peer, And Tobacco Marketing Influences On Adolescent Smoking In South Africa, Reynolds A. Morrison Aug 2011

Parental, Peer, And Tobacco Marketing Influences On Adolescent Smoking In South Africa, Reynolds A. Morrison

Public Health Theses

Tobacco use is a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most smokers initiate smoking in childhood, become addicted, and continue the habit into adulthood. Various factors have been shown to impact smoking behavior. It is important to determine how these factors impact smoking behavior in developing regions of the world, such as in South Africa. This study examines the association between parental smoking status; peer smoking status; exposure to pro-tobacco marketing; and current smoking status among adolescents in South Africa. It also determines which factor is the most significant predictor of current smoking status among the study population …

An Analysis Of Household-Reported Health Status And Socio-Demographic Characteristics Associated With Adolescent Influenza Vaccination Rates In The United States: 2008 National Immunization Survey-Teen, Lindy Liu

Public Health Theses

Background: Influenza is a highly contagious but preventable acute respiratory illness associated with high morbidity. Seasonal influenza affects approximately 20% to 40% of children and adolescents. Annual influenza vaccination is an effective approach to prevent illness but recent studies suggests that adolescents are underutilizing important preventive health services and that influenza vaccination coverage in high risk adolescents is also suboptimal. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between household reported health status and socio-demographic characteristics of U.S. adolescents who reported receiving an influenza vaccination.

Methods: Data from the 2008 National Immunization Survey were assessed examining various demographic …

Public Health Faculty Publications

Purpose: The current study examines the associations between a range of risk factors and reports of suicide attempts and attempts requiring medical care in a nationally representative study of high school students. The goal is to examine sex differences in the risk factors associated with suicide attempts and attempt-related injuries requiring treatment by a health-care provider.

Methods: We used data from the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey for students in grades 9-12 to assess the prevalence and risk factors for suicidal behavior, as well as differences in these for boys and girls. Cross-sectional multivariate logistic regression analyses were computed to …

Examining The Association Between Parental Smoking And Adolescent Age Of Smoking Initiation In Africa, Jessica Lauren Howell Dec 2008

Examining The Association Between Parental Smoking And Adolescent Age Of Smoking Initiation In Africa, Jessica Lauren Howell

Public Health Theses

Tobacco use is responsible for millions of preventable illnesses and deaths throughout the world. Nevertheless, multitudes of people begin smoking every day, most before reaching the age of 18. Previous research suggests that parental smoking status is a significant predictor of adolescent smoking. Furthermore, parental smoking status may also be associated with a younger age of smoking initiation, which increases a person’s risk of nicotine dependence, cancer, and death. This study examines the association between parental smoking and adolescent age of smoking initiation in 14 African countries. Data for this study was obtained from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey from …

Adolescent Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs Toward Vaccination, Richard Brendan Noggle Dec 2007

Adolescent Knowledge, Attitudes, And Beliefs Toward Vaccination, Richard Brendan Noggle

Public Health Theses

Vaccination, one of public health’s greatest disease prevention tools, is broadening to focus on adolescents. Now that there are more vaccines targeted specifically for adolescents, it is time to give more focus to vaccine delivery in this population. This research will increase the knowledge base to support informed changes in adolescent vaccine delivery by identifying knowledge and attitudes of adolescents toward vaccination within the context of barriers and solutions. Perceived susceptibility to disease, benefits and barriers to vaccination and other constructs were collected through a survey to 1368 high school students. In this population, a scheduled adolescent healthcare visit is …
