The Development Of New Concepts For Assessing Reproductive Toxicity Applicable To Large Scale Toxicological Programmes, S. Bremer, C. Pellizzer, S. Hoffmann, T. Seidle, T. Hartung

Experimentation Collection

Large scale toxicological testing programmes which are currently ongoing such as the new European chemical legislation REACH require the development of new integrated testing strategies rather than applying traditional testing schemes to thousands of chemicals. The current practice of requiring in vivo testing for every possible adverse effect endanger the success of these programmes due (i) to limited testing facilities and sufficient capacity of scientific/technical knowledge for reproductive toxicity; (ii) an unacceptable number of laboratory animals involved (iii) an intolerable number of chemicals classified as false positive.

A key aspect of the implementation of new testing strategies is the determination …

The Prevalence Of Incontinence Pre And Post-Lung Transplantation, Dianne White, Kathy Stiller Oct 2007

The Prevalence Of Incontinence Pre And Post-Lung Transplantation, Dianne White, Kathy Stiller

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

An increased prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) is reported in patients with chronic lung disease because of the stress that repeated coughing places on the pelvic floor. To date, it is not known if lung transplantation (LTx) affects the prevalence of UI. Purpose: to compare the prevalence, severity and impact of urinary / faecal incontinence in adult patients pre- and post-LTx. Method: patients registered with the Royal Adelaide Hospital Lung Transplant Unit were eligible for participation. The prevalence, severity, and impact of incontinence was measured using a questionnaire administered in a private interview. Results: Ninety-four patients (44 males, 50 females; …

Age-Specific Prevalence And Years Of Healthy Life In A System With 3 Health States, Paula Diehr Sep 2007

Age-Specific Prevalence And Years Of Healthy Life In A System With 3 Health States, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Consider a 3-state system with one absorbing state, such as Healthy, Sick, and Dead. Over time, the prevalence of the Healthy state will approach an 'equilibrium' value that is independent of the initial conditions. We derived this equilibrium prevalence (Prev:Equil) as a function of the local transition probabilities. We then used Prev:Equil to estimate the expected number of years spent in the healthy state over time. This estimate is similar to the one calculated by multi-state life table methods, and has the advantage of having an associated standard error. In longitudinal data for older adults, the standard error was accurate …

The Etiology Of Multiple Sclerosis And Correlation Of The Distribution Of The Disease With Migration And Settlement History Of Northern Europeans, Kristin M. Gunderson Jul 2007

The Etiology Of Multiple Sclerosis And Correlation Of The Distribution Of The Disease With Migration And Settlement History Of Northern Europeans, Kristin M. Gunderson

Public Health Theses

The geographic disparity of multiple sclerosis has been noted in the literature for well over a century. The frequency of the disease varies significantly both within countries and in different parts of the world. The goal of this project is to give new insight regarding the etiology of multiple sclerosis. Several theories regarding the etiology of the disease have been reviewed, including a geographic theory, a nutritional theory, and a genetic theory. Although the geographic and nutritional theories have been thoroughly investigated by researchers, neither of them provides a conclusive explanation for the etiology of the disease, and there are …

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

This study was undertaken to develop a model to predict the incidence of typhoid in children based on adults’ perception of prevalence of enteric fever in the wider community. Typhoid cases among children, aged 5-15 years, from epidemic regions in five Asian countries were confirmed with a positive Salmonella Typhi culture of the blood sample. Estimates of the prevalence of enteric fever were obtained from random samples of adults in the same study sites. Regression models were used for establishing the prediction equation. The percentages of enteric fever reported by adults and cases of typhoid incidence per 100,000, detected through …

The Interplay Of Obesity And Asthma, James Plumb, Rickie Brawer, Nancy Brisbon Jan 2007

The Interplay Of Obesity And Asthma, James Plumb, Rickie Brawer, Nancy Brisbon

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

The relationships, interactions, and association between obesity and asthma are complex, and are active sources of hypotheses and research. An association between obesity and asthma has been reported in many studies, although considerable debate about the existence of the association and its meaning still exists. Potential associative relationships may result from genetics, immune system modifications, and mechanical mechanisms. The rising prevalence of asthma and obesity in children and adults, and the significant morbidity from both, makes it imperative that clinicians recognize the importance of weight management in patients with and without asthma.

Cryptosporidiosis Among Children Attending Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital, Gaza, Palestine, Adnan Ibrahim Al-Hindi, Abdelraouf A. Elmanama, Kamal Jad Allah Elnabris Jan 2007

Cryptosporidiosis Among Children Attending Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital, Gaza, Palestine, Adnan Ibrahim Al-Hindi, Abdelraouf A. Elmanama, Kamal Jad Allah Elnabris

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in patients with diarrhea who attended Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital in Gaza. Materials and Methods: From January to May 2005, single stool specimens from each of 416 children attending Al-Nasser Hospital were examined by Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) stain and ELISA for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Results: Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 62 (14.9%) of the tested specimens by acid-fast staining technique and in 68 (16.3%) using ELISA kit. The number of infected females was found to be significantly higher than males (P = 0.03). The highest number of …

[Pain In The Elderly: Prevalence And Associated Factors] Dolor En Adultos Mayores De 50 Años: Prevalencia Y Factores Asociados, Abel Jesús Barragán-Berlanga, Silvia Mejía-Arango, Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo

School of Medicine Publications and Presentations

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and the factors associated with pain in the Mexican elderly.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Persons ages 50 years or older answered the question: "Do you often suffer physical pain?" Prevalences were obtained, after which multivariate analyses were conducted for the entire sample and for each age group to determine the associated factors.

RESULTS: Pain prevalence was 41.5%, more frequent in women (48.3% vs. 33.6%) and increased with age. There was a lower prevalence for persons with more education. Pain was directly associated with the report of arthritis, lung disease, falls, hypertension, depression, stroke, cancer history and …

The Prevalence Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Sensu Lato In Ixodes Ricinus Ticks In The Sinop Region Of Turkey, Turabi̇ Güneş, Serpi̇l Kaya, Ömer Poyraz, Aynur Engi̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks, which are the primary vectors of this spirochete, as well as to investigate the effect of I. ricinus population density on the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. Ticks were collected by blanket dragging in 13 different forest regions of Sinop, Turkey, and its vicinity. Ticks were identified under a stereomicroscope. I. ricinus (n = 334), I. hexagonus (n = 5), Rhipicephalus spp. (n = 10), Dermacentor spp. (n = 7), and Hyalomma spp. (n = 5) were collected. Direct immunofluorescence was …
