The United States has the world’s most expensive healthcare system. In 2002, health spending rose to nearly 15 percent of U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Healthcare policymakers charged with balancing cost containment with quality healthcare for consumers are desperate for solutions (Levit, Smith, Cowan, Sensenig, and Catlin, 2004).

The demography of the United States is rapidly changing. The impressive growth rate of Latino populations within the United States has great impact on health care. This article includes discussion of a significant increase from 1988 to 2000 in Latino utilization of emergency department and inpatient services at a pediatric medical center in Salt Lake City, Utah, information on health care barriers for Latinos, and suggestions for providing culturally competent care.

What Specific Characteristics Influence Patients To Receive Their Health Care From A Physician Assistant?, Christine L. Rogers

Background. This research investigated patient satisfaction with physician assistants in a primary health care. The literature reviewed concluded high patient satisfaction ratings resulted because of the clinicians strong interpersonal skills, easy accessibility, adequate time was spent, were good listeners, explained medical issues well, and were courteous and respectful. The study looked at what specific characteristics influenced high patient satisfaction ratings with physician assistants. It also looked at the top three characteristics that were important to the patient and whether the patient would see the PA again. Methods. As many as one of every five Americans has a disability or chronic health condition. In rural areas, that proportion (23%) is even higher. As the U.S. population ages, the numbers of people with disability and chronic conditions will predictably increase, which accounts for a growing national interest in the health and wellness of individuals with disabilities. While composing about 20% of the population, individuals with disabilities account for nearly half of all medical expenditures.

Access to health is an often-overlooked aspect of the right to health. Without practical access, the right to health becomes an empty promise. International human rights conventions and declarations do not directly mention access to health, but the above comment on the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights does address the issue.
