School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prophylactic near-infrared light therapy from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients.

Background Data: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent side effect of chemotherapy that leads to increased morbidity. Near-infrared light has been shown to produce biostimulatory effects in tissues, and previous results using near-infrared lasers have shown improvement in OM indices. However, LEDs may hold greater potential for clinical applications.

Materials and Methods: We recruited 32 consecutive pediatric patients undergoing myeloablative therapy in preparation for BMT. Patients were examined by two …

Effects Of Occupational Ultrasonic Noise Exposure On Hearing Of Dental Hygienists: A Pilot Study, Jennifer Dunning Wilson, Michele Leonardi Darby, Susan L. Tolle, Joseph C. Sever Jr. Oct 2002

Effects Of Occupational Ultrasonic Noise Exposure On Hearing Of Dental Hygienists: A Pilot Study, Jennifer Dunning Wilson, Michele Leonardi Darby, Susan L. Tolle, Joseph C. Sever Jr.

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Purpose. The purpose of this case-control study was to determine whether long-term ultrasonic noise exposure via the dental office environment is related to dental hygienists' hearing status.

Methods. Registered dental hygienists (N - 698) who live in the Hampon Roads areas of Virginia were mailed a Dental Hygiene Word History Questionnaire to determine who would meet the inclusion criteria and would be willing to participate in the study. Consenting subjects were categorized into one of two groups, according to ultrasonic sealer usage rate, and matched on age. Persons with known hearing loss due to infection, disease, or congenital defect were …

Median cleft of the lower lip and associated structures is a relatively rare condition. We report the case of a patient with mandibular cleft. Unlike other reported cases of similar disorders, there was no cleft of the lower lip. The literature on median clefts of the lower lip and mandible is reviewed, and the etiology and treatment are discussed.

Enhanced Gene Delivery In Vitro And In Vivo By Improved Transferrin-Lipoplexes, Conchita Tros De Ilarduya, M. A. Arangoa, M. J. Moreno-Aliaga, Nejat Düzgüneş

Cationic liposomes and the complexes they form with DNA (lipoplexes) constitute the most promising alternative to the use of viral vectors for gene therapy. One of the limitations to their application in vivo, however, is the inhibition of gene delivery by serum. In a previous study, we demonstrated that transferrin (Tf)-lipoplexes were superior to plain lipoplexes in transfecting HeLa cells in the presence of high concentrations of serum. With the goal of obtaining efficient gene expression in vivo, we evaluated the efficacy of Tf-lipoplexes (containing DOTAP and cholesterol) in transfecting primary hepatocytes and adipocytes in the presence of high serum …

Fluorescent Probes For Monitoring Virus Fusion Kinetics: Comparative Evaluation Of Reliability, Isabel Nunes-Correia, Ana Eulálio, Shlomo Nir, Nejat Düzgüneş, João Ramalho-Santos, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Fluorescence assays for viral membrane fusion employ lipidic probes whose kinetics of fluorescence dequenching should mimic the actual kinetics of membrane merging. We examined the fusion of influenza virus with CEM cells, erythrocyte ghosts or liposomes by monitoring the fluorescence dequenching of each one of the three probes, octadecylrhodamine B chloride (R18), N-(lissamine rhodamine B sulfonyl)phosphatidylethanolamine (Rh-PE), or rac-2,3-dioleoylglycerol ester of rhodamine B (DORh-B), inserted into the virus membrane. Experimental conditions were designed to allow a clear distinction between membrane mixing and non-specific probe transfer. Fluorescence dequenching observed with Rh-PE was much slower than with R18, unless a particular experimental …

Current Status Of Defensins And Their Role In Innate And Adaptive Immunity, Periathamby A. Raj, Andrew R. Dentino

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Naturally occurring antimicrobial cationic polypeptides play a major role in innate and adaptive immunity. These polypeptides are found to be either linear and unstructured or structured through disulfide bonds. Among the structured antimicrobial polypeptides, defensins comprise a family of cysteine-rich cationic polypeptides that contribute significantly to host defense against the invasion of microorganisms in animals, humans, insects and plants. Their wide-spread occurrence in various tissues of these diverse organisms, and their importance in innate and adaptive immunity have led to their identification, isolation and characterization. A large volume of literature is available on defensins’ occurrence, structural characterization, gene expression and …
