Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Some biological characteristics and the stock size of the pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) population in Lake Karamık were investigated between March 2002 and February 2003. The percentages of males and females in the population were 67.2% and 32.8%, respectively. Although fish samples ranged in age group from I to VII and from 15 to 66 cm in fork length, most of them were in age groups I-II and had fork lengths of 20-29 cm. The mean condition factor of the pike population was 0.812. In the population, the condition factors of females were higher than those of males. The …

The sex distribution, growth in length and weight, growth rates and condition factors of Chub (Leuciscus cephalus (L., 1758)) in Karakaya dam lake were examined. Females made up 63.64% and males 36.37% (1.75:1) of 527 samples. The females and males were in the I-VI and I-V age groups, respectively. The reproductive properties of L. cephalus such as spawning period, age at attainment of maturity, egg diameter and ovarium weight were investigated. Student's t test showed that differences in length and weight between females and males of the same age groups were statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). The growth, both in length …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The biology of the tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucernus (Linnaeus, 1758), has been studied on data collected between November 1996 and November 1997 from the Sea of Marmara. Totally, 224 tub gurnards were sampled. The age, growth, length-weight relationship, condition factor, male to female ratio, first sexual maturity age, length and reproduction period were examined. The age composition of samples ranged between 1 and 6 years. Total length ranged between 12.3 and 41.5 cm, while weight varied from 15 to 617 g. The total length-weight relationship was estimated as W=0.0092L^{3.019}. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were: L_{\infity} = …

Estimates Of Maternal Effects For Pre- And Post- Weaning Daily Gain In Turkish Merino Lambs, Bülent Eki̇z

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aims of the study were to investigate the importance of maternal effects and to determine the most appropriate model of analyses for pre- and post-weaning daily gain of Turkish Merino lambs. Genetic parameters were estimated by REML procedure using DFREML program. Twelve different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal genetic effect, maternal permanent environmental effect, maternal temporary environmental effect and covariance between direct-maternal genetic effects. On the basis of log likelihood ratio test results, Model 2b, which included direct genetic and maternal temporary environmental effects, was determined to be the most appropriate model for both traits. …

The Growth And Survival Characteristics Of Holstein Female Calves Weaned At Various Ages, Ömür Koçak, Hali̇l Güneş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out at Kırklereli - Karacadağ Farm of Tikveşli Agricultural Company. It was aimed to investigate the growth and survival characteristics and the most cost-effective weaning age of Holstein female calves weaned at various ages. In the study, 100 female calves born single from Holstein heifers were used and they were divided randomly into five groups each having 20 calves. The calves were weaned at 28 (Group 28), 35 (Group 35), 42 (Group 42), 56 (Group 52) and 70 (Group 70) days of age. The live weights at 180^{th} day of age of calves in 28, 35, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 1096 spotted flounder (Citharus linguatula Linnaeus, 1758) were caught in Edremit Bay from September 1998 to September 2000. Length-weight relationships, age, growth, mortality and sex ratio of the samples were investigated. Within the population of this species, most of the individuals in our samples ranged from 100 to 160 mm (69.63%), the minimum and maximum total lengths of the specimens being 69 and 222 mm, respectively. Positive allometric growth was observed for male, female and all fish. Age distribution of the samples was from I to IV. There was no significant difference between observed and calculated (von …

Determination Of The Recruitment To Stock And Reproduction Period For Flounder (Platichthys Flesus Luscus Pallas, 1811) Along The Trabzon-Rize Coast, Eastern Black Sea, Erhan Çi̇loğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The length and weight distribution of flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus Pallas, 1811) were 14.2-34.1 cm and 28.879-611.0 g, respectively. The samples were distributed between the 0 and VII age groups. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for flounder were L_t = 41.241[1-e^{-0.161(t+3.240)}] for females, L_t= 33.567[1-e^{-0.181(t+3.525)}] for males and L_t = 40.577[1-e^{-0.142(t+3.105)}] for the sexes combined. Reproduction took place from December to March but peaked in December. Two recruitment periods were determined for flounder: the first was January to July, and the second August to November. The proportions of recruitment in the first and second periods were 68.13% and 31.87%, respectively.

Performance Testing Studies And The Selection Of Hasmer, Hasak, Hasiv And Linmer Crossbreed Sheep Types: Ii. Pre-Weaning Growth, Mehmet Emi̇n Teki̇n, Mehmet Gürkan, Osman Karabulut, Hüseyi̇n Düzgün

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to investigate the pre-weaning growth of crossbreed types. Fifteen genotypes (F_1 and B_1) were obtained by crossbreeding in the Animal Research Institute in Konya from 1989 to 1996. These 15 genotypes were classified in 4 appropriate genotype names: Hasmer, Hasak, Hasiv and Linmer. GLM and Tukey's HSD tests were used for statistical analyses. Year, genotype, sex, birth type, and dam's age were introduced into the model as fixed factors and birth weight was introduced as a covariate along with year x genotype interaction. While the effects of year, dam's age, birth type, and sex on birth …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of early age mating on reproductive traits and survival rate and lamb growth of Bafra sheep. The animals used in the study were divided into two groups (Group I and Group II) according to age of animals. The animals in Group I, 344 ewe lambs, were about 10 months of age, while the animals in Group II, 174 yearlings, were about 18 months of age. The same feeding and management conditions were practised for both groups during mating season and pregnancy and lactation periods. The pre-mating live weights were 43.53 …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of 4 different experimental photoperiod regimes, LDN (natural photoperiod), LD24:0 (24 h light:0 h dark), LD12:12 (12 h light:12 h dark) and LD0:24 (0 h light:24 h dark), on feed intake and growth parameters of juvenile turbot (21 ± 2.3 g) in the Black Sea were determined. Growth was highest in the group exposed to the continuous photoperiod (LD24:0), followed by the LD12:12, LDN and LD0:24 groups in descending order. The lowest growth rate was recorded in the LD0:24 group. According to the results obtained, LD24:0 and LD12:12 photoperiod exposures are best for better growth and food conversion …
