The Qualitative Report

Current approaches to assessing medication exposure fail to capture the complexity of the phenomenon and the context in which it occurs. This study’s purpose was to develop a typology of subgroups of patients who share common patterns of medication exposure. To create the typology, we used an exemplar sample of 30 patients in a large public healthcare system who had been prescribed the pharmacogenetically actionable opioids codeine or tramadol. Data related to medication exposure were drawn from large data repositories. Using a person-oriented qualitative approach, eight subgroups of patients who shared common patterns of medication exposure were identified. The subgroups …

β-Defensin 3 (BD3) was identified as a ligand for the melanocortin receptors (MCRs) in 2007, although the pharmacology activity of BD3 has not been clearly elucidated. Herein, it is demonstrated that human BD3 and mouse BD3 are full micromolar agonists at the MCRs. Furthermore, mouse β-defensin 1 (BD1) and human BD1 are also MCR micromolar agonists. This work identifies BD1 as an endogenous MCR ligand and clarifies the controversial role of BD3 as a micromolar agonist.

Effect Of Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia On Angiotensin Ii Receptors In The Central Nervous System., Barbara J Morgan, Nicole Schrimpf, Morgan Rothman, Ann Mitzey, Mark S Brownfield, Robert Charles Speth, John M Dopp

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) increases basal sympathetic nervous system activity, augments chemoreflex-induced sympathoexcitation, and raises blood pressure. All effects are attenuated by systemic or intracerebroventricular administration of angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) antagonists. This study aimed to quantify the effects of CIH on AT1R- and AT2R-like immunoreactivity in the rostroventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), central regions that are important components of the extended chemoreflex pathway. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to intermittent hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.10, 1 min at 4-min intervals) for 10 hr/day for …

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim Jan 2018

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Precocious puberty, measured by thelarche or menarche, is a well-established breast cancer risk factor. Using a unique and patented tissue engineering system we established cell lines from 48 primary cultures of normal breast tissue from reduction mammoplasties and used them as an in vitro model of thelarche, quantifying episphere formation and ductal differentiation. Differential ductal formation was observed based on ancestry. In light of African American (AA) precocious thelarche both in vivo and as we observed in vitro, we hypothesized that AA women would exhibit an increased proportion of breast stem cells, with greater potency for differentiation. Five AA cell …

Analysis Of Molecular Changes In 2 Types Of Non-Tumor Adjacent Breast Identified By Nucleotide Excision Repair In Early Stage Breast Cancer, Manasi Ramesh Pimpley Jan 2018

Analysis Of Molecular Changes In 2 Types Of Non-Tumor Adjacent Breast Identified By Nucleotide Excision Repair In Early Stage Breast Cancer, Manasi Ramesh Pimpley

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

NER plays an important role in remediating DNA damage. Latimer et al., have previously shown nucleotideexcision repair (NER) to be intrinsically deficient in stage I sporadic BC by function and gene expression. Previous work performed on 12 isogenically matched stage I tumors and non-tumor adjacent (NTA) samples identified 2 types of NTA tissue with regard to functional NER. One type that represented 75% ofthe samples, had lower NER capacity, similar to the tumor (Low: Low pair). The other type had high NER relative to the tumor (High: Low pair). Two isogenic NTA/tumor cell line pairs representing these 2 types ofNTA …

Addressing Opioid Misuse And Abuse Through Interprofessional Engagement And Education, Marta J. Brooks, Suzanne E. Holm, Shelene Thomas, Amy J. Rich Jan 2018

Addressing Opioid Misuse And Abuse Through Interprofessional Engagement And Education, Marta J. Brooks, Suzanne E. Holm, Shelene Thomas, Amy J. Rich

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: The purpose of this initiative was to develop and implement an interprofessional panel aimed to expose a university audience to the magnitude of opioid misuse and abuse, as well as demonstrate each health professional’s role in curbing the epidemic. Further, this experience was to provide a platform for interprofessional discussion and to share with attendees tangible action items to begin combatting the opioid epidemic.

Methods: An interdisciplinary committee of healthcare professionals collaborated to initiate a dialogue around opioid misuse and abuse to highlight the power of interprofessional (IP) collaboration in addressing the opioid epidemic. Each panel member shared …
