An Insight Into The Sialome Of The Oriental Rat Flea, Xenopsylla Cheopis (Rots), John F. Andersen, B. Joseph Hinnebusch, David A. Lucas, Thomas P. Conrads, Timothy D. Veenstra, Van M. Pham, José M.C. Ribeiro

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The salivary glands of hematophagous animals contain a complex cocktail that interferes with the host hemostasis and inflammation pathways, thus increasing feeding success. Fleas represent a relatively recent group of insects that evolved hematophagy independently of other insect orders.

RESULTS: Analysis of the salivary transcriptome of the flea Xenopsylla cheopis, the vector of human plague, indicates that gene duplication events have led to a large expansion of a family of acidic phosphatases that are probably inactive, and to the expansion of the FS family of peptides that are unique to fleas. Several other unique polypeptides were also uncovered. Additionally, …

Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention On The Head Of Bed Elevation In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Randall L. Johnson Jan 2007

Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention On The Head Of Bed Elevation In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Randall L. Johnson

Faculty Dissertations

Elevating the head of bed (HOB) reduces risks for aspiration and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in the adult population. Educational interventions have resulted in improvements in achieving a target HOB elevation of 30° in adults. Limited research has addressed this intervention in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The aim of this study was to determine if an educational intervention for the PICU staff would result in improvement in the HOB elevation in the PICU. Four research questions were studied: (1) What is the common practice related to the elevation of the HOB in the PICU? (2) Is there a …

Light Therapy: The Effectiveness Of Light Therapy On Pain And Swelling Of Acute Lower Extremity Sprains And Strains Of Collegiate Athletes, Elisabeth A. Martin

Master of Education Research Theses

This thesis investigated light therapy to discover if this therapeutic modality had any effect on pain and swelling in acute lower extremity sprains and strains of collegiate athletes. The subjects were 18-22 year old male and female collegiate athletes from Cedarville University. The study was a blind study using experimental and sham treatment groups. The researcher used the Dynatron 709 Solaris unit with a superluminous diode cluster probe with wavelengths from 660 nm to 880 nm. The dosage was 10 J/cm² of continuous strength for 1 minute and 40 seconds at each injury site. The conclusion of this study was …

Illness Representation And Cardiac Rehabilitation Utilization Among Older Adults, Carrie N. Keib Jan 2007

Illness Representation And Cardiac Rehabilitation Utilization Among Older Adults, Carrie N. Keib

Faculty Dissertations

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number one cause of mortality and disability in the United States (U.S.). The burden of CHD disproportionately impacts the older adult population of the U.S. in relation to mortality, disability, and economic cost. Greater than 55% of acute myocardial infarction deaths and 86% of CHD deaths occur in adults who are 65 years of age or older. The estimated direct and indirect cost of CHD in the U.S. for 2007 is $151.6 billion. Research studies are needed to address the increasing burden of CHD among the older adult population.

The secondary prevention of CHD …

Perspectives Of School Nurse Vocational Satisfaction: A Qualitative Analysis, Shirley G. Smith Jan 2007

Perspectives Of School Nurse Vocational Satisfaction: A Qualitative Analysis, Shirley G. Smith

Master of Education Research Theses

This is a phenomenological, qualitative study of 25 school nurses employed in a large, urban school district in the Midwestern section of the United States. The study’s participants possess histories of professional work experiences in nursing specialties other than school nursing. Given the wide range of potential nursing opportunities currently available to registered nurses with baccalaureate degrees, participants’ responses regarding their selection of school nursing as a career, their past and present job satisfaction levels in school nursing, challenges, success definitions, and the integration of work with home life all bring clarity to the participants’ perspectives on this specialty of …
