An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman Jan 2004

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman

Theses : Honours

It is known that sustained muscular contractions can cause muscular pain, which explains the prevalence of neck pain of employees in static and semi-static work such as dentistry, sewing machine and computer operation. Additionally, exposure to high and sustained gravitational forces in high performance combat pilots is another source of neck pain in the workplace. Individuals with neck pain have been found to show decreased neck strength, in particular neck flexor strength has been found to be less than that of the general population. It has been suggested that neck-conditioning exercises may be useful in the prevention and rehabilitation of …

What Is The Impact Of Tram Flap Breast Reconstruction On Self-Esteem And Perceived Body Image For Women With Breast Cancer?, Olivia Hill Jan 2004

What Is The Impact Of Tram Flap Breast Reconstruction On Self-Esteem And Perceived Body Image For Women With Breast Cancer?, Olivia Hill

Theses : Honours

Breast cancer is the most common of all cancers in women (26%) in Australia (Australian Institute Health Welfare AIHW, 1996; National Breast Cancer Centre NBCC, 1999). It is estimated that the lifetime incidence of one in eleven women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of seventy-four (National Health and Medical Research Council NHMRC, 2000). Surgical resection continues to be the mainstay of treatment for early breast cancer, with approximately 50% of women diagnosed with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy (NBCC, 1999). Both the diagnosis of breast cancer and subsequent mastectomy raises a number of psychosocial issues …

Analysis Of Expression Patterns Of Scl And Pax7 In The Mouse Brain For Potential Concomitant Function Within The Mesencephalon, Julie Stampalia Jan 2004

Analysis Of Expression Patterns Of Scl And Pax7 In The Mouse Brain For Potential Concomitant Function Within The Mesencephalon, Julie Stampalia

Theses : Honours

Investigation of the cascade of events that leads to brain formation during embryogenesis allows an understanding of the processes involved that may well be applicable to future neurodegenerative therapies. Two genes at work during embryonic neurogenesis in a brain region called the superior colliculus are Scl, a member of the basic helix-loop-helix factor transcription factor family and Pax7, a paired box transcription factor containing a homeobox dornain. The superior coiliculus forms part of the visual system in mammals and in sepmate studies both the Scl and Pax7 genes have been shown to be present in this region of the mouse …

Examination Of Multiple Fatigue Models During Prolonged Cycling In Hot Versus Cold Climates, Chris Abbiss Jan 2004

Examination Of Multiple Fatigue Models During Prolonged Cycling In Hot Versus Cold Climates, Chris Abbiss

Theses : Honours

Much of the previous research into understanding fatigue during prolonged cycling has found that endurance performance may be limited by numerous physiological, biomechanical, environmental, mechanical, and psychological factors. From the literature presently available, fatigue would appear to be task- and condition- specific. Studies demonstrating this, however, are limited. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, was to examine variables from multiple fatigue models concurrently to determine which variables were best related to fatigue during prolonged endurance exercise in hot versus cold conditions. Following a 100-km familiarization time trial (22°C) , nine endurance trained male cyclists ( VO2max = 62.1 ± …

Deep Muscle Function In The Cervical Spine: Application To Musculoskeletal Modelling, Jonathon Green Jan 2004

Deep Muscle Function In The Cervical Spine: Application To Musculoskeletal Modelling, Jonathon Green

Theses : Honours

Neck pain in occupational tasks is a problem that involves a high cost to society therefore, understanding the mechanics of musculoskeletal loading is important in formulating preventative rehabilitation strategies. Musculoskeletal modelling of the neck provides a means by which to calculate loads on the components and muscles of the neck thus allowing quantitative data to be gained non-invasivcly for a wide range of occupational tasks. Anatomically detailed, electromyography (EMG) driven neck models require deep muscle EMG activation profiles which arc difficult to attain without invasive EMG procedures. The aim of this study was to determine whether EMG activity of semispinalis …

Perceptions Of Psychological Injury In The Workplace, Richard Merrett Jan 2004

Perceptions Of Psychological Injury In The Workplace, Richard Merrett

Theses : Honours

Work-related psychological injury has not only increased as a percentage of all injuries but also accounts for the greatest cost, both in duration of lost time and financially (National Occupational Health & Safety Commission [NOHSC], 2001; NOHSC, 2002). There are two major explanations as to why this might be. One explanation is that stigmatisation of psychological injury has reduced, resulting in increased reporting (Manton, 2004). The other major explanation is that workplaces are becoming more stressful environments, resulting in increased levels of psychological injury to employees (Kenny & Cooper, 2003). This review will investigate those potentially influential factors that relate …

Substance Using Women : The Social Meaning Of Substance Use For Using Women And The Negotiation Of Identities, H. Suzanne Mackeith Jan 2004

Substance Using Women : The Social Meaning Of Substance Use For Using Women And The Negotiation Of Identities, H. Suzanne Mackeith

Theses : Honours

This thesis is framed as an inquiry into the attitudes and experiences of women to their use of psychoactive substances and the contribution that use makes to their construction of gendered identities and meanings they derive from their use. The thesis also explores how these meanings relate to, and contrast or concur with, wider social attitudes relating to ‘feminine’ identity, issues of resistance and control, self control, happiness, independence and dependence, social roles and relationships, risk-taking and safety. The thesis aims to contribute to feminist understandings concerning substance use and to add a feminist interpretative voice to the alcohol, tobacco …
