Well-Born: Black Women And The Infertility Crisis No One Is Talking About, Kaara Baptiste
Well-Born: Black Women And The Infertility Crisis No One Is Talking About, Kaara Baptiste
Capstones
Black women are twice as likely to experience infertility than white women, but are less likely to seek treatment or to have successful fertility results once treated. Despite this alarming number, this topic is not often discussed, even among the black community. My narrative piece t tells the story of a black woman confronting her infertility diagnosis and the role her race played in her fertility treatment, while exploring the role racism and sexuality have had in keeping this issue in the shadows.

BACKGROUND: The evolution of reproductive self-sacrifice is well understood from kin theory, yet our understanding of how actual genes influence the expression of reproductive altruism is only beginning to take shape. As a model in the molecular study of social behaviour, the honey bee Apis mellifera has yielded hundreds of genes associated in their expression with differences in reproductive status of females, including genes directly associated with sterility, yet there has not been an attempt to link these candidates into functional networks that explain how workers regulate sterility in the presence of queen pheromone. In this study we use available …

Menoufia Medical Journal
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the outcome of varicocelectomy on the hormonal and spermatogenic function of the testis. Background Varicocele of the testis is the most common male factor causing subfertility. The harmful effect of varicocele on the testis has been documented, and the value of varicocelectomy in improving spermatogenesis has also been confirmed. However, the effect of varicocele on steroidogenesis and the role of varicocelectomy in improving testicular testosterone production are still under evaluation. Patients and methods This prospective study included 46 patients with bilateral varicocele. Semen analysis was carried out and serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), …

Psychological distress and infertility are linked in a complex pattern, such that distress may be a cause of infertility and reduce the probability of achieving a pregnancy at the same time that infertility may be a cause of psychological distress. Although infertile women are not more likely to be characterized by psychopathology, they are more likely to experience higher levels of distress than comparison groups. Infertile men also experience psychological distress, but women experience more infertility distress than men. Both infertility and its treatment are stressors putting a heavy psychological strain on couple relationships. Whereas there is general agreement about …

Clinical And Prognostic Importance Of Chromosomal Abnormalities, Y Chromosome Microdeletions, And Cftr Gene Mutations In Individuals With Azoospermia Or Severe Oligospermia, Zeynep Ocak, Uğur Üyetürk, Muhammet Murat Di̇nçer
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To illustrate the importance of genetic screening in the assessment of fertility and the correct diagnosis in patients with azoospermia or severe oligospermia. Materials and methods: This study examined 500 patients with reproductive failure, having fewer than 5 million sperm/mL detected in at least 2 consecutive spermiograms, who presented at a medical genetics polyclinic between 2008 and 2012. Metaphase preparations obtained from cell cultures were stained by trypsin-Giemsa banding. After DNA isolation, Y chromosome loci, including AZFa (SY84, SY86), AZFb (SY127, SY134), AZFc (SY254 SY255), and AZFd, were amplified by polymerase chain reaction using specific primers. Thirty-five patients with congenital …
