This 17-week capstone project was completed at The Parker Place and virtually managed throughout the entirety of the experience. The Parker Place is a pediatric endocrinology and lifestyle management facility located in Annapolis, Maryland. Completing a virtual capstone project did not hinder the progress and outcomes of this experience. The Healthy Habits program was developed at this site to implement an occupational therapy role to supplement the served population’s health and wellness goals. Since 2004, countless guidelines have been developed to assist in the early identification and management of sepsis. The PICOT question that guided this project was: Does the implementation of a pediatric sepsis clinical pathway, compared with the standard protocol in emergency departments, decrease delays in treatment times of patients presenting with sepsis? Nasogastric tubes (NGTs) are commonly placed in children at risk for malnutrition in order to provide temporary nutrition support until the child achieves independent oral feedings or requires durable tube placement. Accurate securement of NGTs is necessary to safely provide nutrition, particularly in infants and toddlers who are at highest risk for dislodging their NGT. Dislodgement of an NGT has a cascade effect on the medical management, requiring increased exposure to the healthcare system with every replacement. Most research has been conducted in adults but there is a lack of recent research on the impact of ACEs in the pediatric population particularly in relation to mental health conditions. Traditional ventilation strategies have been shown to lead to the development of lung injury and postoperative pulmonary complications. Lung-protective ventilation (LPV) strategies for adults include low tidal volumes of 6-8 mL/kg based on ideal body weight, moderate levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), incremental recruitment maneuvers routinely and as needed, and low fraction of inspired oxygen. Recommendations for pediatrics are similar, with some suggesting a more liberal limit for tidal volumes of less than 10 mL/kg based on predicted body weight. Objective: This quality improvement project was conducted to determine the efficacy of an enteral feeding protocol to improve nutrition supplementation in pediatric burn patients.

Methods: Non-ICU patients with >10% total burn surface area requiring enteral nutrition supplementation were fed within 12 hours of admission or with the first sedated dressing change, whichever took place first. Pre (n = 3) and post (n = 5) implementation of the enteral feeding protocol data were obtained. Data were collected via chart audit and survey.

A parent satisfaction survey was created containing eleven likert and five open-ended questions, an adapted version of the VSQ-9 study. Pediatric and neonatal patients are especially vulnerable to suffering from distress. This literature review identifies research which applies passive music listening to distressed neonatal and pediatric acute care patients. Databases searched to find relevant studies include CINAHL plus with full text, MEDLINE, Alt HealthWatch, APA PsycArticles, and APA PsycInfo from EBSCOhost. Six studies were identified to meet search criteria. The studies that supported music listening with the neonatal and pediatric populations had a positive effect in reducing distress levels.
