Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Clinical exacerbations characterized with neurological symptoms are observed in around 10% of Behçet's disease (BD) patients and may culminate in severe disability. Although certain immunological factors have been associated with disease activity in neuro-Behçet's disease (NBD), biomarkers for monitoring the clinical outcome of NBD have not been properly investigated. Materials and methods: Levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL), homeobox protein Hox-B3 (HoxB3), and YKL-40 were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of 23 parenchymal (n = 16) and nonparenchymal (n = 7) NBD patients obtained during NBD attacks by ELISA. Parameters of clinical progression and outcome were assessed for …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and coronary stenting had a poor prognosis. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of CHA2 DS2 -VASc score for predicting and grading adverse clinical outcomes in this population. Materials and methods: We reviewed the clinical data of all patients with previously documented nonvalvular AF who underwent coronary stenting between January 2010 and June 2015 in 12 hospitals of Beijing, China. The study population was divided into three groups: 1) Low CHA2 DS2 -VASc score, ≦ 2 points, 2) Intermediate score, 3-4 points, and 3) High score, ≧ 5 points. Major adverse cardiac/cerebrovascular events …

Background/aim: Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible splenial lesion (MERS) is a rare clinicoradiological syndrome that typically presents with central nervous system symptoms such as loss of consciousness, seizure, headache, and ophthalmoparesis. Materials and methods: Here, we highlight the characteristics of this syndrome together with the clinical and MRI findings of 6 pediatric patients with MERS. Results: Between January 2017 and October 2020, 6 patients with MERS (3 boys and 3 girls) presented to our center. The mean age was 122 ± 54.6 (min-max: 44-180) months. None of the patients had a chronic disease. In our study, infectious agents were detected …

Effect Of Perioperative Factors On The Prognosis Of Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Who Underwent Hepatectomy, Lining Xu, Yingying Xu, Guiping Li, Bo Yang Jan 2022

Effect Of Perioperative Factors On The Prognosis Of Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Who Underwent Hepatectomy, Lining Xu, Yingying Xu, Guiping Li, Bo Yang

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hepatic resection is a potentially curative treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Controversy persists regarding preoperative and intraoperative characteristics related to patient survival in various medical institutes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative and intraoperative factors on the long-term survival of patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy. Materials and methods: Data on 455 patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy over a 20-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed for preoperative- and intraoperative-related prognostic factors. Results: The 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year overall survival rates of patients with HCC who …

Pd-L1 And Ebv Lmp1 Expressions In Classic Hodgkin Lymphomas And Its Correlation With Clinicopathological Parameters And Prognosis, Süleyman Özdemi̇r, Özlem Ton, Fevzi̇ye Kabukcuoğlu Jan 2022

Pd-L1 And Ebv Lmp1 Expressions In Classic Hodgkin Lymphomas And Its Correlation With Clinicopathological Parameters And Prognosis, Süleyman Özdemi̇r, Özlem Ton, Fevzi̇ye Kabukcuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Programmed death pathway leads to T cell anergy. Wide range of malignancies take advantage of this pathway by programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression either on neoplastic cells or on the nonneoplastic cells of tumour microenvironment. New therapeutic approaches have been directed against this pathway. We studied PD-L1 expression on both neoplastic Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells and cells of tumour microenvironment in classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) patients and compared it with Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) positivity, clinical data, and survival rates. Materials and methods: Lymph node excision materials of 56 CHL patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2017 were included in …

Background/aim: To evaluate the role of cyclic protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (circPRMT5) in the occurrence and development of breast cancer (BC). Materials and methods: A total of 90 BC patients who underwent radical mastectomy and 40 age-matched healthy female controls were recruited in the Second People's Hospital of China Three Gorges University, Yichang Second People's Hospital from 2017 to 2020. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the expression levels of circPRMT5 in BC tissues, serum, normal breast cell line (MCF-10A), and BC cell line (T47D, MCF-7, BT549, Hs-578T, and MDA-MB-231, MDAMB-468). The associations between circPRMT5 …

Background/aim: To determine the survival outcomes and prognostic factors associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) survival in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective cohort study involving two hepatobiliary centres from January 1, 2012, to June 30, 2018. Medical records were analysed for sociodemographic, clinical characteristics, laboratory testing, and HCC treatment information. Survival outcomes were examined using the Kaplan?Meier and log-rank test. Prognostic factors were determined using multivariate Cox regression. Results: A total of 212 patients were included in the study. The median survival time was 22 months. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were …
