Effect Of Season On Some Fertility Parameters Of Dairy And Beef Cows In Elazığ Province, Mustafa Sönmez, Eşref Demi̇rci̇, Gaffari̇ Türk, Seyfetti̇n Gür

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of seasons on some fertility parameters of dairy and beef cows in Elazığ province. A total of 511 multiparous dairy and beef cows in four commercial herds were used as material in the study. Climatic data were obtained from reports prepared at the Department of Meteorology in Elazığ. Daily maximum, minimum and average ambient temperatures and relative humidity were recorded throughout the year. Estruses were detected by observation twice a day. The expression of overt estrus was evaluated observing the degrees of signs of estrus. Cows were inseminated artificially after about 12 …

Chorionic Villus Sampling (Cvs) In Cows, Fulya Tekşen, Mustafa Kaymaz, Okan Ertuğrul Jan 2005

Chorionic Villus Sampling (Cvs) In Cows, Fulya Tekşen, Mustafa Kaymaz, Okan Ertuğrul

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Eleven slaughtered Holstein and 11 slaughtered Holstein x Anatolian black pregnant cows (10 female, 12 male fetuses) were studied. Gestational ages of the cattle ranged from 67 days to 245 days. The average ages for the first trimester and second trimester were 79.58 ± 3.04 and 113.89 ± 4.08 days, respectively. In this first attempt, 3 cultures failed and no metaphase could be obtained. In the rest of the cases 9 females with 60 XX and 10 males with 60 XY were obtained. In addition to normal metaphase plates, a high incidence of tetraploid plates belonging to normal fetus phenotypes …

Liver Function In Cows With Retained Placenta, Ahmet Semacan, Mutlu Sevi̇nç Jan 2005

Liver Function In Cows With Retained Placenta, Ahmet Semacan, Mutlu Sevi̇nç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was to compare the liver function of cows with retained placenta (n = 21) with that of control post-partum cows (n = 12). Liver biopsies of the cows with retained placenta showed that the mean percentage of fat in the liver parenchyma was 32.5%. The serum glucose, albumin, cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), total calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels of cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those of control cows whereas the aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) serum concentrations of cows with retained placenta were …

The Relationship Between Lameness, Fertility And Aflatoxin In A Dairy Cattle Herd, Serhat Özsoy, Kemal Altunatmaz, Huri̇ye Horoz Kaya, Güven Kaşikçi, Serhat Alkan, Tanay Bi̇lal Jan 2005

The Relationship Between Lameness, Fertility And Aflatoxin In A Dairy Cattle Herd, Serhat Özsoy, Kemal Altunatmaz, Huri̇ye Horoz Kaya, Güven Kaşikçi, Serhat Alkan, Tanay Bi̇lal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the relationship between aflatoxins taken with feed, laminitis, lameness and impaired fertility. Lesions were identified in the claw and hock region, causing lameness in 45 cattle in an establishment of 300 Holstein dairy cattle. Of these lame cattle, 27 had cystic ovaries and 10 had cystic ovaries together with clinical metritis. The increase in lameness and fertility problems occurring in this herd, living under the same management and feeding conditions, was determined to start with the change in feed concentrates and, in order to investigate the relationship with mycotoxins, Aflatoxin B_1 (AFB_{1}) analysis …

Concentrations Of Some Minerals In Cows With Retained Placenta And Abortion, Yaşar Akar, Hami̇t Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood levels of Ca, Zn, Mg, K, and Na and the occurrence of retained placenta and abortion in cows. Serum samples from 34 cows were analyzed (18 with retained placenta, 10 without retained placenta (control), and 6 that had aborted). Ca and Zn levels in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those in the control group. The serum Zn levels of aborted cows were higher (P < 0.001) than those of cows with retained placenta. Cows in the control group and those with retained placenta were divided into subgroups based on age (3, 4-6, 7-9 years old), type of parturition (normal, dystocia), and sex of calves (male, female). The serum Ca concentration of 3-year-old cows with retained placenta was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of those 7-9 years old. It is concluded that lower serum Ca and Zn levels in cows may induce placenta retention.
