Background: Youth newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), and their families, require intensive education on the management of this chronic condition during this overwhelming period. Traditionally, our center conducts training in person during a hospital admission.

Methods: We studied family perceptions of our current patient education methods in an effort to elucidate strategies to augment education in the post-pandemic environment, where provider time in the room and visitation rules may limit face-to-face encounters.

Results: 25 families completed the survey (distributed to 156 in total, with approximately 21% response rate). The mean age at diagnosis was 9.52 ± 4.29 years …

This paper discusses the tension pediatricians felt between longstanding assumptions of parental virtue and the implications of the emerging conversation on child abuse started by Kempe. It also discusses the resistance shown by some pediatricians to accepting the reality of abuse and the slow process by which that resistance was overcome, aided by factors such as pediatricians’ involvement in adoption procedures. As pediatricians began confronting and understanding child abuse more deeply, their …

Telemedicine can be used to provide specialty care to critically ill patients in rural and community hospital settings. However, the effects of this technology on quality of care are unclear. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of a telepresent team leader on teamwork and communication, workload, and quality of care during a simulated pediatric resuscitation, and to explore provider perspectives on the use of telemedicine during resuscitations.

Twenty standardized teams (lead MD + bedside MD + two confederate clinical team members) were randomized to have a telepresent or an in-person leader. Telepresent leaders were connected via …

Pediatric Consultations To Child Protective Services: The Role Of Expert Opinions, Lindsay Kellogg Mcguire

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to provide a description of the types of child abuse consultations done by experts at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) to Child Protective Services (CPS) in Connecticut, and compare the opinions of the likelihood of child maltreatment of the initial treating physician, CPS, and the child abuse expert. Eligible cases were referred by CPS for expert child abuse consultations at YNHCH between March, 1998 and June, 2005. Abstracted information included demographics, information about the type of injury, and the assessments of the case by the initial treating physician, CPS, and the child abuse expert. …
