Asthma Care By Unlicensed Personnel In The Elementary School Setting: A Training Program, Teresa Eligio May 2022

Asthma Care By Unlicensed Personnel In The Elementary School Setting: A Training Program, Teresa Eligio

Doctoral Projects

This Quality Improvement project (QI) aims to improve the competence and confidence of unlicensed school health staff in identifying asthma symptoms, reading an asthma action plan, asthma care, emergency response, medication delivery tools, and trigger reduction in the school setting. The QI project transpired in an Elementary School District in Los Angeles County, CA. The Project Manager, an asthma instructor trained by the American Lung Association, provided evidence-based Asthma-Basics training for health clerks (HCs), substitute health clerks (SHCs), licensed vocational nurse health clerks (LVN HCs), school office coordinators (SOCs), school office attendance clerks (SOAs), and substitute school office staff (SDO). …

Is There A Relationship Between Limited English Proficiency (Lep), Medication Adherence Behaviors, And Adverse Asthma Outcomes In Hispanic Adults With Moderate To Severe Persistent Asthma?, Archana Kartik Chandra Apr 2019

Is There A Relationship Between Limited English Proficiency (Lep), Medication Adherence Behaviors, And Adverse Asthma Outcomes In Hispanic Adults With Moderate To Severe Persistent Asthma?, Archana Kartik Chandra

Doctoral Projects

The effects of LEP are well documented in the literature. LEP decreases medication adherence, causes ineffective communication between patients and providers, and reduces health outcomes. Asthma is known to be misdiagnosed and under-treated in Hispanic adults. There are discrepancies in the literature about the effects of LEP in Hispanic adults with persistent asthma.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the presence of LEP is associated with medication adherence behaviors and adverse asthma outcomes in Hispanic adults with moderate to severe persistent asthma. Hispanic adults with LEP were assessed for asthma outcomes and medication adherence behaviors.

The results …

Improving Communication Of Asthma Related Care Between Pediatric Primary Care Providers And Schools, Jessica N. Heichel

Doctoral Projects

Introduction: Asthma is a life-altering chronic disease that affects many children throughout the state of Michigan. Evidence-based guidelines recommend a written asthma action plan (AAP) be given to all caregivers of children with asthma. This would include schools, but the plans are not making it there. This project focused on collecting school asthma data and designing a process change at a local clinic to send the plans directly to the schools.

Objectives: The goal of this project was to improve communication between healthcare providers and schools for children with asthma. The objectives were to increase the percentage of children with …

Implementing Spirometry-Driven Evidence-Based Asthma Care In A Primary Care Practice, Douglas C. Rau Aug 2016

Implementing Spirometry-Driven Evidence-Based Asthma Care In A Primary Care Practice, Douglas C. Rau

Doctoral Projects

This project was a quality improvement initiative employing an educational intervention to increase the awareness and stress the importance of utilizing spirometry in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of asthma. Clinical support staff received training on how to perform spirometry and providers received education on the interpretation and utility of spirometry results to drive care to improve outcomes for clients with asthma. Project outcomes examined the self-rated confidence to perform and interpret spirometry before and after the intervention and the subsequent utilization pattern of office-based spirometry at the primary care clinic. For clinical support staff, the self-comfort level at performing …

Evaluating The Use Of The Asthma Action Plan And The Asthma Control Test By Providers In A Primary Care Office After Implementation Into The Electronic Health Record, Claudia N. Turkson-Ocran

Doctoral Projects

Asthma is a life-long chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows a person’s airway. Asthma results in recurring periods of chest tightness, wheezing with inspiration and/or expiration, shortness of breath, nighttime or early morning coughing, and trouble sleeping as a result of coughing and wheezing. An asthma exacerbation occurs when asthma symptoms worsen enough to require medical intervention or self-administration of oral corticosteroids. Exacerbations can be graded in severity as mild, moderate, severe, and life threatening. An asthma action plan (AAP) is a written treatment plan developed collaboratively between the health care professional and the patient for self-management and maintenance …
