Acute Injuries In Recreational And Competitive Surfers: Incidence, Severity, Location, Type And Mechanism, James Furness, Wayne Hing, Joe Walsh, Allan Abbott, Jeremy Sheppard, Michael Climstein

James Furness

This is the largest surfing-specific survey that included both recreational and competitive surfers conducted in Australia to date. The shoulder, ankle, head, and face were identified as the key regions where acute injuries occur in surfers. This research may aid in reducing the occurrence of injury through musculoskeletal screening in these key injury-prone regions and through the use of sport-specific strength training and conditioning.

The assessment of weekly and even monthly surf practice/training hours is vital for understanding the loads these up and coming surfers endure. Such information will help understand what kind of training these athletes are undertaking, how long they are surfing, what they consider training, and also areas that should be improved upon in terms of specific training. The purpose of this study was to establish surfers' training hours in terms of strength, balance and conditioning hours, as well as surfing hours, coached hours and competition hours. The monitoring of the athletes will provide insights into the weekly surf hours compared …

Influence Of Anthropometric And Upper Body Strength Qualities On Surfboard Paddling Kinematics, Joseph Coyne Jan 2015

Influence Of Anthropometric And Upper Body Strength Qualities On Surfboard Paddling Kinematics, Joseph Coyne

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Competitive surfing is an international professional water sport of which a key factor in performance appears to be surfboard paddling ability. Research on surfing performance is relatively novel and there is very limited data as to how anthropometric and upper extremity strength variables influence not just surfboard paddling but also surfing ability.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was threefold. The first purpose was to evaluate the reliability of Pull Up and Dip 1RM strength assessments, the ratio between the two exercises, and a surfboard endurance paddle assessment. The second purpose was to establish if there were discriminative factors between …
