Telehealth – which is the use of information and communication technology to provide clinical services to patients remotely – provides an opportunity to extend safe abortion services to women. A recent review article on telehealth for abortion service delivery found it to be acceptable, feasible and safe when compared to in-person service delivery. Despite the promising findings, the evidence base can and should be strengthened to optimize the impact of such services for women. The agency to decide one’s reproductive future is paramount, yet an estimated 75 percent of adolescent girls in the United States (U.S.) and 49 percent of those in low and middle-income countries experience mistimed or unwanted pregnancy. This dissertation characterized empirical representations of agency over the course of adolescence and investigated the relationship between agency and early and unwanted pregnancy and childbearing using data from three countries (India, Zambia and the U.S.).

Previous studies suggest that restricting access to abortion is a risk factor for adverse maternal and infant health. Trypanosoma evansi is a blood parasite protozoan that causes trypanosomiasis or surra in a variety of economically valued animals such as cattle and camels. This infection causes abortion in camels. The present study was conducted to evaluate the presence of Trypanosoma evansi in aborted fetuses of Iranian camels (Camelus dromedarius) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. In this study, 244 abomasal contents of aborted fetuses were collected from an Iranian camel herd in the east of Iran. The results showed that 41 of 244 (16.8%) aborted fetuses were infected with Trypanosoma evansi DNA. The results showed that a high percentage …

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, states have ordered the cessation of non-essential healthcare. Unfortunately, many conservative states have sought to capitalize on those orders to halt abortion care. In this short paper, we argue that abortion should not fall under any state’s non-essential healthcare order. Major medical organizations recognize that abortion is essential healthcare that must be provided even in a pandemic, and the law recognizes abortion as a time-sensitive constitutional right. When parents learn that their potential child has a life-limiting, often devastating, prenatal diagnosis, they are faced with the first (and perhaps, only) healthcare decisions they will make for their child. Many choose to terminate the pregnancy because they believe it is in their potential child’s best interest to avoid a short and painful life. I argue that these decisions should be protected in the same way that parental healthcare decisions are constitutionally protected after birth—including a parent’s refusal or withdrawal of life-saving treatment for an infant or child who is very sick or dying.
