Health Advocates: Mitigating Social Barriers To Health In A Medical Center, Brenda Ascencio

Master's Projects and Capstones

Santa Clara Valley Medical is one of the busiest emergency departments in California. Patients are coming into the Emergency Department (ED) with needs that could have been prevented if they would have had access or knowledge about preventative measures such as the importance of having health insurance or seeing a primary care physician. In order to decrease the use of ED services for non-medical needs the launching of the Health Advocates Program will help address social determinants of health to an underserved community, including access to safe and affordable housing, food, health services, job training, legal aid and more. The …

Using A Kindle To Improve Parental Perceptions Of Pain In Their Children: A Dnp Scholarly Project, Andrew Gearhart

DNP Scholarly Projects

Patient satisfaction is an important goal for health care providers, as it is associated with treatment success, and patients are more likely to adhere to medical treatments when they are satisfied. Emergency departments are among the lowest ranked healthcare settings nationwide in terms of patient satisfaction. Pediatric patients often experience pain and/or anxiety while in the hospital setting and are at an increased risk of having unpleasant experiences while receiving care. The purpose of this DNP scholarly project is to determine whether the introduction of a Kindle Fire tablet was effective in decreasing parental perceptions of pain while their child …

Early Fetal Loss In The Emergency Department And Nurses’ Perceptions Of Care: Implementation Of A Framework For Care, Sandy Langheld May 2018

Early Fetal Loss In The Emergency Department And Nurses’ Perceptions Of Care: Implementation Of A Framework For Care, Sandy Langheld

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Women and families widely report dissatisfaction with miscarriage care received in the emergency department (ED). Nurses in the ED are not formally trained in principles of perinatal bereavement, including meeting the complex psychological needs of clients experiencing the loss of an early pregnancy. Nurses may lack the confidence, preparedness, and knowledge needed to care for these clients holistically. This project hypothesized ED nurses’ perceptions (knowledge, confidence, and preparedness) would improve subsequent to education and implementation of an evidence-based framework for care. Emergency department nurses’ perceptions (knowledge, confidence, and preparedness) of care significantly increased after education and implementation of an evidence-based …

The Impact Of Machine Learning Algorithms On Benchmarking Process In Healthcare Service Delivery, Egbe-Etu Emmanuel Etu

Wayne State University Theses

Currently, organizations have adopted and implemented a variety of innovative quality management philosophies, approaches, and techniques to stay competitive in an ever-changing global economy. Benchmarking is one of such techniques deployed by organizations to stay competitive. The motivation for this research stems from a real-world problem being faced by hospitals in the healthcare industry who have amassed a ton of data and want to embark on benchmarking project to assess the performance of the emergency departments due to challenges faced with poor management of operations which has led to high patient boarding rates, high patient wait-times, poor quality service, low …

Implementation Of A Diabetic Resource Toolkit In A Veterans Administration Emergency Department, Caroline Hairston Jan 2018

Implementation Of A Diabetic Resource Toolkit In A Veterans Administration Emergency Department, Caroline Hairston

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Uncontrolled diabetes and lack of self-care knowledge leads to increased emergency department (ED) visits, utilizing limited health care resources. The practice-focused question asked whether a patient-focused diabetic self-care toolkit could decrease the number of diabetes-related ED visits. The purpose of this project was to reduce the number of diabetes-related ED visits and was supported by the social cognitive theory. The sources of evidence included the facility's ED Information System (EDIS) data and a patient survey developed by the project lead. There were 149 participants (135 males and 14 …

Evaluating The Need For A Family Nurse Practitioner Fast Track As An Alternative To The Emergency Department, Anna Czartorski

DNP Projects

PURPOSE: Emergency Departments (ED) are a vital part of healthcare and they provide lifesaving services to patients that are acutely ill. However, the latest data shows that 42% of ED visits are related to medical complaints that can be managed by a primary care provider (PCP). The purpose of this study was to assess the need for a fast track within a midwestern suburban Emergency Department (ED) that is based upon the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) fast track model.

METHODS: This study was a descriptive study examining the usage of the ED for non-urgent medical complaints from January 1 …

Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Room Nurses Regarding Palliative Care Patients, Pearl Alethea Harrison Jan 2018

Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Room Nurses Regarding Palliative Care Patients, Pearl Alethea Harrison

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Palliative care (PC) is the comprehensive management of patients diagnosed with terminal illness. Care for PC patients focuses on relieving symptoms. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference between pretest and posttest scores on the Frommelt Attitude towards the Care of the Dying (FATCOD) and the Palliative Care Quiz for Nurses (PCQN) after an educational intervention to emergency department (ED) nurses. The framework for this project was Bandura's social cognitive theory. The FATCOD was used to assess ED nurses' attitudes toward PC, and the PCQN was used to assess ED nurses' knowledge about PC prior to the …
