Mucin And Splice Variant Profiles Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Predict Patient Survival And Subtyping, Christopher M. Thompson
Mucin And Splice Variant Profiles Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Predict Patient Survival And Subtyping, Christopher M. Thompson
Theses & Dissertations
PDAC is a pancreatic epithelial malignancy and demonstrates aggressive progression and bleak patient prognosis. Despite decades of research, the evolution of novel diagnostics and intervention modalities for PDAC is stagnant. This dissertation explores the characteristic aberrant and elevated expression of mucins in PDAC. Beginning with the hypothesis that mucins are associated with disease aggressiveness, analysis of PDAC patient survival in TCGA revealed no associations between single mucin expression and patient survival. This led to the underlying issue of PDAC tumor cellularity since this disease demonstrates variability in the proportion of cancer cells within the tumor. Tumor purity assessed with the …
Impact Of Immunotherapy On The Survival Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Patients: An Analysis Of The National Cancer Database, Saber A. Amin
Impact Of Immunotherapy On The Survival Of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Patients: An Analysis Of The National Cancer Database, Saber A. Amin
Theses & Dissertations
Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents 7.2% of all cancer deaths, and by 2030, it will become the second leading cause of death due to cancer. The median overall survival (OS) is 17-23 months in resectable and 4-6 months in metastatic PC [8-9]. The 5-year survival of resectable PC is 22%, and unresectable PC is 8%. A majority of patients treated with standard treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy eventually succumb to the disease due to widespread micrometastases at the time of diagnosis. Due to the minimal effect of the current treatments, novel treatment strategies such as immunotherapeutics have been …
Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Regulate Mammary Tumor Growth And Metastasis By Modulating Tissue Microenvironments, Saraswoti Khadge
Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Regulate Mammary Tumor Growth And Metastasis By Modulating Tissue Microenvironments, Saraswoti Khadge
Theses & Dissertations
Omega (ω)-6 and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential fatty acids (FAs) and the precursors of pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators respectively. Epidemiological studies have shown a lower incidence of breast cancer (BC) in the countries where long-chain (LC)-ω-3FAs consumption is higher; however, the role of ω-3FAs in BC growth and metastasis is poorly understood. We used isocaloric, isolipidic ω-6 and ω-3 (contains LC-ω-3FAs) diets and a pair-fed model to evaluate the effects of dietary PUFAs in mammary tumor metastasis. Our studies have resulted in several novel observations including that dietary LC-ω-3FAs modulate mammary gland (MG) microenvironments in non-tumor bearing …
Long-Term Outcomes And Factors Associated With Mortality Among Patients With Moderate To Severe Pulmonary Hypertension In Kenya, Abdulaziz Mansur Abeid
Long-Term Outcomes And Factors Associated With Mortality Among Patients With Moderate To Severe Pulmonary Hypertension In Kenya, Abdulaziz Mansur Abeid
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a condition that carries significant morbidity and mortality. Studies done in sub-Saharan Africa have reported poor short-term outcomes. However, data on long-term outcomes and prognostic factors are lacking.
Objectives: This study sought to determine the one and two-year survival rates and prognostic factors associated with mortality in patients with moderate to severe PH.
Methods: A retrospective review of moderate to severe PH patients [pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), ≥45 mmHg] diagnosed at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi from 2014 to 2017 was carried out. Demographic, clinical and in hospital outcome data were extracted from medical …
The Effect Of Treatment Delay, Non-Adherence To Treatment Guidelines, And Never-Smoking Status On The Survival Of Lung Cancer Patients, Trisari Anggondowati
The Effect Of Treatment Delay, Non-Adherence To Treatment Guidelines, And Never-Smoking Status On The Survival Of Lung Cancer Patients, Trisari Anggondowati
Theses & Dissertations
Despite many significant medical advances, lung cancer continues to cause more deaths than any of the other cancers in the United States (US), and worldwide. Timeliness of care and evidence-based guidelines are among the components of quality of care that are expected to improve patient outcomes. However, evidence on the effect of timeliness of care and adoption of evidence-based guidelines on patient survival remains lacking. In addition, there has been increasing concern on the fact that smokers are not the only group that suffers from lung cancer. Never-smokers comprise at least 10% of lung cancer patients in the US, or …
The Survival And Treatment Refusal Of Lung Cancer Patients: Analyses Of National Cancer Registries, Poppy Deviany
The Survival And Treatment Refusal Of Lung Cancer Patients: Analyses Of National Cancer Registries, Poppy Deviany
Theses & Dissertations
Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer mortality of both genders in the United States. A recent report suggests that the relative five-year survival rate of lung cancer is only 18%. Studies indicate many factors are associated with the survival of lung cancer patients, including age at diagnosis. It is widely known as a disease of older people, but the literature shows a substantial number of young people have been diagnosed with lung cancer. The literature also indicates that the refusal of recommended treatment contributes to cancer-related death and poorer survival. The …
The Roles Of Ecdysoneless In Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Oncogenesis, Appolinaire A. Olou
The Roles Of Ecdysoneless In Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Oncogenesis, Appolinaire A. Olou
Theses & Dissertations
Tumor cells are well known to exhibit ER stress as a result of their altered environment characterized by redox and calcium imbalance, deregulation of protein synthesis to meet their oncogenic demands, and decreased vascularization associated with nutrient limitation and hypoxia, all of which are conducive of ER stress. Accordingly, markers of ER stress signaling response are up-regulated in various cancers. The outcome of ER stress signaling response varies from survival and adaption to apoptosis. Although pro-apoptotic ER stress signaling molecules are up-regulated in cancer, the mechanisms by which cancer cells seem refractory to, or evade, their apoptotic signaling are not …
