Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the United States, occuring in over 5.1 million Americans. Of those with acne, 53.8% are adults between the ages of 18 and 44 years old (American Academy of Dermatology [AAD], 2017). Acne can lead to multiple issues such as scarring, poor self-esteem, anxiety, and depression (Zaenglein et al., 2016). Acne can also negatively impact quality of life (Cengiz & Gurel, 2020). Immunizations play a fundamental role in reducing the occurrence of preventable diseases in the population. Injections related to immunization are the most frequent pain-producing medical procedure implemented worldwide and account for nearly 12 billion injections annually (CDC, 2019; Taddio et al., 2015). These procedures are often perceived as simple but can have a variety of complications including pain. The standard of care in the treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer includes identification and biopsy of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) of the breast (Chaterjee et al., 2017; Kneece, 2017). The process of identifying the SLNs involves radioisotope injections into or near the areola. Because this area is highly sensitive, women report this procedure to be considerably painful. In 2016 the United States black population stood at over 43 million with a projected increase of 41% by 2060, and the “two or more races” category will increase by 197.8% (Vespa et al., 2020), thus intensifying the need for diagnostic accuracy of skin diseases for these demographics. Vaccinations are the most common painful needle procedure, with an estimated 12 billion injections given per year (CDC, 2019). The concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines (BZDs poses a formidable challenge for clinicians who manage chronic pain. While the escalating use of opioid analgesics for the treatment of chronic pain and the concomitant rise in opioid-related abuse and misuse are widely recognized trends, the contribution of combination use of BZDs, alcohol, and/or other sedative agents to opioid-related morbidity and mortality is underappreciated, even when these agents are used appropriately. Patients with chronic pain who use opioid analgesics along with BZDs have a defined increase in rates of adverse events, overdose, and death, warranting close monitoring. Intrauterine device (IUD) insertions and endometrial biopsies (EMB) can be painful in office gynecological procedures. In the clinical setting used for this evidence-based project (EBP) it was noted there was no consistent pain management being used for these procedures. For this EBP project a protocol for pain management during IUD insertions and EMBs was developed and implemented into this clinical setting. The protocol was created from an exhaustive literature search, which yielded six pieces of high-level evidence of good quality. The evidence supported the use of a 1% lidocaine paracervical block prior to IUD insertion and a 2% lidocaine intrauterine …
