The Impact Of Health Insurance Coverage On Short-Term And Long-Term Readmissions To The Emergency Department For Pediatric Patients With Asthma: A Retrospective Regression Analysis, Micheline Plantada Mar 2024

The Impact Of Health Insurance Coverage On Short-Term And Long-Term Readmissions To The Emergency Department For Pediatric Patients With Asthma: A Retrospective Regression Analysis, Micheline Plantada

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Inadequate health insurance coverage may hinder the management of asthma in children in recurrent emergency department (ED) visits in comparison to children with health care insurance. Children with asthma who do not have health insurance are at risk of not having access to primary care physicians. They may live in poorer communities, where they are more likely to encounter higher concentrations of asthma-inducing agents or factors contributing to increased healthcare utilization, resulting in increased expenditures and reduced patient outcomes.

Sociodemographic Factors And The Risk Of Paediatric Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Samina Idrees Jun 2023

Sociodemographic Factors And The Risk Of Paediatric Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Samina Idrees

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (POHCA) is associated with poor survival and severe neurological sequelae. This thesis aims to explore the relationship between sociodemographic factors and POHCA. The findings from our systematic review indicate that there are racial disparities in POHCA risk and in the provision of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There was little evidence of sociodemographic disparities in bystander defibrillation, survival and neurological outcome, particularly across adjusted analyses. The findings from our case-control study in Ontario, Canada, indicate that children living in marginalized areas have an elevated risk of experiencing POHCA. We also found that children living in northern urban or …

The Experiences Of Clinical Placement Belonging Among Nursing Students With Racially And Ethnically Minoritized Identities: An Interpretive Descriptive Study, Connor J. Gould

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Abstract

Background: Within clinical learning environments, a students’ sense of belonging has been identified as a pre-requisite for effective learning. Unfortunately, many aspects of nursing education act as barriers to belongingness among students with racially and ethnically minoritized identities. Although prejudice and discrimination represent barriers to belongingness, there is a paucity of literature exploring how racially and ethnically minoritized nursing students experience belonging during their clinical placements.

Aim: To explore how nursing students with racially and ethnically minoritized identities experience a sense of belonging during their clinical placements.

Research Design: The researcher followed an interpretive descriptive design informed by intersectional …

“Nope. Don’T Like That.” In Search Of Justice And Commitment To Nonmaleficence In Dance/Movement Therapy, Johnee Border

Dance/Movement Therapy Theses

The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) and Dance/Movement Therapy Certification Board (DMTCB) have ensured those dance/movement therapists who have been educated, registered, and board-certified share a commitment to equity, justice, and nonmaleficence according to the ADTA and DMTCB’s Code of Ethics and Standards (The Code) (ADTA, 2015). “Nope. Don’t like that,” has been the actual, verbal, expression of the embodied experience of intersectional harm from a lack of assessed, decolonized dance/movement therapy practice and pedagogy. The ADTA, students, educators, and credentialed dance/movement therapists hold an established, ethical responsibility to justice and nonmaleficence, and as such, must demonstrate a commitment to …

Race, Gender, Physical Activity, And Cancer: A Quantitative Investigation, Shawna A. Townsend Feb 2023

Race, Gender, Physical Activity, And Cancer: A Quantitative Investigation, Shawna A. Townsend

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Black women are more likely to die from cancer than any other population in the United States. Physical activity is known to be associated with preventing and reducing cancer burden. However, Black women are less physically active than their White counterparts and have a higher prevalence of diseases related to lack of physical activity than any other female group. To better understand these issues, this study employed the self-and-family management framework and intersectionality as theoretical frameworks through a secondary analysis of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) dataset and hierarchical regression modeling to examine the relative impact of (a.) …

Implications Of Race On Post-Concussion Neurocognitive Performance And Symptom Presentation, Taia B.B. Maceachern

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The objective of this thesis was to examine the impact of race on post-concussion symptoms and neurocognitive performance. This was achieved through a systematic review and meta-analysis (Chapter 2), and a retrospective study (Chapter 3). From 15 published studies, it was found that Whites (70.11%) reported a higher prevalence of concussion then Black/African American (13.65%). A small effect (g = 0.3) of race was found on neurocognitive measures, indicating that Whites performed better. Using a database of concussion outcomes, it was found that Black/African American reported significantly higher symptom severities (p <0.05), but this was dependent on the …

Double Consciousness And Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors In Young Black And White Adults, Priscillia Ihionkhan Apr 2022

Double Consciousness And Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors In Young Black And White Adults, Priscillia Ihionkhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the previously understudied notion that Black individuals are buffered against being dissatisfied with their bodies and in turn developing unhealthy eating and weight control behaviors. Double consciousness, a racially/ethnically sensitive measure of body dissatisfaction, was tested as a mediator of the relation between ethnic identity and unhealthy eating and weight control behaviors in Black and White adults. It was anticipated that unhealthy weight control behaviors would be more common in Black women compared to White women and that double consciousness would mediate the association between ethnic identity and unhealthy weight control behaviors among Black women, but …

Birth Outcomes For Hispanic Women In South Carolina, Reilly Leaver Apr 2022

Birth Outcomes For Hispanic Women In South Carolina, Reilly Leaver

Senior Theses

The United States maintains disproportionately high infant mortality rates compared to other developed countries globally (Arima et al., 2009). High barriers to accessing affordable reproductive health care are key drivers behind this phenomenon, with minority ethnic and racial populations in the Deep South region of the United States facing these barriers at much higher rates than their white counterparts (Davis et al., 2020). Factors such as low levels of education, low use of private health insurance, and low participation in prenatal care generally correlate with adverse birth outcomes. Both Hispanic and Black mothers experience these factors at similarly low levels, …

Racial Identity, Hair Esteem, Hair Texture, And Hairstyle Choice As Correlates Of Psychological Well-Being Among Afro-Latinas In The United States, Marielsy Esther Pimentel

Dissertations

Problem

During the Colonial period, hair was one of the designated phenotypic markers of racial group membership used to assign or deny privilege. Privileges are still assigned to people based on their racial group membership and their proximity to Whiteness. As such, Hair remains a salient part of Afro-Latina women’s lives and identities, with its influences seen in the personal, social, and mental realms. How an Afro-Latina wears her hair can have legal, social, and intrapersonal consequences. The subsequent treatment of Afro-Latinas because of their hairstyle can affect how they view themselves and even how they relate to others, especially …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite breakthroughs and improvement in cervical cancer (cercancer) management strategies over the years, racial and geographical disparities on 5-year relative survival rates (RSRs) persist. Studies showed black women have higher mortality rates than white women with the majority of deaths occurring among women above age 45. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the predicting abilities of race and residence on 5-year RSRs by stage at diagnosis and the potential effect on survival probability in the early stage of cercancer for women above 45 years living in Georgia. Anderson's behavioral model for inequalities in healthcare was the theoretical …

A Time For Every Purpose: Race, Medical Professionalism, And The Physicians’ Dilemma, Reuben Mindlin Schafir Jan 2022

A Time For Every Purpose: Race, Medical Professionalism, And The Physicians’ Dilemma, Reuben Mindlin Schafir

Honors Projects

This thesis examines the intersection of race and professionalism in healthcare as they relate specifically to the debate over universal healthcare. It begins with the National Medical Association (NMA), a professional organization for Black physicians founded in 1895. The first two chapters follow the NMA as they attempt to navigate the two allegiances they have: one to be "race men," and work for racial equity in healthcare, and one to be professionals, and work towards affirming their professional sovereignty. The narrative begins in 1945, when President Harry Truman backed the first substantial proposal for a system of nationalized healthcare. Chapter …

Pets And Problems: Exploring Community Patterns In Calls For Animal Services, Paige Dejarnett Dec 2021

Pets And Problems: Exploring Community Patterns In Calls For Animal Services, Paige Dejarnett

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pets have historically been viewed as family members, children, property, or economic resources. However, research surrounding animal maltreatment has expressed this issue as an individually-based problem, rather than a community-based phenomenon. Correlations have been found between animal cruelty, antisocial behaviors, and future interpersonal violence, whether this correlation be a predictive relationship, or a resultant relationship. Past research has also found correlations between animal treatment practices and the rural/urban differences of this behavior. However, there are many community-based indicators that have not been explored to understand the distribution of animal maltreatment. This study aims to explore these ideas by analyzing the …

Passing As White: The Experiences Of Bipoc Supervisees, Bridget Anton Sep 2021

Passing As White: The Experiences Of Bipoc Supervisees, Bridget Anton

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Cross-racial supervisory dyads are becoming more prevalent due to the increased diversity of graduate students in psychology. However, research has not adequately examined the narratives of BIPOC supervisees who pass as White. People who pass as White might not be seen as a person of color and their identities might be ignored because it is considered invisible. Due to the lack of research on BIPOC supervisees with a passing identity experience within the context of the supervisory dyad, this study explored the subjective experiences of BIPOC supervisees who pass as White in cross-racial supervisor dyads. Furthermore, an exploration into conversations …

Racial And Socioeconomic Disparities Influencing Obesity Amongst Middle-Aged Women, Morgan Woods Aug 2021

Racial And Socioeconomic Disparities Influencing Obesity Amongst Middle-Aged Women, Morgan Woods

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Many studies have examined the effects of racial and socioeconomic differences on health-related disparities involving obesity but, few have examined the mental and physical well-being intersection. Obesity is a disease that affects many Americans and has become an epidemic affecting the American population. Obesity, especially morbid obesity, is a risk factor for many other obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and more. Using the 2018 Healthcare Avoidance Study, differences were found between two racial groups, Caucasian and African-American women. Race was found as a significant factor for both level of physical activity and ideal body image perception

Stressors, Resources, And Psychological Well-Being Among Working Black And White Caregivers In The United States, Maureen E. Templeman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

By the year 2060 in the United States (U.S.), not only will the number of adults aged 65 and older double, non-Hispanic Whites (Whites), who currently constitute 77% of the older adult population, will constitute just slightly more than half of older adults. As the older adult population diversifies, so will their caregivers. Over 60% of informal caregivers of older adults (caregivers) are employed, and the majority of these are employed full time. Little is known about the unique experiences of working Black or African American (Black/AA) and White caregivers and non-caregivers in the U.S. This dissertation consists of three …

Positive Symptoms Of Schizophrenia And Suicide: A Systematic Review Of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, And Premorbid Iq Variables, Susan Diann Paschall Jun 2021

Positive Symptoms Of Schizophrenia And Suicide: A Systematic Review Of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, And Premorbid Iq Variables, Susan Diann Paschall

Dissertations

Schizophrenia is an exceptionally debilitating mental disorder. Its effects permeate all facets of psychosocial functioning and it is associated with premature mortality. As such, suicide is of clinical concern. Positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions may influence the risk of suicide among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, but additional research is necessary, as the limited literature on this topic is dated and includes heterogeneous results. Early recognition of and intervention for suicide risk factors, such as the presence of positive symptoms of psychosis, may reduce mortality rates for individuals with schizophrenia. The present literature review examined the role of gender, …

The Disparities Of The Marginalized: Focusing Race And Queerness In Science And Medicine, Kearby Stiles May 2021

The Disparities Of The Marginalized: Focusing Race And Queerness In Science And Medicine, Kearby Stiles

Honors College Theses

The United States is an immensely diverse country in which certain groups have been—and continue to be—marginalized in society because of their differences. Science and healthcare are areas in which marginalized peoples are negatively affected by a society that punishes difference and diversity. This is an immense problem because in biological and medical school education, in clinical research, and medical practices, little attention is given to marginalized populations. In this paper, I focus on the disadvantages faced by people of color, trans, and intersex people. I decided to focus on race because the history and current state of racism in …

Exploring The Mental Health Experiences Of African, Caribbean, And Black Youth In London, Ontario, Lily Yosieph

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This qualitative study explores the mental health experiences of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) youth in London, Ontario, investigating how the factors of race, gender, culture, and place have shaped their perceptions and experiences of mental health. The data collection and analysis were conducted using a phenomenological approach and a critical lens informed by feminist, intersectionality, and critical race theories. These data illuminate the ways in which these young people’s attitudes toward mental health and help-seeking strategies are impacted by broader social constructs and community expectations, which they navigate and often resist in their everyday lives. Their insights can provide …

The Effect Of Race, Provider-Location Type, And Region On Adolescent Hpv Vaccination, Erica Sade Hunter Jan 2021

The Effect Of Race, Provider-Location Type, And Region On Adolescent Hpv Vaccination, Erica Sade Hunter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Studies have been conducted on various factors and their effect on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake amongst adolescents. However, these studies typically point to communication factors and provider recommendations as having a significant effect on HPV vaccination uptake, ultimately leading to the need for more information on other factors that may increase HPV vaccination amongst adolescents. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to determine if race, provider-location type, and region of the United States have a statistically significant effect on HPV uptake amongst adolescents. The 2018 National Immunization Survey (NIS) was used, and 34,980 participants were included in …
