This article provides the first anatomically labeled, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -based atlas of the subadult and fetal Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus) brain. It differs from previous MRI-based atlases of cetaceans in that it was created from images of fresh, postmortem brains in situ rather than extracted, formalin-fixed brains. The in situ images displayed the classic hallmarks of odontocete brains: fore-shortened orbital lobes and pronounced temporal width. Olfactory structures were absent and auditory regions (e.g., temporal lobes and inferior colliculi) were enlarged. In the subadult and fetal postmortem MRI scans, the hippocampus was identifiable, despite the relatively small size …

Paraumbilical Collateral Veins On Mri As Possible Protection Against Portal Venous Thrombosis In Candidates For Liver Transplantation, Sachit Verma, Donald G. Mitchell, Yulia Lakhman, Diane Bergin, Ronald J. Dolin, Cataldo Doria, Laurence Parker Oct 2007

Paraumbilical Collateral Veins On Mri As Possible Protection Against Portal Venous Thrombosis In Candidates For Liver Transplantation, Sachit Verma, Donald G. Mitchell, Yulia Lakhman, Diane Bergin, Ronald J. Dolin, Cataldo Doria, Laurence Parker

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Background: We retrospectively evaluate the potential protective influence of patent paraumblical vein (PUV) collaterals against portal vein (PV) thrombosis and reduced PV diameter in candidates for orthotopic liver transplant (OLT)

Methods: Dynamic 3D contrast-enhanced MRI at 1.5T was obtained in 309 patients with cirrhosis without evidence of malignancy. All MR studies were reviewed by one reader for PUV collaterals, PV thrombosis and PV diameter. Statistical analysis was performed by Fisher exact tests; 50 selected studies were reviewed independently by two additional readers to determine interobserver agreement via intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).

Results: Patent PUV was noted in …

Acute Stroke Secondary To Internal Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Mri Findingsand Treatment With Endovascularcoiling, Mohammad Wasay, Alper Dai, Neeraj Dubey, Saadat Kamran Jul 2007

Acute Stroke Secondary To Internal Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Mri Findingsand Treatment With Endovascularcoiling, Mohammad Wasay, Alper Dai, Neeraj Dubey, Saadat Kamran

Department of Medicine

Internal carotid artery pseudoaneurysms are uncommon. We report a young man with history of trivialtrauma who presented with middle cerebral artery stroke.Head CT scan revealed a right parapharyngeal mass. MRI confirmed the diagnosis of internal carotidpseudoaneurysm. Cerebral angiogram showed dissection of internal carotid artery with a large pseudoaneurysm and almost complete occlusion of vessel distal to aneurysm.Vessel was obliterated by fibercoiling and gluing byendovascular technique to diminish risk of furthere mbolization. MRI characteristics of carotid pseudoaneurysms and role of endovascular treatment arediscussed.

Clinical Features, Eeg Findings And Outcome In Patients With Bilateral Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia And Epilepsy, Aysun Ünal, Serap Saygi Jan 2007

Clinical Features, Eeg Findings And Outcome In Patients With Bilateral Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia And Epilepsy, Aysun Ünal, Serap Saygi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: To review the clinical, electrophysiological and neuroimaging data of eight adult patients (4F/4M) with epilepsy and bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) after a long duration of follow-up. Materials and Methods: The clinical charts were reviewed for demographic and clinical features, seizure types and frequency, treatment and prognosis of all eight patients who were under follow-up by one of the authors (SS). The recordings of video-EEG monitoring with scalp electrodes in five patients and routine EEGs in all patients were reviewed. Results: The clinical semiology was in accord with seizures originating from temporal lobe region in four patients, while an …

The Quantitative Genetics Of Neurodevelopment: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Childhood And Adolescence, James Eric Schmitt Jan 2007

The Quantitative Genetics Of Neurodevelopment: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study Of Childhood And Adolescence, James Eric Schmitt

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the causes of individual differences in brain structure may give clues about the etiology of cognition, personality, and psychopathology, and also may identify endophenotypes for molecular genetic studies on brain development. We performed a comprehensive statistical genetic study of anatomic neuroimaging data from a large pediatric sample (N=600+) of twins and family members from the Child Psychiatry Branch at the NIMH. These analyses included variance decomposition of structural volumetric endophenotypes at several levels of resolution, voxel-level analysis of cortical thickness, assessment of gene by age interaction, several multivariate genetic analyses, and a search for genetically-mediated brain-behavioral relationships. These analyses …
