A Comparison Of High-Intensity Interval And Moderate Intensity Continuous Training On Glucose Regulation In Sedentary, Obese Individuals, Sophia R. Mirth, Brandon J. Sawyer, Dharini M. Bhammer, Glenn A. Gaesser

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

It is well known that exercise is beneficial in the prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2D) but the ideal type of training is not clear. PURPOSE: To compare the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on blood glucose regulation in sedentary, obese adults. METHODS: 22 sedentary, obese individuals were randomized into either HIIT or MICT. Each group exercised on a cycle ergometer 3 times/wk for 8 wks. The HIIT group performed 10, 1 min intervals at 90-95% HRmax with 1 min rest intervals in between. The MICT group performed 30 min of …

Pharmacy Students As Volunteer Medical Staff For American Diabetes Association Summer Camp, Emily Harvath

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

For children living with a diagnosis of diabetes, com-munity support and education about proper disease management are critical for the mental and physical health of the child and their family. The experiences offered at summer camps hosted by the American Diabetes Association address both of these needs for the pediatric diabetes community. These camps provide children with the opportunity to participate in a traditional camp experience—swimming, rock climbing, tubing, and more—while giving parents peace of mind in the knowledge that their child’s diabetes will be closely monitored by a team of health care professionals. During my time as volunteer medical …

A Lesson Involving Nursing Management Of Diabetes Care: Incorporating Simulation In Didactic Instruction To Prepare Students For Entry-Level Practice, Elizabeth Moxley, Larry Maturin Jr., Desale Habtzghi

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Diabetes is a global health problem requiring nursing students demonstrate a thorough understanding for NCLEX® and entry-level practice, although clinical opportunities are increasingly limited, especially for Associate Degree Programs.

Method: A Simulation-based Education was incorporated in a didactic lesson to improve diabetes nursing care. Knowledge, confidence, application and relevance were measured using Wilcoxon signed-rank, Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis analyses.

Results: Student (n=46, 85% female) perceived knowledge of glycemic management (post > pre, p < 0.0001), confidence administering insulin (post > pre, p < 0.0001), and clinical relevance improved. Confidence increased among three cohorts per Kruskal Wallis H test (2 = 7.76, p = 0.021). Increased confidence correlated with relevance (2 = 30.965, p = 0.009) and prior understanding of therapy ( …

Patient Education: Low-Carb Substitutes For Pre-Diabetes Management, Keira L. Goodell

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

At Milton Family Practice in Milton, VT, individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes are referred to a clinical nutritionist and sent home with patient instructions about blood sugar and carbohydrates. For those who decline a meeting with the clinical nutritionist, the patient instructions are not an adequate substitute. This project focused on the creation of a SmartPhrase to be added to patient instructions outlining common high-carbohydrate foods and options for lower-carb alternatives.
