Objectives

The aim of this study was to examine how the concentrated delivery of less effective antibiotics, such as the Β-lactam penicillin G, by linkage to nanoparticles (NPs), could influence the killing efficiency against various pathogenic bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other multidrug resistant (MDR) strains.

Methods

The Β-lactam antibiotic penicillin G (PenG) was passively sorbed to fluorescent polystyrene NPs (20 nm) that were surface-functionalized with carboxylic acid (COO-NPs) or sulfate groups (SO4-NPs) to form a PenG-NP complex. Antimicrobial activities of PenG-NPs were evaluated against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including antibiotic resistant strains. …

The Absence Of Prophylactic Antibiotics Administration And The Surgical Site Infections Rate In Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Riva Ambardina Pradita, Larisa Paramitha Wibawa Jun 2020

The Absence Of Prophylactic Antibiotics Administration And The Surgical Site Infections Rate In Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Riva Ambardina Pradita, Larisa Paramitha Wibawa

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology & Venereology Indonesia

Background: The use of prophylactic antibiotics in dermatologic surgery, particularly in Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), remains a gray area. Despite the low rate of surgical site infection (SSI), SSI can result in some significant morbidities. Thus, numerous dermatologists keep administering prophylactic antibiotics in MMS.

Method: A search was conducted to identify clinically significant topics followed by literature review through the main available medical literature database. The three selected studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were then critically assessed for their validity, importance, and applicability using the guidance from Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine for Critical Appraisal …

Aptamer Hybrid Nanocomplexes As Targeting Components For Antibiotic/Gene Delivery Systems And Diagnostics: A Review, Navid Rabiee, Sepideh Ahmadi, Zeynab Arab, Mojtaba Bagherzadeh, Moein Safarkhani, Behzad Nasseri, Mohammad Rabiee, Mohammadreza Tahriri, Thomas J. Webster, Lobat Tayebi Jun 2020

With the passage of time and more advanced societies, there is a greater emergence and incidence of disease and necessity for improved treatments. In this respect, nowadays, aptamers, with their better efficiency at diagnosing and treating diseases than antibodies, are at the center of attention. Here, in this review, we first investigate aptamer function in various fields (such as the detection and remedy of pathogens, modification of nanoparticles, antibiotic delivery and gene delivery). Then, we present aptamer-conjugated nanocomplexes as the main and efficient factor in gene delivery. Finally, we focus on the targeted co-delivery of genes and drugs by nanocomplexes, …

Correlation Of Knowledge And Beliefs To Adherence With Antibiotic Use In Adult Patients At A Private Hospital In Sidoarjo, Muhammad Hasan Wattiheluw, Fauna Herawati, Setiasih Setiasih, Rika Yulia May 2020

Correlation Of Knowledge And Beliefs To Adherence With Antibiotic Use In Adult Patients At A Private Hospital In Sidoarjo, Muhammad Hasan Wattiheluw, Fauna Herawati, Setiasih Setiasih, Rika Yulia

Kesmas

Infectious diseases are one of the top ten causes of death in the world. Antibiotic therapy is administered for infectious diseases, but if bacteria are exposed to antibiotics continuously, then the bacteria are able to adapt to the medication, thereby resulting in antibiotic resistance. This condition results in an increase in mortality, long hospitalization period, and increased cost of antibiotic therapy and health services. Adherence to using antibiotics may be influenced by knowledge and beliefs about them. This study aimed to understand correlation between knowledge and belief with adherence to antibiotic use at a private hospital in Sidoarjo. This cross-sectional …

Antibiotic Stewardship And The Quality Of Life For Residents Over 65 Years, Reshma Beharry-Guest Jan 2020

Antibiotic Stewardship And The Quality Of Life For Residents Over 65 Years, Reshma Beharry-Guest

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Antibiotics were often over-prescribed in long term care facilities (LTCFs) and antibiotic stewardship guidelines, established by the CDC were not followed. The nursing home administrator was responsible for the quality of care for the residents and ensured that the facility met and/or exceeded the CMS antibiotic stewardship standard of care. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze operational secondary data collected from a Texas LTCF regarding antibiotic utilization for male and female residents over 65 years. The theoretical framework of the social cognitive theory was applicable for quality improvement in the LTCF setting. The data analysis showed that …

Online Availability Of Fish Antibiotics And Documented Intent For Self-Medication, Weiwei Zhang, Austin Williams, Nicole Griffith, Jessica Gaskins, P Brandon Bookstaver Jan 2020

Self-medication and antibiotic utilization without healthcare oversight may lead to delayed appropriate treatment, transmission of communicable infections, untoward adverse events, and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Previous data suggest people obtain over-the-counter (OTC) animal antibiotics for their personal use. This study examined the availability of OTC fish antibiotics online and the documented intent for self-medication. The authors conducted a web-based cross-sectional study using Google search engine to identify vendor websites selling fish antibiotics in the United States. Vendor websites were included if product information, consumer reviews, and comments were publicly available. Nine fish antibiotics were chosen due to their possibility of …
