Virtual Reality As A Training Tool To Treat Physical Inactivity In Children, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus, Michael J. Richardson, Gregory D. Myer
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Lack of adequate physical activity in children is an epidemic that can result in obesity and other poor health outcomes across the lifespan. Physical activity interventions focused on motor skill competence continue to be developed, but some interventions, such as neuromuscular training (NMT), may be limited in how early they can be implemented due to dependence on the child’s level of cognitive and perceptual-motor development. Early implementation of motor-rich activities that support motor skill development in children is critical for the development of healthy levels of physical activity that carry through into adulthood. Virtual reality (VR) training may be beneficial …
Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn
Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn
Master's Projects and Capstones
An in-hospital fall is a devastating event for patients and care providers resulting in injuries, physiological and psychological patient declines, and sometimes deaths. Furthermore, fall related costs greatly increase hospitals’ expenses and cause massive distress to caregivers and health providers. Many patient-specific, organizational, and seemingly erratic factors contribute to the occurrence of in-hospital falls. Despite this, hospitals must undertake consistent evidence-based measures to prevent fall occurrences as much as possible.
The traditional nursing approach to falls prevention is not sufficient to control fall rates because the issue is too complex and must be approached from multiple perspectives rather than just …

Baseline Prevalence Study Of Hendrich Ii Fall-Risk Assessment Tool At A Local Community Hospital, Emanuelle Vasconcelos Barbosa Borba Pontual
Master's Projects and Capstones
Each year, 700,000 to 1,000,000 people in the United States fall in hospitals; 30%–35% of those sustain injuries, and 20% of falls will cause serious traumatic injuries. Yet, research shows that close to one-third of these falls could be prevented. This paper presents the analyses of two fall-risk tools, Hendrich II fall risk model (HFRM II) and PMAT, in a local community hospital. Extensive review of literature and statistical analysis of 106 patients’ assessments practices were used to determine the current assessment skills for falls and PMAT. The aim was to understand if RNs are using the tools appropriately and …

Evidence-based practice requires that health care providers interpret the best research evidence in the context of their clinical experience, while at the same time considering client knowledge and experiences. Although health care providers are becoming increasingly skilled at the evaluation of research evidence, client values and self-identified health issues are often neglected within the evidence-based practice process. Ignoring these key aspects of person-centered practice may lead to interventions that fail to target implications of a client’s disease that are important to occupational participation and quality of life. A focus on person-centeredness is particularly important in progressive neurodegenerative disorders such as …

Secondary purposes were to review the efficacy of guided imagery, risk of …
A Comparison Of Neuromuscular Control Between Subjects With And Without Chronic Ankle Instability, Hatem Jaber
A Comparison Of Neuromuscular Control Between Subjects With And Without Chronic Ankle Instability, Hatem Jaber
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Ankle sprains are common and potentially disabling musculoskeletal injuries occur among physically active individuals. A subsequent problem that is commonly encountered by clinicians due to ankle sprains is the development of ongoing instability. The presence of ankle instability has been linked to impairments in postural and neuromuscular control; however, inconsistent findings have been reported. These discrepancies deem the need to further investigate and provide additional knowledge regarding postural and neuromuscular control strategies utilized by this population. This may enhance the current understanding of chronic ankle instability (CAI) and help to understand how rehabilitation can be customized to specifically target and …

Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Fibromatosis colli presents in 0.4% of infants as a firm palpable mass in the middle or lower thirds of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.1 The typical age of presentation ranges between two to four weeks of life. It is unilateral in 75% of cases and occurs due to fibrosis within the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Although no single entity has been able to explain the etiology, birth trauma is often attributable. Ultrasonography is the initial investigation of choice. This benign condition is often treated conservatively, rarely requiring surgical intervention. Here are two cases from our centre
Effects Of Direction Time Constraints And Walking Speed On Turn Strategies And Gait Adaptations In Healthy Older And Young Adults, Dennis Torre
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Hip fractures can be life-threatening, debilitating, and costly. The odds for hip fracture increases from impact of sideways falls. While turning has been strongly associated with hip fracture & sideways falls, the distinction between the risks for walking-turns as opposed to low-velocity in-place turning is not clear. The present study sought to fill a gap as previous research had not compared walking-turn performance in young & healthy older adults at low-fall risk within the same study and response-conditions of speed interacting with direction-cue time constraints. Spatial-temporal variables representative of AP braking/propulsion (i.e. stride-length & speed) & ML stability (left/right H-H …

Recurrent Renal Cancer In Birt-Hogg-Dube Syndrome: A Case Report, Hammad Ather, Nida Zahid
Recurrent Renal Cancer In Birt-Hogg-Dube Syndrome: A Case Report, Hammad Ather, Nida Zahid
Department of Surgery
Introduction: Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHDS) is a rare autosomal dominant disease. It is caused by constitutional mutations in the FLCN gene. Since BHDS is a rare syndrome therefore it is unknown to many physicians. However, it is important to identify this rare syndrome at early stages because incidence of renal cancer in BHD patients is very high and its detection at early stages can prevent its metastasis. Hence, we want to present a case of BHDS and draw the attention of the treating physician to this rare inherited disorder and discuss its appropriate diagnosis and management.CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case …

© 2017 The Author(s). Background: Back pain is a leading contributor to disability, healthcare costs, and lost work. Family physicians are the most common first point of contact in the healthcare system for people with back pain, but physiotherapists (PTs) may be able to support the primary care team through evidence-based primary care. A cluster randomized trial is needed to determine the clinical, health system, and societal impact of a primary care model that integrates physiotherapists at the first visit for people with back pain. Prior to conducting a future fully powered cluster randomized trial, we need to demonstrate feasibility …
Patient And Provider Experiences With Relationship, Information, And Management Continuity, Jeanette Jackson, Gail Mackean, Tim Cooke, Markus Lahtinen
Patient And Provider Experiences With Relationship, Information, And Management Continuity, Jeanette Jackson, Gail Mackean, Tim Cooke, Markus Lahtinen
Patient Experience Journal
From 2003 to 2014, the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) monitored patient experiences with healthcare services through a biennial Satisfaction and Experience with Healthcare Services (SEHCS) survey. The findings consistently showed a direct link between coordination of care, an aspect of continuity of care, and healthcare outcomes. Specifically, it showed that better coordination is linked to positive outcomes; the reverse is also true. Given the critical role continuity of care plays in the healthcare system, the HQCA conducted in-depth interviews, interactive feedback sessions and focus groups with patients and providers to explore factors that influence both seamless and fragmented …

E-Visits For Early Post-Operative Visits Following Orthopaedic Surgery Can They Add Efficiency Without Sacrificing Effectiveness, William G. Jeffery
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
We asked 217 sport surgery and 135 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients to complete a questionnaire (e-Visit) before attending their two and six-week post-operative appointment. Our primary objective was to use the questions asked of patients prior to their appointment to develop a model that could be used as web-based e-Visit to predict early post-operative adverse events. Gold standard comparison was the surgeon’s opinion as to the presence or absence of an event at follow-up. Secondary objective was evaluation of a simplified model. We found good area under the curve (AUC) statistics (0.76 (95% CI 0.69 - 0.84) and 0.80 …

Herniated Lumbar Disc & Nursing Care, Besnik Elshani, Salih Krasniqi, Rexhep Gjyliqi
Herniated Lumbar Disc & Nursing Care, Besnik Elshani, Salih Krasniqi, Rexhep Gjyliqi
UBT International Conference
Spinal disc herniation, also known as a slipped disc, is a medical condition affecting the spine in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central portion to bulge out beyond the damaged outer rings. Disc herniation is usually due to age-related degeneration of the outer ring, known as the anulus fibrosus, although trauma, lifting injuries, or straining have been implicated as well. Tears are almost always postero-lateral (on the back of the sides) owing to the presence of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the spinal canal. Disc herniations are normally a further …
Effects Of Malformed Or Absent Valves To Lymphatic Fluid Transport And Lymphedema In Vivo In Mice, Akshay S. Pujari
Effects Of Malformed Or Absent Valves To Lymphatic Fluid Transport And Lymphedema In Vivo In Mice, Akshay S. Pujari
Masters Theses
Lymph is primarily composed of fluid and proteins from the blood circulatory system that drain into the space surrounding cells, interstitial space. From the interstitial space, the fluid enters and circulates in the lymphatic system until it is delivered into the venous system. In contrast to the blood circulatory system, the lymphatic system lacks a central pumping organ dictating the predominant driving pressure and velocity of lymph. Transport of lymph via capillaries, pre-collecting and collecting lymphatic vessels relies on the synergy between pressure gradients, local tissue motion, valves and lymphatic vessel contractility. The direction of lymph transport is regulated by …

Attrition In School Rowing In New Zealand: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Simon R. Walters, Rebecca Beattie, Anthony R. H. Oldham, Sarah-Kate Millar
The Qualitative Report
It is widely acknowledged that involvement in sport has positive physical and psychosocial benefits for adolescents. However, concerns have been expressed, both in New Zealand and internationally, about the relatively high attrition rates in youth sport. This qualitative study captured the experiences of eight (five male, three female) adolescents who were no longer participating in high school rowing programs in New Zealand. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, and we conducted an inductive thematic analysis. A secondary analysis was then conducted using a self-determination and basic psychological needs framework that placed specific emphasis on need satisfaction and need thwarting. Key …
