Problem

This project aims to improve patient satisfaction for vulnerable population patients while in hospital, namely transgender and gender non-conforming people. A major roadblock for this population in seeking medical care is their fear of discrimination when accessing healthcare, resulting in a delay, or avoidance of medical care. Multiple studies agree there is a need for nursing education on cultural competence to improve care and satisfaction for vulnerable populations.

Poverty is an ongoing issue in the United States, with major implications for the health of U.S. citizens. In order to provide compassionate care, nurses must understand their own attitudes towards those living in poverty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for possible changes in attitudes towards poverty in junior level BSN students after a poverty simulation intervention. Participants were surveyed using the Yun and Weaver’s Short Form Attitudes towards Poverty (SFATP) tool, which looks three factors of poverty attitudes: personal deficiency, stigma, and structural perspective.

Epidural analgesia is a widely used method to provide excellent postoperative pain relief and enhance postoperative recovery (Sawhney, 2012). Epidural analgesia is associated with fewer side effects than alternative pain management techniques; however, when epidural catheters are managed improperly, or pain is inadequately assessed, epidural analgesia fails to provide adequate pain relief (Deni et al., 2016). Transitions in medical education have been shown to increase unprofessional behaviours in learners but little is known about the experiences of first year Canadian Family Medicine residents or their preceptors. This qualitative descriptive study explored the experiences and feelings of Family Medicine preceptors and first year Family Medicine residents (FMRs) surrounding the transition to residency. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 preceptors and 9 FMRs. The findings highlighted the complex but predominantly positive experiences during this transition in addition to competing and often evolving feelings experienced by both groups. The use of simulation-based activities is a growing trend in nursing pedagogy and requires evaluation to assess and improve outcomes. This project completed a review of multiple research studies and reviews to evaluate the effects of simulation and simulation methods on students’ sense of self-efficacy and confidence. The findings support the use of simulation and found that simulation does increase students’ perception of confidence and self-efficacy.
