Talking Trash In The Big Apple: Mitigating Bird Strikes Near The North Shore Marine Transfer Station, Stephan J. Beffre, Brian E. Washburn
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Anthropogenic activities that concentrate wildlife near airports increases the risk of wildlife–aircraft collisions. Placing waste management facilities, natural areas, golf courses, and other landscape features near airports have the potential to attract wildlife hazardous to aviation. We conducted a 3-year study (March 2013–February 2016) to determine if the implementation of a Wildlife Hazard Mitigation Program (WHMP) would influence the bird use of a waste transfer station located near LaGuardia Airport, New York City, New York, USA. We conducted wildlife surveys during 3 phases: (1) no mitigation program and no waste transfer station, (2) active mitigation and no waste transfer station, …
The Impact Of Food Insecurity On Diabetes Prevalence In The Us: A Look At The Northeast And The Midwest, Richard Mensah
The Impact Of Food Insecurity On Diabetes Prevalence In The Us: A Look At The Northeast And The Midwest, Richard Mensah
Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions globally. Various risk factors have been found to be associated with the incidence of diabetes. These include genetic predispositions, physical activity and diet. However, less attention has been given to the potential risk of food insecurity to diabetes prevalence. Therefore, the goal of this study was to look at the prevalence of food insecurity and diabetes in New York and Ohio, and try to see if a correlation exists between food insecurity and diabetes prevalence in these states.
In our methods, we used the 2019 data from County Health Rankings (CHR) …

BACKGROUND: Northwell Health, an integrated health system in New York, has treated more than 15,000 inpatients with COVID-19 at the US epicenter of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
OBJECTIVE: We describe the demographic characteristics of patients who died of COVID-19, observation of frequent rapid response team/cardiac arrest (RRT/CA) calls for non-intensive care unit (ICU) patients, and factors that contributed to RRT/CA calls.
METHODS: A team of registered nurses reviewed the medical records of inpatients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 via polymerase chain reaction before or on admission and who died between March 13 (first Northwell Health inpatient expiration) and April 30, 2020, …
Medication-Assisted Treatment In The Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Jordan Munger
Medication-Assisted Treatment In The Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Jordan Munger
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Background: Opioid use results in over 45,000 overdose deaths annually in the US, with rural areas disproportionately affected. While medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) is an effective intervention available through outpatient primary care, less than 25% of patients with OUD are currently in treatment. This study explored factors associated with patient retention in an MAT program offered by Hudson Headwaters, a Federally Qualified Health Center that serves a vast and mostly rural region of Northeastern New York.
Methods: We included a total of 354 patients diagnosed with OUD who had at least two appointments for MAT between …
Reducing No Show Rate In The Primary Care Setting, Heng Tan
Reducing No Show Rate In The Primary Care Setting, Heng Tan
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Healthcare systems consumed 17.7 % of the U.S. GDP. Efficiently using clinical resources is critical. No-show appointments decrease the provider’s productivity, increases healthcare costs, and limits the health clinic’s effective capacity. Address patients with history of no show with targeted questionnaire and provide corresponding support can not only decrease the rate and improve the efficiency of health care but also decrease unnecessary emergency and urgent care visits

Increasing Awareness Of Added Sugar In The Outpatient Setting, Lauren Bougioukas
Increasing Awareness Of Added Sugar In The Outpatient Setting, Lauren Bougioukas
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
An estimated 80% of Americans consume more than the recommended daily amount of added sugar. Added sugar consumption significantly increases risk for cardiovascular disease mortality, and is associated with body weight, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. In the United States, added sugar consumption contributes to public health costs related to cardiovascular disease ($555 billion spent in 2016) and diabetes ($245 billion spent in 2012). Particularly in New York, nearly 40% of all New York deaths in 2014 could be attributed to cardiovascular disease and 10.5% of New York adults had diabetes in 2017. In addition to added sugar overconsumption, …
