Caring For Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Virtual Patient Instruction Improves Students' Knowledge And Comfort Level, Ida Slusher, Carla Sanders, Harold Kleinert, Teresa Free, Kim Clevenger, Stephanie Johnson, Sara Boyd

Ida Slusher

Nurses play a vital role in providing health care to children with developmental disability (DD) throughout the United States. Unfortunately, most nurses continue to report that they receive little or no clinical education in the area of DDs. In response to this need, a core development team consisting of nurse practitioners and nursing faculty from three universities, one physician assistant faculty, parents of children with DD, and educational specialists developed two multimedia (virtual patient) pediatric instructional modules in CD-ROM format—one involving a child with Down syndrome, and the other involving an infant born at 26 weeks' gestation. Participants were required …

Developing The Accredited Postgraduate Assessment Program For Fellowship Of The Australian College Of Rural And Remote Medicine, Janie Smith, David Prideaux, C Wolfe, T Wilkinson, Tarun Sengupta, D Dewitt, Paul Worley, Richard Hays, Marita Cowie

Janie Smith

Introduction: Accreditation of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) as a standards and training provider, by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) in 2007, is the first time in the world that a peak professional organisation for rural and remote medical education has been formally recognised. As a consequence, the Australian Government provided rural and remote medicine with formal recognition under Medicare as a generalist discipline. This accreditation was based on the ability of ACRRM to meet the AMC’s guidelines for its training and assessment program. Methods: The methodology was a six-step process that included: developing an assessment …

Age-Related Changes In Strength And Somato-Sensation During Mid-Life Support Rationale For Targeted Preventive Intervention Programs, Nancy Low Choy, Sandra Brauer, Jennifer Nitz Sep 2007

Age-Related Changes In Strength And Somato-Sensation During Mid-Life Support Rationale For Targeted Preventive Intervention Programs, Nancy Low Choy, Sandra Brauer, Jennifer Nitz

Nancy Low Choy

Age-related changes in strength and somatosensation have a negative impact on balance with advanced age. Knowledge of the decades of life when strength and somatosensation show initial and subsequent reductions could inform balance assessment and targeted preventive intervention. We report a cross-sectional study investigating strength and somatosensation of 316 healthy women aged 20–80 years. Demographics, health profile, and activity level were recorded. Strength of quadriceps, hip abductors and adductors, and lower limb somatosensation (tactile acuity, vibration threshold, and joint position error) were measured. Significant age-related changes in strength and somatosensory function were identified, even when demographic variables of activity level, …

Implementing Supportive Strategies To Retain Nurse Educators, Kathleen Halcomb, Amy Gregg, Bridget Roberts Jul 2007

Implementing Supportive Strategies To Retain Nurse Educators, Kathleen Halcomb, Amy Gregg, Bridget Roberts

Bridget R. Roberts

The nurse educator shortage directly affects the nursing shortage. To adequately prepare future nurses, academia needs to retain qualified nurse educators. Many factors affect the nurse educator shortage, including retirement and competition for qualified nursing educators with clinics and the privatesector, as well as dissatisfaction with the multiple stressors and expectations in the academic setting. Academia should implement supportive strategies to aid in the retention of nurse educators.

Shared Situational Awareness And Actionable Knowledge: Keeping The Human In The Loop, William Chris Chambers, Robert Ryczak, Chiehwen Ed Hsu, Bob Defraites Jul 2007

Shared Situational Awareness And Actionable Knowledge: Keeping The Human In The Loop, William Chris Chambers, Robert Ryczak, Chiehwen Ed Hsu, Bob Defraites

Chiehwen Ed Hsu

We propose a shift from a network-centric to a human-centric framework to assimilate emerging technologies into more effective and persistent situational awareness, integrated with actionable knowledge. Diverse communities of interest are better positioned to unify their efforts and support commanders when they are able to share situational awareness. A recent demonstration of military utility of a medical situational awareness capability for influenza surveillance validated shared situational awareness requirements in general. The current and future information environment will increase military and government requirements for situational awareness and actionable knowledge to support many “observe, assess, plan, and execute” processes by decision-makers. The …

Temporally Graded Activation Of Neocortical Regions In Response To Memories Of Different Ages, J Woodard, M Seidenberg, Kristy Nielson, S Miller, M Franczak, P Antuono, K Douville, S Rao Jun 2007

Temporally Graded Activation Of Neocortical Regions In Response To Memories Of Different Ages, J Woodard, M Seidenberg, Kristy Nielson, S Miller, M Franczak, P Antuono, K Douville, S Rao

Kristy Nielson

The temporally graded memory impairment seen in many neurobehavioral disorders implies different neuroanatomical pathways and/or cognitive mechanisms involved in storage and retrieval of memories of different ages. A dynamic interaction between medial-temporal and neocortical brain regions has been proposed to account for memory’s greater permanence with time. Despite considerable debate concerning its time-dependent role in memory retrieval, medial-temporal lobe activity has been well studied. However, the relative participation of neocortical regions in recent and remote memory retrieval has received much less attention. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrate robust, temporally graded signal differences in posterior cingulate, right middle frontal, …

Lake Mead, USA serves as an excellent field laboratory for studying a number of environmental processes, including the distribution and rate of sediment deposition, the bioavailability of anthropogenic contaminants in water and sediment columns, and the impact of naturally-occurring events such as fires and floods on lake ecosystems. Attempts at understanding this body of water, critical to the viability of over 20 million people, requires expertise and experience across a substantial number of disciplines. A research team comprised of representatives from academia and several federal agencies collected lakefloor side-scan sonar and seismic reflection measurements, along with sediment cores, in various …

Gene Expression Studies In Multiple Sclerosis, Lotti Tajouri, Francesca Fernandez, Lyn Griffiths

Bacterial alginate genes are chromosomal and fairly widespread among rRNA homology group I Pseudomonads and Azotobacter. In both genera, the genetic pathway of alginate biosynthesis is mostly similar and the identified genes are identically organized into biosynthetic, regulatory and genetic switching clusters. In spite of these similarities, still there are transcriptional and functional variations between P. aeruginosa and A. vinelandii. In P. aeruginosa all biosynthetic genes except algC transcribe in polycistronic manner under the control of algD promoter while in A. vinelandii, these are organized into many transcriptional units. Of these, algA and algC are transcribed each from two different …

Traditional pulmonary physiology teaches that moving from a supine to a partial Fowler’s position is an effective maneuver to increase functional residual capacity (FRC). This pilot study investigated whether a postural intervention improved FRC and the ratio of closing capacity (CC) to FRC in a sample of overweight and mildly to moderately obese persons. The study also evaluated whether, and to what extent, body mass and body fat distribution influenced these effects.

010-Clinical Tool For The Care Of The Obese Child In The Perioperative Period, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Nan Ground Mar 2007

010-Clinical Tool For The Care Of The Obese Child In The Perioperative Period, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Nan Ground

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that 30% of American children are overweight or obese, and an additional 30% of children are at high risk for becoming obese. Strategies that pediatric nurses can use to prepare themselves and their work environment for the perioperative care of these obese children and their families are needed. The nursing literature does not disclose whether or not pediatric nurses deliver perioperative care differently when they know their patient is obese. Therefore, this nursing research collaborative aimed at investigating the care delivered to these special children.
