Central Activation Of Orl-1 Receptors In Heart Failure Models, Jeffrey Angell
Central Activation Of Orl-1 Receptors In Heart Failure Models, Jeffrey Angell
Theses & Dissertations
Heart failure is a prevalent and debilitating disease associated with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide and is the leading cause of death in the United States. While various therapeutic strategies have been developed and approved to manage heart failure, exploration of novel targets and mechanisms are essential for improving patient outcomes. This thesis investigates the therapeutic potential of the central activation of opioid receptor-like 1 (ORL-1) by nociceptin in a rodent heart failure model.
Furthermore, this study aims to elucidate the central mechanisms underlying nociceptin induced cardiovascular and renal effects in heart failure. This involves investigating neuronal pathways and …
Concept Of Health-Related Quality Of Life Among People With Heart Failure In Karachi, Pakistan, Anny Ashiq Ali
Concept Of Health-Related Quality Of Life Among People With Heart Failure In Karachi, Pakistan, Anny Ashiq Ali
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, are a leading cause of global mortality. The mortality rate for cardiovascular diseases is on the rise, with 80 % to 86 % of fatalities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Pakistan. Among NCDs, heart failure (HF) is a condition for which there is no cure, and patients rely on supportive treatments to maintain their quality of life. HF not only affects physical well-being but also has far-reaching consequences on the emotional, social, and cognitive aspects of life. In the context of Pakistan, where unique healthcare, sociocultural, and economic factors prevail, the …
Exploring The Influence Of Contextual Factors And The Caregiving Process On Burden, Quality Of Life, And Outcomes Of Heart Failure (Hf) Dyads After A Hospital Discharge Guided By The Individual And Family Self-Management Theory (Ifsmt): A Mixed Method Study, Tamara Bernard
Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of contextual factors and caregiving process characteristics on proximal outcomes of the patient and caregiver after discharge from the hospital. The long-term goal of this research is to reduce caregiver burden and improve patient outcomes. Heart failure (HF) is an increasingly common chronic illness with unique caregiving needs and a high rate of hospital readmissions. Caregiver burden has been researched extensively in other areas of medicine such as oncology and dementia and has been reported for stable chronic HF patients in an outpatient setting. However, there is little research …
Cardioprotective Roles Of Hydrogen Sulfide Donor Treatment In Diabetic Cardiomyopathy, Sumit Kar
Cardioprotective Roles Of Hydrogen Sulfide Donor Treatment In Diabetic Cardiomyopathy, Sumit Kar
Theses & Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of heart failure 2-4-fold. Intensive glycemic control does not abate this risk in DM patients, suggesting that DM-induced heart failure is beyond hyperglycemia. DM silently induces cardiac muscle disorder termed diabetic cardiomyopathy (DMCM), which progresses to heart failure. The objective of this dissertation is to understand the mechanistic underpinnings of DMCM to develop new solutions to diagnose and treat heart failure in DM.
The heart pumps blood due to the contraction and relaxation of terminally differentiated cardiomyocytes with limited regenerative capacity. The DM environment of hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and inflammation causes cardiomyocyte death and leads …
Changes To Echocardiography-Derived Left Ventricular Filling Pressures And Cardiac Output In Response To Fluid Boluses In Elderly Patients With Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction Undergoing Vascular Surgery, Sasha K. Shillcutt
Theses & Dissertations
Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) of the heart is a condition where the heart does not relax properly. This condition is important during times of stress, as LVDD is associated with significant morbidity of elderly surgical patients. LVDD is often asymptomatic and unrecognized as many of these patients have normal ejection fractions. However, LVDD may lead to heart failure in patients with preserved systolic function, with the incidence being as high as 50% in hospitalized elderly patients. The diagnosis of LVDD is an independent risk factor for postoperative major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and negatively impacts post-surgery readmission rates. Anesthesiologists …
Proportion Of Heart Failure Patients Who Meet Criteria For Malnutrition Upon Hospital Admission Based On Aspen Guidelines, Sarah L. Johnson
Proportion Of Heart Failure Patients Who Meet Criteria For Malnutrition Upon Hospital Admission Based On Aspen Guidelines, Sarah L. Johnson
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Current research estimates that approximately 50 percent of heart failure patients are categorized as malnourished. Heart failure patients are at increased risk of malnourishment due to increased catabolic processes that increase resting energy expenditure, decrease appetite, impair nutrient absorption, and lead to unintentional weight loss. The goal of standardized diagnostic criteria is to identify malnutrition early for more effective treatment. Current studies suggest the association of early diagnosis and nutrition intervention with increased positive patient outcomes and improved quality of life for heart failure (HF) patients. However, the proportion of patients with HF who meet criteria for malnutrition at …
