Background: Conventionally, the strength of dental materials used for fixed restorations is measured using specimens of simplified geometry (i.e bars or discs). Objective: To measure and compare the retention of zirconia crowns cemented with Ceramir (Calcium phosphate-based Bioactive Cement), RelyX Luting Plus (RMGI Cement) and RelyX Unicem (Self-adhesive resin cement) to extracted teeth following thermocycling. Methods: 30 sound extracted non-carious human molars were collected following IRB approval. Screw-retained zirconia implant crowns with an internal titanium base have favorable mechanical properties compared to single piece zirconia implant crowns; however, they require adequate bonding between the zirconia crown and the titanium base. This study measures the retention between a titanium base and a full contour zirconia implant crown following different surface treatments of their bonded surfaces. Purpose: To determine the best method of cleaning saliva-contaminated zirconia in order to regain its bond strength. Methods: Flat blocks of zirconia were particle-abraded with aluminum oxide and divided into eight groups (n=10). Groups 1-5 were first treated with 1 coat of an MDP-primer (Z-Prime Plus, Bisco) and groups 5-8 were left untreated. Monolithic zirconia restorations are popular but removing these crowns is difficult. The purpose of the study is to measure and compare the cutting effectiveness of 10 types of diamond burs through monolithic sintered zirconia. Ten types of diamond burs (n=8) were compared for the cutting effectiveness in Zirconia (CERCON; DeguDent) using a high speed computer controlled cutting device with water spray (5.45L/min).
