Understanding The Significance Of Virtual Support During Global Pandemic In Young Adults Diagnosed With Hepatitis C, Veronika Arkhipova
Understanding The Significance Of Virtual Support During Global Pandemic In Young Adults Diagnosed With Hepatitis C, Veronika Arkhipova
Master's Projects and Capstones
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. In recent years, the prevalence of hepatitis C infections among 20 and 30 years of age has increased by 300 percent, and between 30 and 39 years by 400 percent. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, people diagnosed with Hepatitis C have lost access to mental health services and resources, including in-person meetings with support groups. Since most states enforced stay-at-home order, many community centers, non-profit organizations that work with Hepatitis C patients and the affected population provide limited to no access to support group meetings …

Introduction
By Dr. Ashish Sinha, MD, PhD, DABA, MBA, FASA
As a Program Director of a just established anesthesia program, one faces enough challenges. A curve ball that I was not expecting was one of my residents to inform me on July 3rd that he was feeling feverish with chills, had myalgia and a headache. First response in my mind, that I didn’t verbalize was, ”Anosmia too?” I arranged COVID testing ASAP in a drive-by setting, which we could avail immediately. My resident had driven from New Orleans, LA to Riverside, CA, making a few stops along the way, (food, …

The disproportionate impact of COVID on the mortality and morbidity of people of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds has been recognised and is under investigation. Here we present a different impact: that on the psyche. As three doctors of BAME heritage, we shared an experience of being redeployed from ophthalmology to the COVID Intensive Care Unit. We share our reflections on the experience and lessons learned.

Current circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic require residency programs to conduct virtual interviews. We draw upon our experience with virtual interviews from fall 2019, prior to COVID-19, and propose a potential implementation process for virtual interviewing strategies. We also describe potential pitfalls and strategies to mitigate them.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause an unprecedented level of disruption across every part of the globe. This disruption detrimentally affects the field of medical education; in particular, anatomical, surgical and clinical training, all which require hands-on experience. On the other hand, the pandemic not only brings new challenges in medical education but also opportunities for testing the validity of our old education paradigms and for developing the ability to embrace a rapid pace of change in better integrating new technologies in the medical curriculum. We contend that the future of medical education lies in the successful use of VR …

An Introduction To Clinical Simulation (Cs) For Orofacial Myologists: Covid-19’S Impact On Clinical Education, Hope C. Reed
International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy
COVID-19 has forced educational institutions to increasingly rely on technology to provide appropriate clinical experiences for students. Simulations and case studies have been used for decades, but COVID-19 thrust these resources into the forefront of clinical education. Clinical simulation (CS) is the use of alternative methods in the clinical preparation of students (American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2020). Forms of CS include simulators, standardized patients, virtual patients, digital mannequins, immersive reality, task trainers, and computer-based interactive experiences and often incorporate case studies (ASHA). This article draws upon clinical education in the primary certification fields for those who practice orofacial myofunctional therapy: speech-language …

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
Background
On March 17, 2020, the American Association of Medical Colleges issued a statement which “strongly supports medical schools pausing all student clinical rotations, effective immediately, until at least March 31.” The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine immediately withdrew third- and fourth-year students from clinical rotation sites, and developed alternative, online-based clerkship curricula to complete for the remainder of the academic year. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many challenges to Undergraduate Medical Education, and has deprived upper-level students of foundational, in-person, clinical experiences. The UTRGV School of Medicine Department of Neurology is among the first …

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social distancing protocols have accelerated the shift to online teaching across the globe. In Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs this means a shift from face-to-face laboratory instruction to self-directed learning with e-learning tools. Unfortunately, selecting and integrating an e-learning tool into a curriculum can be daunting. This article highlights key questions and practical suggestions instructors should consider in choosing the most effective option for their course and learners.

Factors In The Probability Of Covid-19 Transmission In University Classrooms, Charles Connor
Numeracy
University students and faculty members need an effective strategy to evaluate and reduce the probability that an individual will become infected with COVID-19 as a result of classroom interactions. Models are developed here that consider the probability an individual will become infected as a function of: prevalence of the disease in the university community, number of students in class, number of class meetings, and transmission rate in the classroom given the presence of an infected individual. Absolute probabilities that an individual will become infected in a classroom environment cannot be calculated because some of these factors have unknown values. Nevertheless, …

Covid-19 Impact On Radiology Students’ Distance Learning, Mary Lee, Fahameda Hassan, Zoya Vinokur
Covid-19 Impact On Radiology Students’ Distance Learning, Mary Lee, Fahameda Hassan, Zoya Vinokur
Publications and Research
Distance learning (DL) is a teaching tool that offers education to students remotely in various locations (Ruiz, 2006). The increase in distance learning education is evident in all types of educational programs including those in Radiologic Sciences. DL education programs are expected to comply with all standards just as traditional programs are (Aaron, 2015). With a traditional class setting, knowledge is taught at a given time and day, which is structured in terms of course development and attendance. It does not factor in the domestic and familial responsibilities of the students outside the classroom walls. What happens when a pandemic …

In the setting of the novel 2019 coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic, it has been challenging to provide medical students in the Emergency Medicine (EM) clerkship meaningful clinical experiences that would meet clinical course goals and objectives, as well as satisfy Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) requirements. During the EM clerkship, students play an integral role in interviewing patients, formulating treatment plans, facilitating patient discharges, and counseling patients. Immediately available direct and indirect supervision are paramount to ensure student learning and safe patient care. The authors present a novel clinical educational experience for senior medical students in an EM clerkship that …

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to patient deaths, strained health care systems, and economic uncertainty. Distress during pregnancy can lead to adverse outcomes for both parent and baby. A patient-friendly handout was created for pregnant patients to offer reassurance, incorporate mind-body recommendations to address stress, and offer screening tools to empower them to address mood concerns with their obstetric providers in the COVID-era.
