Using Simulation In Novel Ways To Teach Patient Safety (Qsen) And Understand The Student Experience, Rachel Ramsey, Susan Ahrens, Cheryl Rockwell, Katrina Kessler, Pamela Dekoninck
Rachel A. Ramsey
This symposium provides a rich description of the ways in which simulation can be understood and applied to solve challenges in clinical education. These presentations are the results of work that was done in a nursing program in the Midwest. The authors of the presentations are all faculty at the University in the Nursing Department and have worked together for three years to understand, develop, and integrate high fidelity clinical simulation with sophomore nursing students. This symposium provides participants with the ways simulation can be applied in education to evaluate learning and solidify nursing knowledge. The symposium will start with …
The Development Of A Tool To Measure Qsen Competencies, Rachel Ramsey
The Development Of A Tool To Measure Qsen Competencies, Rachel Ramsey
Rachel A. Ramsey
In response to the IOM’s call for change in health care education, the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Project established six competencies to help nurse educators design curricula. The faculty at one Midwestern University had incorporated these competencies in their program at all levels, but recognized an assessment tool was needed to evaluate students’ clinical performances related to these competencies. The presentation that follows will discuss a simulation project that resulted in the development of the QSEN Competency Assessment Tool (QSEN-CAT). While students participated in an extended two-hour simulated clinical experience, faculty observers recorded clinical behaviors that demonstrated …

Technological Ubiquity: Educating Educators For The Dynamic Digital Landscape, Carol Sternberger
Carol S Sternberger
Educators must be responsive to the dynamic, technology rich healthcare environment. It is important for universities to move beyond expecting graduates to have isolated technology skills. Designing curricula that will produce graduates who are comfortable using technology and possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize data requires a different approach to education. The paper focuses on the various technologies integrated in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Best practices, evidence-based methods and integrated concepts from a requisite informatics course were foundational in the course assignments that focused on the …

Preparing Nurse Educators: Designing Hps Simulations Using Cerner Aes., Carol Sternberger
Carol S Sternberger
In this presentation we will share the artifacts created in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Nursing education must become responsive to the dynamic, technology rich healthcare environment. Incorporating electronic health records (EHR) and human patient simulators (HPS) into nursing education provide a harm-free milieu for students to develop clinical judgment by interacting with patients, interdisciplinary teams, and family members. The nursing department had several HPS but did not have access to EHR software, an integral piece of the simulation experience. Incorporating Cerner’s Academic Education Solution (AES) with existing HPS …
