Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic disorder involving repetitive interruptions in breathing during sleep. Sufferers of OSA are exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), characterized by cyclical reductions in oxygen availability. A number of studies have established a link between OSA and various cardiovascular and metabolic comorbidities in adulthood, including hypertension, obesity, and type II diabetes. This dissertation explores the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on human colorectal cancer (CRC) cell proteins related to cellular structure and adhesion. NSAIDs are extensively used not only to treat inflammatory diseases but also to prevent cancer among high-risk groups. Their mechanisms are not fully understood, but both cyclooxygenase (COX) dependent and independent pathways play a role in NSAID-induced anti-tumorigenesis. Our lab previously reported that NSAIDs induce other anti-tumorigenic genes in a COX-independent manner (Chapter 1). Arthritis is one of the main complications of late-stage Lyme borreliosis. Cytokines play an important role in the persistent inflammation that is elicited by the causative agent of disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is induced by B. burgdorferi and that has been implicated in development of arthritis. However, in a mouse model of Lyme arthritis, treatment with anti-TNF-alpha; antibodies increased the severity of disease. Lymphocytes require antigenic encounter to activate and proliferate, eventually clearing the source of antigenic challenge. The peripheral lymph nodes (PLN) are the primary sites of antigenic encounter and thus the ability of lymphocytes to migrate to this tissue is a requirement for mounting effective immune responses. The process of lymphocyte migration to the PLN is known as the "adhesion cascade". Specifically, lymphocytes are captured from the blood through the adhesion molecule, L-selectin, followed by CC chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7)-mediated integrin activation, which ultimately results in cell transmigration into the PLN. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fluid loss following hemodialysis (HD) on tibialis anterior (TA) strength in participants with end-stage renal disease. Issues concerning measures of skeletal muscle hydration and efficacy of exercise as an anabolic intervention were also addressed.

METHODS: Data from published literature were combined in a meta-analysis to establish efficacy of exercise in participants on HD. This thesis conducts an in vitro investigation of these injuries, examining the role of static muscle loading on fracture threshold measures (i.e., force, impulse, energy). Initially, an impact apparatus and custom LabVIEW colour-thresholding program were designed and assessed for repeatability and accuracy in quantifying fracture measures and impact kinematics. These tools were then used to test six pairs of cadaveric forearms, with static muscle loads simulated in one specimen from each pair. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is an effective treatment option for patients with inoperable early-stage lung cancer. SBRT uses online image-guidance technology [e.g. cone-beam CT (CBCT)] to focus small-fields of high energy x-rays onto a tumour to deliver ablative levels of radiation dose (e.g. 54 Gy) in a few treatment fractions (e.g. 3).
