Enterococcus Faecium Septicemia In A Dog: Clinical Features And Molecular Screening Of Virulence Genes Of Enterococcus, Trasida Ployngam, Numfa Fungbun

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A one-year-old Golden Retriever male dog manifested multi-systemic inflammation with a marked increment of plasma D-dimer. Enterococcus spp. was identified from hemoculture and it showed multidrug resistance (MDR), including amikacin, cephazolin, ceftriaxone, clindamycin, imipenem, penicillin G and sulfa-trimethoprim. Pure Enterococcus colonies were identified for species-specific DNA by PCR amplification and sequencing. It was 100% identical with the Enterococcus faecium strains in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. Molecular screening of virulence genes of the isolated E. faecium strain exhibited four of nine genes including gelatinase (gelE), cell wall adhesion (efaAfm), second collagen adhesin (scm) and adhesin of collagen …

Computed Tomographic Findings Of Primary Renal Tumors In Dogs And Cats, Daji Noh, Jaejin Shim, Sooyoung Choi, Hojung Choi, Youngwon Lee, Kija Lee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Primary renal tumor is uncommon in dogs and cats, with few previous computed tomography (CT) reports. Previous studies have reported that contrast-enhancing CT is helpful in differentiating the type of renal tumors. This study aimed to describe CT findings of renal tumors in dogs and cats and identify contrast-enhancing pattern according to 3 post-contrast phases. In this retrospective study, the following CT findings were recorded for each patient: (1) renal tumor involvement, (2) enhancement pattern, (3) vascular invasion, (4) presence of lymphadenopathy and organ metastasis, (5) presence of mineralization, and (6) attenuation values of renal tumors on pre- and post-contrast …

Suspected Malignant Mesothelial Cells In Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid Of A Dog With Respiratory Distress, Junseok Kim, Jimin Oh, Taesik Yun, Yoonhoi Koo, Dohee Lee, Yeon Chae, Byeong-Teck Kang, Mhan-Pyo Yang, Hakhyun Kim

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An 11-year-old neutered female Labrador Retriever presented with a 1-week history of respiratory distress, lethargy and anorexia. On physical examination, the dog exhibited dyspnea with a rapid and shallow breathing pattern. Thoracic radiography showed diffuse nodular or miliary interstitial patterns, which raised suspicion of bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections and metastatic tumors. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed and the culture yielded no growth of infectious agents, including bacteria and fungi. A presumptive diagnosis of pulmonary mesothelioma was made based on malignant mesothelial cells on BAL fluid cytology. Therefore, this is a report identifying suspected pulmonary mesothelioma using BAL fluid in …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Urinary tract infection is the most common complication found in dogs with urolithiasis. Bacterial cystitis can play an important role in dogs with urolithiasis; it can either be the cause of cystic formation or be a complication following urolithiasis. Moreover, urolithiasis cases that come with bacterial cystitis can lead to a condition of complicated cystitis which will require more complicated treatment and management. Proper bacterial identification should be performed in order to follow an appropriate treatment. Specific treatments require bacterial identification in order to select the most appropriate antibiotics. There are three main possible sites for bacterial sample collection in …

Assessment Of Abdominal Fat Distribution By Computed Tomography In Obese Dogs, Yunseo Jang, Hyemin Na, Sooyoung Choi, Hojung Choi, Youngwon Lee, Kija Lee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Obesity is a risk factor for canine health but there has been no study on the tendency of body fat accumulation naturally occurring in obese dogs. This retrospective observational study aims to evaluate the tendency to accumulate visceral and subcutaneous fat using computed tomography (CT) in naturally occurring obese dogs. The study included 15 dogs with a body condition score of 8 or 9 that underwent abdominal CT scans. Total fat area (TA), visceral fat area (VA), subcutaneous fat area (SA) and body area (BA) were measured by non-contrast transverse image at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) and the sixth …

Indications For Canine Fecal Microbiota Transplantation, Kerong Li, Xiaoxiao Zhou, Zhijun Zhong, Haifeng Liu, Min Li, Guangneng Peng, Ziyao Zhou

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a novel method to treat intestinal and extraintestinal diseases by transplanting the microbiota in the feces of healthy animals into the gastrointestinal tracts of patients and reconstructing intestinal flora in the patients' intestine. In this article, we reviewed the recent studies of canine FMT focusing on its indications. FMT was proved effective to treat canine Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), canine parvovirus (CPV) diarrhea and acute diarrhea; upregulate the intestinal microbiota in dogs with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS); and may have benefit for preventing canine post-weaning diarrhea. However, the specific FMT …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A dorsal sling technique for correction of nuchal ligament excision in a dermoid sinus canine case is presented in this report. At surgery, there were multiple tubes of the dermoid sinus tracts of different types. The nuchal sinus was treated using a segmental resection at the area of involvement and a dorsal sling technique was performed. The dog recovered uneventfully and regained normal daily activities within a short time after surgery. The technique was accomplished as evaluated by non-pain normal motion of the cervical region and no complications were found during the follow-up period. This is the first report on …
