Clinical Practice Guideline On Suicide Prevention Among Adolescents, Beltta Gangwab Tachi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractIncreasing rates of suicide among adolescents in the United States is an unsettling problem whereby suicide is the second leading cause of mortality among adolescents. Although interventions exist to address this problem, there is a lack of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to assist healthcare providers to identify and prevent adolescent suicide. Guided by the zero-suicide model, the purpose of this project was to develop a CPG to address this gap in practice. A literature review on adolescent suicide prevention resulted in 24 peer-reviewed articles published in the past 5 years that were graded and arranged in a literature matrix. These …

Staff Education On Reducing Burnout In Mental Health Professionals Through Restorative Yoga Practice, Rina Buenaventura Vickery

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mental health professionals (MHPs) are at considerable risk for stress and burnout because of the nature of their work. Management and prevention of stress and burnout (e.g., through restorative yoga) may enable MHPs to avoid feelings of anxiety, depression, and apathy; lack of energy; and the development of unhealthy coping skills, such as substance and drug use. The purpose of this project was to create a staff education to assist MHPs in managing stress and burnout through yoga practice and mindfulness. The theoretical framework for the staff education was Kapp’s adult learning theory. An evidence-based PowerPoint presentation containing the staff …

Increasing Fall Awareness Through Nursing Staff Education, Evelyn Ahiante Dennis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patient falls are a significant healthcare concern, with the highest risk being among older adults aged 65 and older. A lack of nursing knowledge can contribute to patient falls. This DNP project was conducted in the medical-surgical trauma unit of a 137-bed local rehabilitation center in Northern Georgia. The intention of the project was to understand if a nursing staff education program would increase knowledge regarding falls prevention. Kurt Lewin’s change theory provided the framework for the project. The project participants were nine medical surgical nurses. Using the analysis, design, development, implementation (ADDIE) model, a falls prevention education program was …

Stroke Prevention Through Education, Laura Lee Ballance Jan 2020

Stroke Prevention Through Education, Laura Lee Ballance

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThis project focused on two concepts: a need for a stroke prevention program and what should be included. The problem with early identification of stroke is not formally addressed at the project site, physician’s office. A physician’s office can play a beginning key role in minimizing the risk of stroke. The purpose of this project was to explore the evidence to support the need for and to determine ideal content for a stroke prevention education program. This program focused on early detection and identification of risk factors to prevent stroke occurrence. The theoretical framework of Pender’s health promotion model aligns …

The purpose of this project was to develop an educational program for nurses at the site to use as preventive strategies in managing …

Reducing Child Maltreatment Through Prevention, Chantel Marie Eckert Jan 2019

Reducing Child Maltreatment Through Prevention, Chantel Marie Eckert

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child maltreatment is a public health problem directly linked to poor outcomes across the lifespan, including chronic health conditions and even death. The local population served by the agency in which the project took place experienced an increase in reports of child maltreatment. Agency leadership identified deficiencies in parental knowledge about positive parenting practices as a contributing factor to the problem. To address the problem, the agency implemented a quality improvement evidence-based home visiting pilot initiative. The evaluation of that initiative was the purpose of this project. Bandura's social cognitive learning theory provided the theoretical framework for the project, and …

Improving The Care Of Patients With Urinary Catheters Through A Quality Improvement, Ashley Nicole Holmstrom

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) significantly increases patient morbidity and mortality, length of stay, and organizational cost. In the 2 years prior to project implementation, the incidence of CAUTI increased by 15% in the local acute care, inpatient facility that served as the project site. Nursing leaders at the project site linked the increase in CAUTIs to a nursing knowledge deficit related to CAUTI prevention principles. The clinical question focused on the impact of CAUTI prevention staff training on the incidence of CAUTI, length of stay, and cost to the local acute care organization. After a review and critical appraisal …

Increasing The Value Of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits For Patients And Providers, Stephanie Hope Turner Jan 2018

Increasing The Value Of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits For Patients And Providers, Stephanie Hope Turner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) has been available to Medicare beneficiaries since 2005; however, most eligible individuals have not taken advantage of this benefit. The literature supports that patients are willing to schedule and complete an AWV if urged to do so by their primary care provider; however, providers are reluctant to advise patients to pursue the AWV due to the lack of perceived value and overall health benefit. The integrative theory of health behavior change was used as the theoretical framework for the project. By increasing patient self-management skills through education, engagement, and support, the project was designed …
