Footwear Selection, Foot Type, And Running Biomechanics Of Male Distance Runners With Previous Running Related Injury: A Case Series, Diego Castro I. Diaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the rise in popularity of running, running shoe companies have researched and designed several models aimed at the purpose of providing comfort and aiding in the decrease of running related injuries. Technology was developed for running shoes to control forefoot and rearfoot impact forces and rearfoot motion during running. However, there is no overwhelming evidence supporting the notion that footwear corresponding to foot type leads to a decrease in running injuries. Thus, the purpose of this study was to describe footwear selection, foot type, and running biomechanics in previously injured male distance runners. Six total participants completed this case …

The Relationship Between Gluteus Maximus Activation And Running Economy In Recreational Distance Runners, Carlos Hernandez Jan 2023

PURPOSE: The utilization of hydrogel technology allows carbohydrate beverages to form a gel in the acidic environment of the stomach, potentially enhancing gastric emptying. However, few studies have researched the effects of these beverages on gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance and exercise performance; there is minimal data in a variety of exercise conditions and/or beverage ingestion rates. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of a 80 g/h of maltodextrin-fructose hydrogel (MF-H) beverage versus conventional carbohydrate sources on GI symptoms and running performance. METHODS: eight distance runners (26 ± 5 y; VO2max = 65 ± 7 ml/kg/min) …

Pacing Variability And Performance In A 100 Mile Ultra Marathon, Brendan Gilpatrick Dec 2021

Pacing Variability And Performance In A 100 Mile Ultra Marathon, Brendan Gilpatrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between pacing variability and performance during a 100 mile trail race with significant changes in elevation. Changes in pace throughout an endurance event of this length could lead to insight into the relationship of early pacing on overall performance and placing among finishers. Due to variables like changes in terrain or weather it could prove difficult to construct a way to analyze data from these races. Race data from a loop style course with significant elevation change was used to determine if 1). There were significant changes in pace per …

The Effect Of Biomechanical Variables On Injury Rates: A Literature Review, Nicholas Stricklen Jan 2020

The Effect Of Biomechanical Variables On Injury Rates: A Literature Review, Nicholas Stricklen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Long distance running has become a highly-participated activity throughout the world, allowing individuals to reap the health benefits and become physically fit. The issue with endurance running, or long distance running, is that an overuse in the lower extremities often results in injuries in the leg, foot, ankle, or hip. Often, these lower extremity injuries are not caused by overuse, but rather, an issue with biomechanics. The purpose of this literature review is to study three biomechanical variables and how they relate to injuries. Cadence, foot strike pattern, and vertical oscillation are biomechanical variables that contribute to injury rates. Most …

The Role Of Movement Pattern In Relation To Running Related Injuries Risk Factors, Marwan Mahmoud A Aljohani Jul 2019

The Role Of Movement Pattern In Relation To Running Related Injuries Risk Factors, Marwan Mahmoud A Aljohani

Dissertations (1934 -)

About 52.3 million American run on a regular basis. Up to 79% of runners get injured every year and the rate of injury has not declined over the past decades. Females have twice the risk of developing a running related injury (RRI). Rate of loading (ROL), tibial impact shock (TIS), and low movement variability may contribute to the development of RRI. Not much is known, however, about the relationships between impact kinetics (i.e. ROL, TIS) and movement variability. In addition, there is a lack of understanding about the effects of sex and speed on the aforementioned RRI risk factors. Therefore, …

The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Highly Cushioned Shoes On Loading Characteristics In Recreational Runners, Jessica Corkin Aug 2017

The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Highly Cushioned Shoes On Loading Characteristics In Recreational Runners, Jessica Corkin

All NMU Master's Theses

Recently, highly cushioned shoes (HCS) entered the running market, and manufacturers suggested extra cushioning potentially reduced injury rates through superior shock absorption, implying less impact upon foot strike versus other shoes. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-week HCS intervention on running-related impact forces in adult recreational runners. We hypothesized HCS would result in altered force attenuation compared to standard cushioned shoes (SCS) at baseline. After 4-weeks, we speculated differences would not be attenuated. Twenty-nine healthy runners (18-60 yrs of age) who had never worn HCS were randomized to either an intervention (INV) …

Can Simple Postural Instructions Modify Running Forms In Recreational Runners, Casey Gray, Matthew Poggemiller, Ian Tracy May 2017

Can Simple Postural Instructions Modify Running Forms In Recreational Runners, Casey Gray, Matthew Poggemiller, Ian Tracy

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Purpose/Hypothesis: Recent research suggests that alteration of trunk angle and foot strike pattern during running may result in beneficial changes that prevent running related injuries due to reduction in vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF). For example, running form emphasizing a forward trunk lean and a midfoot or forefoot strike pattern has been shown to be effective in reducing knee stress and the risks of other impact-related running injuries. In clinical practice however, it is currently unknown if simple postural cues given to runners can elicit motor learning that leads to modification of running form. The purpose of this study was …

Altering A Runner’S Foot Strike Using A Modified Elliptical Trainer, Daniel Shull Jan 2017

Altering A Runner’S Foot Strike Using A Modified Elliptical Trainer, Daniel Shull

Theses and Dissertations

One possible solution to common running related injuries is to transition runners from a rearfoot strike during initial contact to a midfoot strike. Natural rearfoot strike runners were studied to see if a modified elliptical trainer could be used to alter their running pattern to that of a midfoot strike runner. Their results were compared to subjects who ran on a non-modified elliptical trainer. After training on the modified elliptical trainer, subjects demonstrated a decrease in foot angle at initial contact when attempting to run with a midfoot strike. Training did not affect all kinetic metrics or stride frequency. However, …

The Effects Of A Hip Flexor Stretching Program On Running Kinematics In Individuals With Limited Passive Hip Extension, Jeff H. Mettler Jan 2016

The Effects Of A Hip Flexor Stretching Program On Running Kinematics In Individuals With Limited Passive Hip Extension, Jeff H. Mettler

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

INTRODUCTION: Tightness of the hip flexor muscle group may contribute to altered sagittal plane kinematics of the lumbo-pelvic-hip (LPH) complex during dynamic movements. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of a three-week home-based stretching program on passive hip extension (PHE), as well as on active hip extension (AHE), anterior pelvic tilt (APT), and lumbar spine extension (LSE) when running. METHODS: Twenty healthy subjects with limited PHE underwent a 3D gait analysis both prior (PRE) and following (POST) a three-week static hip flexor stretching program. RESULTS: Following the stretching program, peak PHE increased significantly (P < 0.001), while no significant improvements were reported in AHE, APT, or LSE. In addition, no relationship was found between the change in PHE with either the change in AHE, APT, or LSE. Finally, a high relationship was observed between AHE and APT during running (r = 0.83, p < 0.001), and low relationships were observed between APT and LSE (r = -0.41, p = 0.08) and AHE and LSE (r = -0.34, p = 0.15). CONCLUSION: A three-week static stretching program of the hip flexor musculature resulted in an increase in PHE, but the sagittal plane kinematics of the LPH complex during running remained unchanged. The correlations observed between AHE, APT, and LSE suggest there is a kinematic relationship between the hip, pelvis, and spine.
