Biological damage mediated by reactive oxygen species has been increasingly recognized in aging phenomena in recent decades. The increase in catecholamine metabolism is yet another physiological change in aging, predisposing the organism to supranormal hydrogen peroxide produc-tion as a by-product. This study was undertaken to investigate the alterations in oxidant- antioxidant status in rat cardiac tissue during aging. The effects of acute administration of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors on this status were also investigated to find possible preventive strategies in conjugate aging. MAO activities, malondialdehyde MDA and diene conjugate levels as well as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were determined …

We tested the effects of moderate physical exercise on the blood antioxidant capacity and erythrocyte lipid peroxidation in 21 Wistar albino rats. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased significantly (p

It is known that erythrocyte aggregation in renal tissue during preserva-tion is cause of microcirculation defects in the reperfusion period. The aim of our study is to investigate oxidative damage in erythrocytes relative to the time of cold ischemia during organ preservation and relationship between lipid peroxidation and development of these damages. In experiments with a rabbit model, explanted kidneys were exposed to perfusion and 96 hours preservation with Euro-Collins (EC) in the 1st group, and University of Wisconsin (UW) solution in the 2nd group. Electron-microscopic examinations in renal tissueswere performed. Lipid peroxidation and glutathione levels in erythrocytes preserved in …

Recent few studies revealed that increased levels of oxygen free radicals might play a role in tissue damage. There are some studies in the literature proposing that increased levels of oxygen radicals might play a role in tissue damage, as also seen in Behçet's disease (BD). The aim of the present study was to measure plasma malondialde-hyde (MDA) (as an index of lipid peroxida-tion) levels in 23 patients with BD (13 men, 10 women with a mean age of 34.5 ± .2 years) both in active and in remission periods. Twenty-one healthy volunteers (11 men, 10 women) formed as the …
