Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are community based centers created to provide comprehensive primary and preventive care to individuals unable to access care in the commercial medical system (e.g. related to poverty, and/or race-ethnicity). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) proposes offering Medicaid coverage to many such individuals, thus, FQHCs should receive many new Medicaid enrollees. The ACA has triggered a number of new ideas to improve affordability, health status and patient experience, commonly known as the “triple aim.” These initiatives include quality incentive programs, payment reform, and the promotion of medical homes and accountable care organizations (ACOs). These are in …

Tammy Toscos, Nursing Informatics Professor, and Shannon Johnson, Health Sciences Librarian, will share their experiences harnessing the Learning Management System for information literacy instruction and how this has affected IL instruction delivery at IPFW. They will discuss their use of online technology to expand the traditional bibliographic instruction into new realms, increasing the number of students they reach and allowing for more in-depth instruction to take place.

The importance of regular physical activity to overall health has been well established, yet adults in the United States are leading increasingly sedentary lives. Research suggests that lowering perceived barriers to exercise is an effective strategy for encouraging physical activity. This article describes the top barriers that emerged from a qualitative analysis of message board traffic from a three-month healthy lifestyle intervention that promoted physical activity and healthy eating. The findings further elaborate known barriers to physical activity-two of which are not reported as key barriers in prior research-and illustrate the value of a grounded approach to studying health and …

In this paper we describe findings from two studies aimed at understanding how health monitoring technology affects the parent-child relationship, examining emotional response and barriers to using this type of technology. We present suggestions for the design of health monitoring technology intended to enhance self-care in children without creating parent-child conflict. Our recommendations integrate the study findings, developmental stage specific concerns, and prior HCI research aimed at children’s health.

In this article, the authors share their experiences with the creation and implementation of an online self-paced information literacy instruction for graduate students of nursing. Before You Write: Six Keys to success is a non-credit required online course attached to the Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) graduate nursing program. The rationale behind the creation of the course was to help graduate students recognize areas where their information literacy skills may be lacking or have become outdated and provide them with tools to increase their proficiency, while still early in their first semester of the program. It consists …

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to evaluate how the use of a pervasive blood glucose monitoring (BGM) technology relates to glycemic control, report of self-care behavior, and emotional response to BGM of children with type 1 diabetes and their parents. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Forty-eight children aged less than 12 years (mean 8.8 years) with type 1 diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two study groups, a control group (conventional care without technology) or an experimental group (conventional care with technology), and followed for 12 months. Families in the experimental group were given the Automated Diabetes Management System (ADMS), …

Ever-changing technological advances in healthcare have challenged nursing faculty to design curricula that will produce graduates who are not only comfortable using technology, but more importantly, possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize clinical data that are stored in electronic health records (EHRs). Federal mandates put forth through the HITECH Act, 2009 require all health care institutions to fully adopt EHRs by the year 2014. This transition will lead to changes in the way nurses practice, making it important for educators to provide nursing students with the necessary informatics skills to provide safe and high quality care. Indiana-Purdue University …

Information literacy, evidence-based practice (EBP), and informatics are fundamental to delivering culturally competent, safe patient care. Yet most nursing schools continue to educate students in traditional ways; only a minority integrate high-fidelity simulations, require evidence-based literature to support nursing interventions, identify the five core competencies for healthcare professions delineated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and incorporate the electronic health record (EHR) to stimulate critical thinking and decision making. The Health Information Technology Act (2009) requires all healthcare facilities to fully adopt EHRs by 2014. This will change how nurses practice, underscoring the importance of teaching students about informatics and …

In today's competitive job market, many working adults are returning to graduate school with rusty information literacy and computer skills. Before You Write: Six Keys to Success was designed to re-introduce returning adult students to the basic skills they will need for success in a graduate program. These six modules are self-paced and utilize real world scenario based assessments. In this session, a librarian and an informatics professor will discuss the inception and implementation of this collaborative information literacy/informatics initiative.
