Use Of Telehealth In Home-Based End-Of-Life Care For Children In Rural Regions, Meaghann S. Weaver
Use Of Telehealth In Home-Based End-Of-Life Care For Children In Rural Regions, Meaghann S. Weaver
Theses & Dissertations
A national shortage in pediatric-trained providers results in certain geographies, primarily rural, where children with special needs are not able to access home-based care at their end-of-life. Advances in technology have made the use of telemedicine a potential modality for palliative care subspecialty clinicians to provide clinical care and support for adult-trained hospice teams. This dissertation utilizes four approaches to consider telehealth as an unexplored opportunity in care delivery: (1) a systematic review of telehealth measures and instruments to select the Technology Acceptance Model as a validated metric of telehealth acceptance uniquely now applied to pediatric care; (b) a pilot …
Evaluating Self-Management Of Adults With Multiple Chronic Conditions Residing In Rural Communities: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Jessica J. Miller
Evaluating Self-Management Of Adults With Multiple Chronic Conditions Residing In Rural Communities: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Jessica J. Miller
Theses & Dissertations
Background
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States and are on the rise. Multiple chronic conditions are increasing in frequency with 1 in 4 adults affected. Behaviors of adults from rural communities are at an increased risk of developing MCC because of limited access to health care resources and behaviors. Supporting the development of self-management skills can help adults be more active in their own health and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors. The Individual and Family Self-management was the guiding framework for this cross-sectional study.
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine …
Identifying, Adapting, And Implementing A Weight Management Program In Rural Primary Care, Gwenndolyn Porter
Identifying, Adapting, And Implementing A Weight Management Program In Rural Primary Care, Gwenndolyn Porter
Theses & Dissertations
Rural adults are at heightened risk for obesity, yet evidence‐based interventions lack consistent translation into clinical practice. This multi-phase study addresses this gap. First, a systematic review and meta-analysis of rural adult weight loss interventions were conducted to assess overall impact. Though few studies reported participant representativeness, meta‐analyses revealed a significant weight reduction among interventions. Second, 10 focus groups were conducted with primary care (PC) staff to determine the feasibility of implementing a weight-management program through PC. Differences in responses among rural, micropolitan, and metropolitan was also assessed. Thematic analyses revealed rural PC currently lacks the capacity to manage patient …
Increasing Physical Activity To Improve Health Through Primary Care Clinics In Rural Nebraska, Jill Reed
Increasing Physical Activity To Improve Health Through Primary Care Clinics In Rural Nebraska, Jill Reed
Theses & Dissertations
Addressing the lack of physical activity (PA) in rural adults is vital because of the role it plays in the risk for many chronic diseases. The purpose of the study was to explore the feasibility of conducting a 12-week intervention to increase PA behavior in inactive rural adults recruited from a primary care clinic. Subjects were randomized to the intervention (n=30) or control (n=29) group and wore a Fitbit to track PA. The intervention group completed action plans and received weekly motivational text messages to improve PA behaviors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with study participants (n=10) and a focus group …
Factors And Outcomes Associated With Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use In Rural Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Marcia Y. Shade
Factors And Outcomes Associated With Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use In Rural Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Marcia Y. Shade
Theses & Dissertations
Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) use in older adults is a significant public health concern. The use of PIMs to avoid may lead to negative outcomes such as adverse drug events. Prior conceptual analysis of PIMs use and observation of health-related factors in rural adults led to the design of this dissertation study. A sample was recruited from a population of rural community-dwelling older adults to examine the following specific aims: 1) Describe the use of PIMs to avoid, 2) Explore individual demographic characteristics (age, gender, income, education, and rural home location), health experience (comorbidity, number of medications and health providers), …
Rural Nebraska Women's Explanatory Models Of Postpartum Depressive Symptomatology, Elizabeth Mollard
Rural Nebraska Women's Explanatory Models Of Postpartum Depressive Symptomatology, Elizabeth Mollard
Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to construct the explanatory models of postpartum depressive symptomatology (PPDS) from the perspective of rural Nebraska women and to compare these models with the medical model of PPDS. A sample of 20 rural Nebraska women were interviewed in a one-on-one qualitative descriptive telephone interview using questions based on Kleinman’s (1980) explanatory model of illness. This study used feminist pragmatism as a guiding philosophical paradigm. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, and results were compared and contrasted with the medical model of PPDS, which included the onset, symptoms, and duration listed in the DSM-5 …
Using Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program To Execute A Mass Prophylaxis Exercise In A Rural Community., Brian K. Smith
Using Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program To Execute A Mass Prophylaxis Exercise In A Rural Community., Brian K. Smith
Theses & Dissertations
This project explores the execution of point of distribution exercises in a rural community. Harrison County Iowa is a rural county with a population over 15,000 located approximately 45 minutes north of the Omaha metro area. The project explored the existing point of distribution plans and inventory for the Harrison County Home and Public Health Department. Prior to this project, many staff at Harrison County Home and Public Health Department had no experience with table top or full scale exercises. The mass prophylaxis point of distribution plan had not been updated, and staff had not received training on the point …
