Symptom Experience Of Patients With Advanced Melanoma Undergoing Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy, Natalie Jackson-Carroll Aug 2023

Symptom Experience Of Patients With Advanced Melanoma Undergoing Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy, Natalie Jackson-Carroll

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are novel therapeutic agents utilized in the management of advanced melanoma. Though generally well-tolerated, patients receiving ICIs experience treatment-related toxicities at varying onset and intensity. Assessment and evaluation of these toxicities and their impact on a quality of life is essential to comprehensive cancer care. Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) contribute vital data to a clinical assessment, supporting clinicians in their ability to improve outcomes. To date, there is no melanoma-specific or ICI-specific PRO measure of symptom burden available.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the symptom experience from the patient's perspective and how …

Metabolic Control, Quality Of Life, And Body Image In Patients With Glycogen Storage Disease Type Ia, Alexa Bream May 2019

Metabolic Control, Quality Of Life, And Body Image In Patients With Glycogen Storage Disease Type Ia, Alexa Bream

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Glycogen storage disease is a group of inborn errors of metabolism, with type Ia being the most common form of the disorder. Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSDIa) is a multisystemic condition in which individuals have various complications secondary to an inability to properly break down glycogen and to perform gluconeogenesis. Complex management is then necessary for patients and includes dietary modification, frequent cornstarch usage, and evaluation for additional complications such as hepatic adenomas, hypertriglyceridemia, and kidney disease. Previous studies have found lower scores in quality of life and body image in GSDIa patients; however, the specific factors influencing this …

Psychometric Performance Of The Arabic Versions Of The Cancer Behavior Inventory‐Brief And The Functional Assessment Of Cancer Therapy‐Breast In Saudi Arabia, Maaidah M. Algamdi Msn May 2016

Psychometric Performance Of The Arabic Versions Of The Cancer Behavior Inventory‐Brief And The Functional Assessment Of Cancer Therapy‐Breast In Saudi Arabia, Maaidah M. Algamdi Msn

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Background: Arabic is the mother tongue of 26 countries, including Saudi Arabia where cancer is the fourth leading cause of death. Cancer is a sensitive issue in the Arabic population and a clear understanding of patients’ perceptions of self-efficacy for coping with cancer and quality of life helps assess interventions designed to facilitate optimal patient outcomes. In preliminary studies, the Cancer Behavior Inventory-Brief (CBI-B) was translated and back translated between English and Arabic, and reviewed for translational validity by an expert panel. The Arabic version of the CBI-B (CBI-BA) had acceptable evidence of translational validity with an overall translational validity …

Information Processing Speed Impairment After Stroke, A Descriptive Study, Susan Alderman May 2016

Information Processing Speed Impairment After Stroke, A Descriptive Study, Susan Alderman

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Background Information processing speed (IPS) is an elemental cognitive function impacting multiple other functions including memory, attention, and executive function, and academic skills like arithmetic, reading and writing. However, little research has been done on IPS impairment in acute stroke. This article compares the frequency and severity of IPS impairment in mild and moderate stroke and its impact on quality of life.

Methods The longitudinal study of patients with mild stroke (NIHSS

Results Using linear mixed model regression, similar frequency and severity of IPS and memory impairments were noted, regardless of stroke severity, in the sample of 30 patients (60% …

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi May 2016

Effect Of Photographs Of Visible Genetic Conditions On Quality Of Life Perceptions, Christina Falugi

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Historically, medical photographs are used to demonstrate dysmorphic features and characteristic presentations of genetic conditions. Traditional, pictorial depictions of genetic conditions typically involve nude subjects against walls to emphasize their features. These stark, black and white photographs may negatively influence students’ perceptions of the depicted individual. Natural photographs which include individuals in non-clinical environments may impact perceptions. To assess the influence of photographs on a viewer’s perception, 649 students from medical, nursing, genetic counseling and dental programs were surveyed in a cross-over study. Students were randomized to view a traditional or a natural photograph of three distinct genetic conditions followed …

Long Term Follow-Up Of Morbidity And Quality Of Life Associated With Isolated Gastroschisis, Roya M. Mostafavi May 2012

Long Term Follow-Up Of Morbidity And Quality Of Life Associated With Isolated Gastroschisis, Roya M. Mostafavi

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Gastroschisis is a birth defect in which an opening in the abdominal wall allows herniation of the viscera. Prenatal counseling regarding gastroschisis typically discusses that, although these infants often endure a difficult neonatal course, they experience few long-term complications. However, information regarding long-term outcomes is based on limited studies that lack specificity. Therefore, we aimed to study the long-term morbidity and quality of life in children born with gastroschisis in a large and diverse population drawn from the Texas Birth Defects Registry (TBDR). Study packets with informed consent, a questionnaire, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Generic Core Scale …
