The literature review found suspension of disbelief (SOD) in clinical simulation heavily weighted on educators alone within high-fidelity environments. The project examined a co-created narrative background story applied to a simulated patient’s clinical profile to determine achieving an improved connectedness toward the simulated patient leading to enhanced SOD and enhanced levels of learning and reaction. The studied population was third-semester associate degree nursing students over 18 years of age with prior clinical simulation experience who were not repeating the semester. GlideScope Video laryngoscopy carries a higher risk of injury to the pharyngeal cavity than direct laryngoscopy. Verathon is aware of this risk and has developed a proprietary “Four-step method” to mitigate it. This project aimed to reduce injuries related to GlideScope video laryngoscopy by providing first-year nurse anesthesiologists at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with didactic and simulation education related to GlideScope video laryngoscopy and injury prevention. Didactic education was provided via a pre-recorded PowerPoint presentation. Simulation education was provided with the GlideScope and airway trainer manikins. The use of standardized patient (SP) encounters in athletic training education programs have become more common; however, due to time and space constraints, it is possible that not all athletic training students will be able to directly participate in engaging with the SPs and instead some must be observers. The objective of this study was to determine if student participants who observe a simulation encounter, experience similar improvements in student learning outcomes as students who directly interact with SPs during the simulation encounter.

This dissertation investigates how prelicensure nursing students are prepared to address healthcare disparities with transgender patients, specifically through simulation scenarios at the University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions Simulation Center.

A critical review of current literature reveals how microaggressions against transgender communities create and sustain barriers to equitable healthcare. The qualitative study was designed to explore the lived experience of prelicensure nursing students who are actively seeking to understand the healthcare needs of transgender patients in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Background: Developmental differences between pediatrics and adults requires intervention adjustments for airway management. Segregated intraprofessional training and limited provider exposure could result in poor collaboration and low-quality management. Patient outcomes depend on the proficient collaborative application of skill and knowledge. The use of simulation-based activities is a growing trend in nursing pedagogy and requires evaluation to assess and improve outcomes. This project completed a review of multiple research studies and reviews to evaluate the effects of simulation and simulation methods on students’ sense of self-efficacy and confidence. The findings support the use of simulation and found that simulation does increase students’ perception of confidence and self-efficacy. The data collected included both qualitative and quantitative data. A few studies lacked generalizability due to small sample size and scenario selection. The purpose of this quasi-experimental capstone project was to evaluate the impact of high fidelity, student-directed, obstetrical simulation upon chain-of-command self-efficacy of baccalaureate nursing students. The convenience sample, composed of 48 junior nursing students, was randomly divided into four simulation groups, and then further randomly divided into active or observational status. Active participants planned interventions and participated in high fidelity obstetrical simulations related to patient safety and chain-of-command initiation. Active and observational students participated in a combined debriefing session. This capstone project assessed whether a curriculum change for senior nursing students could have an impact on improving attitudes toward physician-nurse collaboration. A convenience sample of 60 senior level nursing students and eight residents were enrolled in the study. The nursing students and residents participated in a high-fidelity simulation scenario, and were given a pretest and posttest using the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician-Nurse Collaboration. There was strong evidence (t= -1.971, p=.05) that the attitudes of physician-nurse collaboration improved for nursing students through a simulation based scenario with residents. The confidence interval for the difference was (-0.22, 0.002). Although …

The aim is to determine if participation in a high-fidelity simulation increases student levels of self-confidence. Thirty-eight first year associate degree nursing students enrolled in a medical-surgical course in a southeastern community college participated in a diabetes simulation as part of their course. Students then voluntarily completed a survey indicating self-confidence following the simulation. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the overall mean of student responses to each question on the National League for Nursing (NLN) Student Satisfaction and Self Confidence in Learning Tool. Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy was the theoretical framework for the study.
