Nurse-Led Education On Oral Chemotherapy Medications, Carmen Lucia Glick Alonso

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women in the United States. Annually, around 264,000 breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women and 2,400 in men (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). According to the American Cancer Society, the risk of a woman in the United States being diagnosed with breast cancer in their life is around 13% (2022).

Context: Along with a cancer diagnosis comes the need to introduce patient education about new oral chemotherapy treatments. As a treatment team member, the oncology nurse plays a vital role in this …

Assessing The Impact Of Prescription Opioid Use Versus No Use On Adherence To Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd) Maintenance Medications, Copd Exacerbations And Total Healthcare Costs, Akshay Kharat

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

OBJECTIVES:COPD contributes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide and is currently the third leading cause of mortality in the United States. Chronic pain prevalence is high among COPD patients leading to a high rate of prescription opioid use. The potential impact of concurrent prescription opioid use on COPD maintenance medication adherence, COPD exacerbations, and total healthcare costs is not well understood. The study objectives were i) to assess the impact of prescription opioid use compared to no prescription opioid use on COPD maintenance medication adherence in 90, 180, 270, and 365-day follow-up periods, and ii) to assess the impact of …

Objectives: The aims of the study were to (1) identify personal, social, and clinical history for patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and mental illness, (2) measure agreeance between patient self-report versus facility record history for mental illness, substance abuse, and psychotropic medication, (3) investigate the specific role of medication adherence and barriers to use for psychotropic medications upon SUD relapse, and (4) assess follow-up changes in mental illness severity and medication adherence in dual diagnosis patients enrolled in a substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Methods: The pilot study utilized a mixed methodology. Inclusion criteria included male patients at least 18 …

Association Between Dispensing Channel And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder Exacerbations Among Medicare Beneficiaries, April S. Prather Jan 2018

Association Between Dispensing Channel And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder Exacerbations Among Medicare Beneficiaries, April S. Prather

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may be at increased risk of exacerbation due to physical and cognitive deficits that make proper inhaled medication adherence more difficult despite consistent medication access. This retrospective study utilized administrative medical and pharmacy claims data to examine the likelihood of having a COPD exacerbation requiring acute medical care by means of an emergency room visit or hospitalization in elderly patients receiving maintenance COPD medications from mail order and retail pharmacies. It was hypothesized that mail order patients would be more likely to experience exacerbations despite differences in medication access when compared to retail …

The Effect Of Depression And Antidepressants On Cost, Survival And Adherence To Hormone Therapy In Breast Cancer, Virginia Noxon Jun 2016

The Effect Of Depression And Antidepressants On Cost, Survival And Adherence To Hormone Therapy In Breast Cancer, Virginia Noxon

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Breast cancer patients with a depression diagnosis before or after cancer diagnosis have increased cost, shorter survival time and reduced adherence to hormone therapy. Treating depression in these patients should improve these outcomes; however, there is scarce literature on this topic. Currently, no study has determined the association of concurrent depression while adjusting for a history of depression or treating depression with antidepressants with cost, survival and adherence to hormone therapy. This study has two objectives: 1) to determine the association of concurrent depression with cost, survival and adherence to hormone therapy adjusting for a history of depression 2) …

Analysis Of Kentucky Medicaid Managed Care Versus Fee-For-Service Systems: Medication Adherence In Patients With Prevalent Chronic Diseases, Catherine K. Herren Jan 2016

Analysis Of Kentucky Medicaid Managed Care Versus Fee-For-Service Systems: Medication Adherence In Patients With Prevalent Chronic Diseases, Catherine K. Herren

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Objectives: Managed care organizations reduce healthcare costs and may improve patient health outcomes by encouraging better control of prevalent chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing from a fee-for-service program to a capitated managed care program improved medication adherence for Medicaid patients in Kentucky with hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study of patients enrolled in Kentucky Medicaid to evaluate the impact of transitioning to capitated managed care in November 2011. Medication adherence was measured using the proportion of days covered (PDC) method. Multivariable analyses measured the adjusted …

Reimportation Of Prescription Drugs As Contributing Component To Patient Drug Adherence: A Qualitative-Grounded Theory Study, Jeffrey Tubbs Jan 2015

Reimportation Of Prescription Drugs As Contributing Component To Patient Drug Adherence: A Qualitative-Grounded Theory Study, Jeffrey Tubbs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Pharmaceutical drugs are one of the most socially important heath care products. They are part of many individuals' everyday lives, from the eradicating of diseases at birth to treating patients at the end of life. However, for many patients access is prevented due to expensive cost. This study explored cost-related non-adherence (CRN) and researched if reimportation of pharmaceutical drugs from other countries could increase patient drug adherence. The perceptions of 10 patients and 10 providers in Maine were assessed. Maine is the only state that allowed its citizens to purchase prescription drugs from abroad. The research questions addressed (a) how …

Development And Evaluation Of The Assessment Of Opioid Taking Behaviors And Adherence Scale (Aotba) In Patients With Sickle Cell Disease, Abdulkhaliq Jassem Alsalman May 2013

Development And Evaluation Of The Assessment Of Opioid Taking Behaviors And Adherence Scale (Aotba) In Patients With Sickle Cell Disease, Abdulkhaliq Jassem Alsalman

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid growth in opioid therapy for non-cancer pain has occurred without an adequate appreciation of the consequences of this growth. Few studies provide patient-centered evidence that can be used to inform the current proposed standards for efficacious (safe and effective) opioid prescribing in non-cancer pain. Furthermore, different terms may be used interchangeably in the literature to refer to opioid-taking behaviors, resulting in imprecise or vague interpretation of existing evidence. We therefore sought to explore patterns of opioid-taking behavior and their biopsychosocial-spiritual determinants in African-American adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). Many questions surround opioid use for non-cancer pain, but …

Costs And Use Of Oral Anti-Cancer Medications Among Senior Medicare Part D Beneficiaries, Nantana Kaisaeng Nov 2012

Costs And Use Of Oral Anti-Cancer Medications Among Senior Medicare Part D Beneficiaries, Nantana Kaisaeng

Theses and Dissertations

Oral cancer drugs are branded and expensive medications that generally do not have generics available. The restrictions of the Medicare Part D program, including the coverage gap and high cost-sharing, and the high cost of oral chemotherapy may lead to patients’ non-adherence to medication. Few studies have examined the cost and utilization of oral anti-cancer medications. This study will be the first to examine the costs associated with the use of oral anti-cancer medications and the impact of cost-sharing and type of prescription drug subsidy on medication discontinuation in the Medicare Part D elderly population. Objectives: To determine the usage …

Impact Of Medicare Part D Coverage Gap On Beneficiaries' Adherence To Prescription Medications, Urvi Desai May 2011

Impact Of Medicare Part D Coverage Gap On Beneficiaries' Adherence To Prescription Medications, Urvi Desai

Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage to seniors through a benefit plan with a major deductible inserted in the middle. It is important to study the extent to which this structure affects seniors’ adherence to prescription medications. Therefore, this study had the following objectives: (1) To identify characteristics of beneficiaries reaching and not reaching the coverage gap, (2) To study the entry and exit times from the coverage gap, (3) To study the impact of a complete gap in coverage on beneficiaries’ adherence to prescription medications, (4) To study the impact of a partial gap in coverage on …
