Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill Dec 1971

Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This model of placental CO2 and O2 exchange calculates the time course of changes in PCO2, [HCO3-], and [H+] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO2 (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO2 and O2 diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions. The equations …

Effect Of Lateral Positioning On Central Venous Pressure, Romelda C. Jereos Aug 1971

Effect Of Lateral Positioning On Central Venous Pressure, Romelda C. Jereos

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of lateral positioning on central venous pressure. It was hypothesized that lateral positioning would not significantly change the central venous pressure so long as the subjects were placed on the same horizontal plane for both supine and lateral measurements. It was also hypothesized that the length of time spent in the lateral position would not alter the pressure.

It is recognized that several factors do indeed play important roles in the maintenance of central venous pressure. The effect of one particular influencing factor, gravity, was central to this study. The difference …

The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser Jul 1971

The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser

A Technique For The Experimental Production Of Dry Socket In The Cat And An Evaluation Of Numerous Potential Etiologic Factors, Thomas F. Scott May 1971

A Technique For The Experimental Production Of Dry Socket In The Cat And An Evaluation Of Numerous Potential Etiologic Factors, Thomas F. Scott

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dental dry socket has been attributed to a variety of etiologic factors without basic science research. Before a systematic attempt could be undertaken to determine the initiator/s of dry socket, if such exists, an experimental technique had to be developed which could consistently produce dry socket. A dental extraction socket infusion technique was developed with the cat that enabled the investigator to study some of the initiating factors which have been previously suggested as possible etiologic causes for the production of dry socket.

From the present study such factors as trauma, age, sex, site and number of extractions, lack of …

The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss May 1971

The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.

Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. Clinical applications of this technique include the determination of root angulations, location of impactions, and the fabrication of individualized preformed arch …

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young May 1971

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. Before euthanizing the animals at one, three, five, and seven weeks, a clinical evaluation of …

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson May 1971

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …

The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann May 1971

The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and clinical changes that occurred when a continuous supply of exogenous acid or base, at varying pH, was delivered adjacent to the gingival crest of the monkey. A related goal was to develop a monkey model system which would deliver test solutions continuously and atraumatically, to the experimental gingival sites.

Two young adult female monkeys had a perfusion apparatus attached to certain maxillary teeth so that test solutions were deposited atraumatically to the marginal gingival tissues. During the experimental periods the animals were kept in primate restraining chairs and fed …

Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll May 1971

Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.

It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.

Forty-five catheters were examined after their removal from patients. Flow rates were determined on 33 …

Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut May 1971

Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The periapical dental granuloma and cyst is the most frequent sequela of pulpitis. These lesions are always intraosseous and often become quiescent after the acute phases are over, forming a space which primarily consists of chronic inflammatory tissue. This chronic inflammatory tissue usually appears as a one-centimeter area of punched out bone on the x-ray film and is referred to as a dental granuloma. Should epithelium choose to proliferate in this inflammatory area, it may undergo subsequent cystic degeneration forming the typical periapical cyst. While much has been written with regard to the etiology and treatment of the apical cyst …

Change In The Number Of Fibers And Nuclei In The Rat Soleus Muscle During Normal Development And Increased Work Load Exercise, John K. Pearson May 1971

Change In The Number Of Fibers And Nuclei In The Rat Soleus Muscle During Normal Development And Increased Work Load Exercise, John K. Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many orthodontists have desired to produce a permanent lengthening of a short upper lip. To produce a permanent increase in skeletal muscle mass, changes associated with hyperplasia would probably have to occur. If it would be possible to demonstrate in animals that skeletal muscle cells and corresponding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) increased with exercise, clinical studies on the upper lip would be in order.

Male Sprague Dawley albino rats were used to study the effects of exercise and normal development. Increased work load exercise of the soleus muscle was induced by cutting the tendon of the synergestic gastrocnemius. Histological sections of …
