Abstract: Background: Data sparsity is a major limitation to estimating national and global dementia burden. Surveys with full diagnostic evaluations of dementia prevalence are prohibitively resource-intensive in many settings. However, validation samples from nationally representative surveys allow for the development of algorithms for the prediction of dementia prevalence nationally. Methods: Using cognitive testing data and data on functional limitations from Wave A (2001–2003) of the ADAMS study (n=744) and the 2000 wave of the HRS study (n=6358) we estimated a two-dimensional item response theory model to calculate cognition and function scores for all individuals over 70. Based on diagnostic information …

Background: In sub-Saharan Africa, there is paucity of research on substance use patterns among young people living with HIV (YLWH). To address the gap, we sought to: i) determine the prevalence of substance use, specifically alcohol and illicit drug use, among YLWH compared to their HIV-uninfected peers; ii) investigate the independent association between young people’s HIV infection status and substance use; iii) investigate the risk indicators for substance use among these young people.

Methods: Between November 2018 and September 2019, a cross-sectional study was conducted at the Kenyan coast recruiting 819 young people aged 18–24 years (407 HIV-positive). …

Predictors Of Fear Of Childbirth And Depressive Symptoms Among Pregnant Women: A Cross-Sectional Survey In Pwani Region, Tanzania, Agnes Fredrick Massae, Margareta Larsson, Sebalda Leshabari, Columba Mbekenga, Andrea Barnabas Pembe, Agneta Skoog Svanberg

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Many women experience fear of childbirth (FoB) and depressive symptoms (DS) during pregnancy, but little is known about FoB among Tanzanian women. The current study aimed to assess the prevalence of FoB and DS among pregnant women and determine predictors of each and both, focusing on sociodemographic and obstetric predictors.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at six health facilities in two districts in Tanzania between 2018 and 2019. In total, 694 pregnant women with gestational age between 32 and 40weeks and expecting vaginal delivery were consecutively recruited and assessed for FoB and DS. We collected data …

The Prevalence Of Albuminuria In Children With Chronic Kidney Disease In Two Tertiary Hospitals In Nairobi, Kenya, Mercy Wambui Githumbi Aug 2021

The Prevalence Of Albuminuria In Children With Chronic Kidney Disease In Two Tertiary Hospitals In Nairobi, Kenya, Mercy Wambui Githumbi

Theses & Dissertations

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health problem globally. In Africa, the burden in children remains unclear and is often reported as low. In developing countries, it is mainly due to secondary causes and nephrotic syndrome, while in the developed countries it is mainly due to congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) defines CKD and utilises glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and albuminuria as an additional factor. Albuminuria is significant in prognostication of individuals with CKD as it is a marker of kidney damage. It is correlated with outcomes including …

Mental Disorders Among Health Care Workers At The Early Phase Of Covid-19 Pandemic In Kenya; Findings Of An Online Descriptive Survey, Edith Kamaru Kwobah, Ann Mwangi, Kirtika Patel, Thomas Mwogi, Robert Kiptoo, Lukoye Atwoli Jul 2021

Mental Disorders Among Health Care Workers At The Early Phase Of Covid-19 Pandemic In Kenya; Findings Of An Online Descriptive Survey, Edith Kamaru Kwobah, Ann Mwangi, Kirtika Patel, Thomas Mwogi, Robert Kiptoo, Lukoye Atwoli

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Background: Healthcare workers responding to the Corona Virus Pandemic (COVID-19) are at risk of mental illness. Data is scanty on the burden of mental disorders among Kenyan healthcare workers responding to the pandemic that can inform mental health and psychosocial support. The purpose of this study was to establish the frequency and associated factors of worry, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder and poor quality of sleep among Kenyan health care workers at the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: We conducted an online survey among 1,259 health care workers in Kenya. A researcher developed social demographic questionnaire and several …

Prevalence And Risk Factors Associated With Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (Mdro) Carriage Among Pediatric Patients At The Time Of Admission In A Tertiary Care Hospital Of A Developing Country. Prevalence And Risk Factors Associated With Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (Mdro) Carriage Among Pediatric Patients At The Time Of Admission In A Tertiary Care Hospital Of A Developing Country. A Cross-Sectional Study, Sonia Qureshi, Noshi Maria, Mohammad Zeeshan, Seema Irfan, Farah Naz Qamar

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: The rise of Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) poses a considerable burden on the healthcare systems, particularly in low-middle income countries like Pakistan. There is a scarcity of data on the carriage of MDRO particularly in the pediatrics population therefore, we aimed to determine MDRO carriage in pediatric patients at the time of admission to a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, and to identify the risk factors associated with it.
Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted at the pediatric department of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) from May to September 2019 on 347 children aged 1-18 years. For identification of MDRO …

Prevalence And Mortality Of Epilepsies With Convulsive And Non-Convulsive Seizures In Kilifi, Kenya, Symon M. Kariuki, Anthony Ngugi, Martha Z. Kombe, Michael Kazungu, Eddie Chengo, Rachael Odhiambo, Amek Nyaguara, Brian G. Neville, Charles Rjc Newton May 2021

Prevalence And Mortality Of Epilepsies With Convulsive And Non-Convulsive Seizures In Kilifi, Kenya, Symon M. Kariuki, Anthony Ngugi, Martha Z. Kombe, Michael Kazungu, Eddie Chengo, Rachael Odhiambo, Amek Nyaguara, Brian G. Neville, Charles Rjc Newton

Population Health, East Africa

Objectives: The prevalence of all epilepsies (both convulsive and non-convulsive seizures) in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMIC), particularly sub-Saharan Africa is unknown. Under estimation of non-convulsive ep- ilepsies in data from these countries may lead to inadequate and sub-optimal allocation of resources to control and prevent epilepsy. We determined the prevalence of all types of epilepsies and compared the mortality be- tween convulsive seizures and non-convulsive seizures in a resource limited rural area in Kenya.

Methods: Trained clinicians identified cases of epilepsy in a randomly selected sample of 4,441 residents in the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System site …

Background: In sub-Saharan Africa, common mental disorders (CMDs) like depression and anxiety are under investigated amongst young people living with HIV (YLWH). To address the gap, in Kenya we: a) determined the prevalence of CMDs among YLWH compared to their uninfected peers; b) investigated HIV status as an independent predictor of CMDs in young people; c) investigated CMDs risk and protective indicators with more focus on YLWH.

Methods: Between November 2018 and September 2019, 819 young people aged 18–24 years (407 HIV-infected) were recruited from two Counties on the Kenyan coast. Locally adapted pre-existing mental health measures, Patient Health Questionnaire …
