Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of adult disability. While joint replacement surgery is a common treatment option for end-stage disease, non-surgical management is critical for preventing disability and maintaining quality of life. Although therapeutic ultrasound, which applies mechanical and may also apply thermal energy in the form of sound waves, is widely used to treat various musculoskeletal disorders such as bone fractures, tendinopathy, and muscle contusions, its symptom- and disease-modifying effects on osteoarthritis have not been clearly demonstrated. Recent clinical evidence indicates therapeutic ultrasound is capable of relieving OAassociated pain and improving function of …
A Model To Reduce The Proportion Of Inappropriate Referrals To Surgery For Patients With Osteoarthritis: A Pilot Study, Laura K. Churchill
A Model To Reduce The Proportion Of Inappropriate Referrals To Surgery For Patients With Osteoarthritis: A Pilot Study, Laura K. Churchill
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A significant proportion of patients referred for total knee arthroplasty are inappropriate candidates for surgery, which warrants remediation of the referral process to reduce wait times for the initial consult. We conducted a prospective feasibility investigation involving 166 patients referred from their general practitioner for a consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon at a joint replacement clinic. The aim of this study was to improve the validity of data collection forms and to improve the feasibility of collecting data in a clinical setting. We also wanted to strengthen our estimate of the sample size to inform the timeline. We were able …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: The purpose of this systematic review was to examine effectiveness of land-based exercise interventions for improving quality of life (QOL) of individuals with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.
Methods: A systematic search included PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Academic Search Premier, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Inclusion criteria included land-based exercise interventions aimed to improve lower extremity strength and QOL, published since 2000. Exclusion criteria included OA of joints other than the knee, and aquatic-based and surgical interventions. Studies were evaluated using a modified version of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) methodology score.
Results: Level of …

The aim of this study was to compare the frequencies of surgical interventions between patients receiving intraarticular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injection and those receiving only oral antiinflammatory drug treatment at the end of a 1-year follow-up period. Materials and methods: A total of 705 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (OA) between 2007 and 2009 were included in this study. Their records were investigated retrospectively. We divided 218 of the patients into 3 groups according to the Kellgren–Lawrence criteria, and they received sodium hyaluronate once a week for 3 weeks. Another 487 patients with gonarthrosis served as group 2 and were …
