Providing Education And Support For Rural Palliative Care Nurses In Western Australia: An Intervention Study, Ruth Mcconigley Jan 2004

Providing Education And Support For Rural Palliative Care Nurses In Western Australia: An Intervention Study, Ruth Mcconigley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Rural palliative care nurses (RPCNs) in Western Australia (WA) are a small population, who have embraced the specialist palliative care role since the first palliative care service in rural WA began in 1990. However, there are some challenges involved with being a specialist nurse in a generalist health care setting. fu particular, there is a suggestion in the literature that RPCNs may be professionally isolated, may be prone to burnout, and may therefore experience decreased job satisfaction and may consider leaving the palliative care field.

Identifying And Enabling Core Management Competencies And Compliance Factors In High Reliability Organisations : A Study In Organisational Risk Management Psychology And Training: A Small N Modified Grounded Theory Qualitative Analysis, Patrick S. Maher

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

High reliability entities governed by statutory regulations are required to comply with safety guidelines and specifications. When fatalities or serious injuries occur in otherwise preventable accidents these entities are routinely exonerated from any responsibility by claiming to have ‘systemic management problems’ and their managing coalitions have been able to hide behind the ‘corporate veil’. This thesis maintains that the core managerial competencies needed to prevent preventable accidents, can be acquired through training, particularly if their mastery is mandated by a strong regulatory and compliance regime. The cases chosen for analysis revealed ten core managerial and organisational competencies and compliance as …

The Effects Of A Heavy Resistance Training Intervention Of The Plantar Flexors On The Recovery Of Strength, Power, Acceleration, And Agility In Recreational Athletes, Naomi A. Forrest

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Resistance training is a highly utilised form of exercise that is used to develop strength, power, speed and muscular endurance. Although it is associated with many positive benefits it also has some potentially unfavourable effects. These are manifested in the form of altered muscle function through the effects of muscle fatigue and exercise induced muscle damage. Various aspects muscle fatigue and damage have been well studied, however research into the effects of these on tests of strength, power, acceleration and agility is sparse. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a heavy resistance intervention on …

Molecular Defects In The Β-Globin Gene Identified In Different Ethnic Groups/Populations During Prenatal Diagnosis For Β-Thalassemia: A Malaysian Experience, Maryanne Tan

Mary Anne Tan Jin Ai

β-thalassemia is the most-common genetic disorder of hemoglobin synthesis in Malaysia, and about 4.5% of the population are heterozygous carriers of the disorder. Prenatal diagnosis was performed for 96 couples using the Amplification Refractory Mutation System and Gap- Polymerase Chain Reaction. We identified 17 β-globin defects-initiation codon for translation (T-G), -29 (A-G), - 28 (A-G), CAP +1 (A-C), CD 8/9 (+G), CD 15 (G-A), CD 17 (A-T), CD 19 (A-G), Hb E (G-A), IVS1-1 (G-T), IVS1- 5 (G-C), CD 41/42 (-CTTT), CD 71–72 (+A), IVS2-654 (CT), poly A(A-G), 100-kb Gγ(Aγδβ)° and 45-kb Filipino deletions. The 192 β-alleles studied comprised Chinese …

Richard J Fehring

The purpose of this study was to compare the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle as determined by the Clearplan Easy Fertility Monitor (CPEFM) with self-monitoring of cervical mucus. One-hundred women (mean age = 29.4 years) observed their cervical mucus and monitored their urine for estrogen and luteinizing hormone metabolites with the CPEFM on a daily basis for 2-6 cycles and generated 378 cycles of data; of these, 347 (92%) had a CPEFM peak. The beginning of the fertile window was, on average, day 11.8 (SD = 3.4) by the monitor and day 9.9 (SD = 3.0) by cervical mucus …

A Systematic Review Of The Diagnostic Accuracy Of Natriuretic Peptides For Heart Failure, Jenny Doust, Paul Glasziou, Eva Pietrzak, Annette Dobson Dec 2003

A Systematic Review Of The Diagnostic Accuracy Of Natriuretic Peptides For Heart Failure, Jenny Doust, Paul Glasziou, Eva Pietrzak, Annette Dobson

Jenny Doust

Background The diagnosis of heart failure is difficult, with both overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis occurring commonly in practice. Natriuretic peptides have been proposed as a possible test for assisting diagnosis. We assessed the diagnostic accuracy of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), including a comparison with atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Methods Electronic searches were conducted of MEDLINE and EMBASE from January 1994 to December 2002 and handsearches of reference lists of included studies. We included studies that assessed the diagnostic accuracy of BNP against echocardiographic or clinical criteria or that compared the diagnostic accuracy of BNP with ANP. Two reviewers assessed studies for …

Advance Care Planning And End Of Life Decision Making, Colleen Cartwright, Malcolm Parker Dec 2003

Advance Care Planning And End Of Life Decision Making, Colleen Cartwright, Malcolm Parker

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

BACKGROUND Aging populations with greater rates of cognitive decline demand increased attention to the issues of end of life decision making and advance care planning (ACP). Legislatures have passed statutes that recognise the necessity for both substitute decision making and the declaration in advance of wishes relating to health care. OBJECTIVE This article discusses ACP and the role of the general practitioner. DISCUSSION Advance care planning provides patients, relatives and doctors with greater confidence about the future. There is good evidence that patients desire to discuss end of life care, and GPs are in a good position to engage their …
