Mast Cell–Derived Particles Deliver Peripheral Signals To Remote Lymph Nodes, Christian A. Kunder, Ashley L. St. John, Guojie Li, Kam W. Leong, Brent Berwin, Herman F. Staats, Soman N. Abraham

Dartmouth Scholarship

During infection, signals from the periphery are known to reach draining lymph nodes (DLNs), but how these molecules, such as inflammatory cytokines, traverse the significant distances involved without dilution or degradation remains unclear. We show that peripheral mast cells, upon activation, release stable submicrometer heparin-based particles containing tumor necrosis factor and other proteins. These complexes enter lymphatic vessels and rapidly traffic to the DLNs. This physiological drug delivery system facilitates communication between peripheral sites of inflammation and remote secondary lymphoid tissues.

The Frequency Of Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia In Patients Undergoing Elective Cardiac Bypass Surgeries, Natasha Bahadur Ali, Bushra Moiz, Yasmin Rehman, Mohammad Salman, Shahid Ahmed Sami

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: To determine the frequency of Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT) in patients undergoing elective cardiac bypass surgeries and to observe the platelets evolution post surgically in these patients.
Method: A prospective study was designed and 100 unselected consecutive patients undergoing elective cardiac bypass surgery were enrolled and evaluated. The clinical and laboratory details were noted before and after surgery. Their platelet counts were observed from day 0 (prior to surgery) to day 5 post operatively. Particle gel immunoassay was used to demonstrate the presence of antibodies against heparin-platelet factor 4 complexes.
Results: There were 86 males and 14 females with …

Retrospective Evaluation Of Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis In The Adult Cancer Population, David J. Reeves, Chin Y. Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Study objectives. Hospitalized cancer patients are at an increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and it is recommended they receive pharmacologic prophylaxis unless otherwise contraindicated. The majority of data supporting this recommendation comes from sub-group analyses and extrapolation of data gathered in general medical/surgical patients. This study seeks to assess the safety and efficacy of VTE prophylaxis in cancer patients admitted to our institution.

Methods. Charts of patients 18—89 years of age receiving VTE prophylaxis with unfractionated heparin, low molecular weigh heparin, or fondaparinux while admitted to Karmanos Cancer Center between September and October 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. Risk factors …
