Background: Over 35% of all deaths in the United States occur in the acute care hospital setting, and 75% of end-of-life (EOL) patients require palliative care. Registered nurses (RNs) with strong palliative care self-efficacy (PCSE) promote positive death experiences for patients and families by minimizing patient suffering and maintaining clinical and ethical standards. Employers can enhance RNs’ PCSE through educational interventions and resources.

Problem: Inpatient acute care hospital RNs lack PCSE because acute care is traditionally curative, and RNs receive limited EOL care education.

Problem: One of the most important steps in infection prevention is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect patients and staff from infectious agents; yet, research indicates that PPE compliance remains suboptimal in many healthcare institutions.

The vaccines for HPV are safe and effective, but previous research demonstrated that nursing students have low knowledge levels and vaccine uptake. Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a process that captures a patient’s wishes in the case of future circumstances in which they are unable to express them. Studies show that less than one third of the general population has completed some type of formal Advance Directive (AD). There are barriers to completing ADs, and these barriers operate on multiple levels, including, patient, provider and institutional. The present study examined three dimensions of physician characteristics and behaviors (knowledge, communication, and compassion) to better understand how patients perceive physicians and overall quality of care. This mixed-methods approach utilized both close- and open-ended survey questions to assess participants’ relationship with their physicians. In addition, participants wrote stories to describe best and worst experiences with physicians. Giving participants the opportunity to write stories in their own words allowed for a more nuanced understanding of the complexity of patients’ experiences, physician characteristics, and perceptions of overall quality of care.
