The Efficacy Of Tailored Text Messages To Improve Medication Adherence And Lifestyle Changes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Vanessa B. Silverio
The Efficacy Of Tailored Text Messages To Improve Medication Adherence And Lifestyle Changes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Vanessa B. Silverio
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease characterized by increased amounts of glucose in the blood, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (United Health Foundation [UHF]), 2021). T2DM can be effectively treated with medication and behavioral lifestyle modifications. Even small improvements in glycemic control can reduce the risk for debilitating complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, sepsis, and retinopathy (Wang et al., 2021, Haider et al., 2019). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to identify the most effective intervention for improving medication adherence, lifestyle changes, and hemoglobin …
Behavioral Intervention To Increase Condom Use Among Men Who Take Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis And Have Sex With Men, Marek J. Piszczatowski
Behavioral Intervention To Increase Condom Use Among Men Who Take Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis And Have Sex With Men, Marek J. Piszczatowski
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
In the absence of an effective vaccine, the introduction of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in 2012 offered a promising new approach to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention. However, the introduction of a single-pill regimen which helps to prevent HIV transmission created, in men who have sex with men (MSM) population, a phenomenon referred to as risk compensation resulting in PrEP replacing consistent condom use as a preventive measure (Freeborn & Portillo, 2018; Kumar et al., 2020; Montaño et al., 2018; Ramchandani & Golden, 2019; Traeger et al., 2018). The purpose of the evidence-based practice project was to implement a single, one-on-one …
A Multimodal Intervention For Weight Loss In Primary Care, Amber Smith
A Multimodal Intervention For Weight Loss In Primary Care, Amber Smith
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Obesity is a worsening pandemic that requires immediate action. It is recommended that primary care providers screen patients for obesity and provide multimodal behavioral interventions to their patients to treat and prevent obesity (USPSTF, 2018). The purpose of this evidenced-base practice (EBP) project is to implement a multimodal intervention for weight loss in adults within primary care. Five search engines were utilized, and 16 articles were ultimately selected as evidence. The evidence supported self-monitoring and close follow-up while in active weight loss. The Iowa Model for EBP to promote quality care was used as the framework to guide the project …
Behavioral Intervention Education For Pediatric Functional Constipation: A Feasibility Project, Meredith Brady, Jean Pelski Ph.D., Aprn, Nnp-Bc
Behavioral Intervention Education For Pediatric Functional Constipation: A Feasibility Project, Meredith Brady, Jean Pelski Ph.D., Aprn, Nnp-Bc
College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications
Background: Functional constipation (FC) is a common condition frequently seen in pediatric primary care, with an estimated median prevalence of 16% among pediatric patients (Mugie et al., 2011). Standard care for this condition is typically limited to laxative therapy, however evidence supports improved outcomes for patients who also receive behavioral intervention education. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement study was to assess the feasibility of implementing a standardized intervention strategy in a primary care setting for pediatric patients with FC to inform a future pilot study. Methods and interventions: This feasibility study was completed in three steps. 1) A …
Restless Legs Syndrome And Multiple Sclerosis: The Possible Role Of Physical Activity For Managing Symptoms, Katie Cederberg
Restless Legs Syndrome And Multiple Sclerosis: The Possible Role Of Physical Activity For Managing Symptoms, Katie Cederberg
All ETDs from UAB
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is an idiopathic neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs that affects 26% of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). The current pharmacological treatments for RLS are associated with a number of side effects, including the worsening of symptoms (i.e., augmentation). Physical activity represents a promising, behavioral approach for managing symptoms of RLS in MS. To date, physical activity has demonstrated tremendous benefits for managing many consequences of MS, but there is no evidence on its efficacy for managing RLS in MS. This dissertation described the current literature regarding physical activity and RLS in adults …
Primary Care Physician Delivered Brief Behavioral Intervention For Adult Obesity And Associated Health Conditions, Julia C. Huston
Primary Care Physician Delivered Brief Behavioral Intervention For Adult Obesity And Associated Health Conditions, Julia C. Huston
Dissertations
Obesity is a chronic health condition with prevalence rates that have continued to rise steadily over the past 30 years to the point that it has now been declared a global epidemic and a serious public health concern. Obesity is associated with significant physical and economic costs, primarily resulting from co-occurring health conditions that increase the risk of morbidity including type II diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, coronary heart disease, and respiratory problems. Despite the dissemination of several obesity treatments, including pharmacotherapy, lifestyle modification, and bariatric surgery, the prevalence and severity of obesity continues to rise. Federal guidelines recommend the use …
Bedtime Fading With Response Cost For Treatment Of Sleep Disturbances In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sela Ann Sanberg
Bedtime Fading With Response Cost For Treatment Of Sleep Disturbances In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sela Ann Sanberg
Theses & Dissertations
As many as 82% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) experience numerous chronic sleep-related problems and at a much higher frequency and severity than their typically developing peers. Behavioral treatments are considered best practice and first-line treatment to address sleep problems. These treatments tend to address one specific sleep-related behavior at a time. Bedtime Fading with Response Cost (BFRC) is a promising intervention that targets a multitude of sleep problems concurrently and has yet to be replicated by more than one investigative team in the home setting with children on the autism spectrum. This study evaluated the effectiveness of …
Increasing Access To Aba Intervention For Children With Developmental Disabilities In Taiwan, Noel Hsu
Increasing Access To Aba Intervention For Children With Developmental Disabilities In Taiwan, Noel Hsu
Master's Projects and Capstones
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses a behavioral approach to help clients and their behavioral challenges. This treatment has been proven to be a highly effective intervention for children with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders. It is widely practiced in the United States and many other developed countries; however, this intervention is not widely available in Taiwan. This phenomenon requires our investigation because it raises questions about the available supports and interventions for children with special needs in Taiwan. This project is to explore factors that influence the development of ABA intervention in Taiwan. The goal of this project …
Effect Of Dietary Self-Monitoring In Caucasian And African-American Women, Julianne Tondreau
Effect Of Dietary Self-Monitoring In Caucasian And African-American Women, Julianne Tondreau
DNP Scholarly Projects
Purpose: The purpose of the study is 1) to assess the effect of dietary self-monitoring on weight loss in a population of Caucasian and African-American women and men; and 2) to determine if there is a difference in African Americans’ and Caucasians’ use of self-monitoring in weight loss.
Review of the Literature: Previous studies demonstrated increased weight loss with dietary self-monitoring; however, these studies’ samples are 70-80% Caucasian women and cannot be generalized to African-Americans or men. Studies confirming the effectiveness of dietary intake self-monitoring in non-Caucasian women and men are needed.
Methodology: Using a cohort design with prospective and …
